This study aimed to evaluate quantitative and morphometric analyses of preantral follicles and the ultrastructural characteristics of antral follicles in different oestrous cycle stages in Anatolian water buffaloes. Twenty-four ovaries collected from twelve slaughtered Anatolian water buffaloes were classified macroscopically as luteal or follicular stages. The ovaries were prepared for histological examination (Hematoxylin-eosin staining), and primordial, primary, and secondary follicle numbers were calculated, and the diameters of oocytes, follicles, and nuclei were measured under a light microscope with a micrometre. Being multipotent progenitor cells, mesenchymal stem cells continue to attract attention as a promising tool for cell-based therapy and tissue engineering. However, research on the ultrastructure of these cells is rather scarce. This study was aimed at the investigation of the transmission electron microscopic ultrastructure and morphology of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from the stroma of rat umbilical cord using the explant culture method. The Javanese medaka (Oryzias javanicus) has the potential to be developed as a test organism. It also exhibited many characteristics that are similar to those of well-known laboratory fishes. This study determined the effects of water pH on the survival, reproductive performances, and ultrastructure of the gonads, gills, and skins of the Javanese medaka. This study confirmed that Javanese medakas treated with pH 6-7 displayed the lowest mortality, but increased in egg production and hatchability. The Malpighian system consists of tubules that are closed at the distal end and extend from the point of junction of the midgut and hindgut. In this experiment, the ultrastructural effects of orally administered lead acetate on rat (Rattus rattus) spleen were studied. Rats weighing approximately 200-250 g were used in this experiment. They were divided into five groups, each one including five rats. Group I served as the normal control group while the others served as the experimental groups. The morphology, histochemistry, and ultrastructure of foliar mucilage-producing trichomes of Harpagophytum procumbens are investigated using a combination of light and electron microscopy. The leaves of H. procumbens bear short and long glandular trichomes comprising 1 or 2 basal epidermal cells, a stalk of 1-3 cells, a short neck cell, and a head of 2-5 cells. These trichomes are distributed on both leaf sides with a greater abundance on the abaxial side. Little is known about the merogony of coccidians from fishes in Africa. To our knowledge, including both freshwater and marine fishes, developmental stages have been recorded for only Goussia cichlidarum, Cryptosporidium sp. parasitizing the stomachs of juvenile cichlid fish, and Eimeria (s. l.) vanasi. A survey of coccidians parasitizing marine fishes from the coast of Senegal (West Africa) was done between 1988 and 1992 and samples of infected organs were collected for further transmission electron microscopy observations. The mature seed coat structure in hard-seeded and soft-seeded varieties of Vicia sativa L. was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy to investigate differentiation in cytological and morphological features between these varieties. The outer layer of the seed coats was composed of macrosclereid (Malpighian) cells in the hard-seeded and soft-seeded varieties of Vicia sativa. The walls of the macrosclereid cells were thickened, and the cell vacuoles were filled with tannin. The cytoplasm of the macrosclereids contained small- and large-sized vacuoles and ribosomes, mitochondria, and endoplasmic reticulum. In this study 6 healthy 8-week-old ostrich chicks were processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. Hematoxylin and eosin as well as improved Weigert staining were used for light microscopy. The small thymus, which clustered caudally along both sides of the neck, contained Hassall's corpuscles in the medulla. The ultrastructural pathological changes in the renal haemopoietic tissue of Channa punctatus (Bloch) experimentally infected with 2 species of aeromonads, Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas salmonicida, were reported. Haemopoietic tissues of the head kidney of Clarias batrachus were studied for morphometric analysis and ultrastructural descriptions of the erythropoietic and leucopoietic cell populations. Eight successive steps of developing erythrocytes from small lymphoid haemoblasts (SLHs) to mature erythrocytes (MEs) were distinguished. Progressive loss of RNA and synthesis of haemoglobin during haemopoiesis were coupled with denser nucleus and changes in cellular shapes. Transmission electron microscopy aided in clear distinction between cell lineages in the development of erythrocytes, granulocytes, and lymphocytes. Cellular and subcellular mechanisms involved in tissue responses to larval and adult lungworms (Protostrongylidae) were respectively explored through experimental and natural infections in molluscan intermediate (Xeropicta candacharica) and ruminant definitive hosts (Ovis aries). Reaction to developing larval stages in the gastropod is manifested as cellular infiltration involving lymphocytes and macrophages into the infected tissue, which restricts damage and may result in destruction and elimination of parasites from the intermediate host. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects on the structure and ultrastructure of pepper plants (Capsicum longum A.DC.) exposed to UV radiation under greenhouse conditions. The plants were grown in a growth chamber under uniform environmental conditions and after 35 days were exposed to UV-A and UV-C radiation for 15 and 8 days, respectively. Changes in root growth were not significant, but shoot growth decreased in UV-R-exposed plants and decreased significantly in UV-C-exposed plants. The present study investigated the effect of methyleugenol, a food flavoring and fragrance agent, on the livers of laboratory rats. Doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg/day of methyleugenol (in 0.5% methylcellulose) were administered intragastrically (IG) to 2 dose groups for 10 days alongside a control group (n = 10 for each group). Gains in body weight were not statistically significant for either dose. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities decreased (P < 0.05) for both dose groups, but AST (aspartate aminotransferase) activity decreased significantly (P < 0.05) only in the 30 mg/kg/day methyleugenol dose group. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity did not change significantly in either group. The total amount of glucose remained unchanged, but glycogen in the liver decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in the 30 mg/kg/day methyleugenol dose group. There was also an increase of swelling in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum sacs (sER), electron dense accumulations in the sER, cytoplasmic vacuolization, a slight increase of mitochondria and lysosomes, and invaginations in the nucleus membranes of hepatocytes. Extensions in bile canaliculi and increasing microvilli of bile canaliculi in the liver were also observed. These findings indicate the ultrastructural toxic effect of methyleugenol on rat livers in 10 and 30 mg/kg/day doses. Therefore, we may speculate that the toxic effect of methyleugenol needs to be examined in detail.

The histochemical and ultrastructural effects of cadmium (Cd) on the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles of male mice were investigated. Two doses of Cd (0.1 and 1.0 x 10^{-4} M) were injected into the mice. The animals were killed at the end of 48 h and their EDL muscles excised. Three types of fibers (I, IIA and IIB) were described by the succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) method in the control groups. The mitochondrial and sarcotubular contents of the fibers were different. The histochemical and ultrastructural effects of water Cu on the anterior latissimus dorsi (ALD) muscle of 120 newly hatched broilers were investigated in a 45-day experiment. Two doses of water Cu (250 mg Cu/kg water and 500 mg Cu/kg water) were given to the poults. Two distinct categories (IIIA and IIIB) of slow tonic fibers in the control groups were detected by enzyme reactions. The ultrastructure of the ovarian follicle and the levels of the ovarian 11-dehydrocorticosterone (11-DHC), estradiol-17\beta (E_{2}), 17\alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17\alpha-OHP), and progesterone (P) were studied during cortical alveoli, vitellogenesis and oocyte maturation in Chalcalburnus tarichi. The microvilli began to form on the oocyte surface during cortical alveoli phase and during vitellogenesis, came into contact in the pore canals of the zona radiata with microvilli formed from granulosa cells. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has a thermogenic function in animals. Mitochondrial uncoupling protein (UCP) is responsible for the thermogenic function in BAT cells. Vitamin A affects proliferation and differentiation in cells. Retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A, stimulates the expression of the UCP gene, which is found in BAT cells. The histology of the esophagus of Oncorhynchus mykiss was studied. The structure of the esophagus exhibited differences as well as similarities when compared with previous studies. In this study, the histochemical and ultrastructural structure of the tunica muscularis externa in the esophagus of this fish is investigated. The muscle fibers are described as red and intermediate fibers according to the pH stability of their mATPase activities. The red fibers showed intense staining, while intermediate fibers showed moderate staining with succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and toluidine blue. In addition, small diameter fibres were seen. Male Wistar albino rats, bred and fed under standard laboratory conditions, were administered for 20 days two dosages [Group I: 750 mg/kg body weight (n = 15) and Group II: 1500 mg/kg body weight (n = 15)] of oral hexachlorobenzene resolved in corn oil. Control group animals (n = 15) received only corn oil for 20 days. Twenty-four hours after the administration of the last dose, renal tissue samples, obtained by laparotomy, were fixed in 3% glutaraldehyde in phosphate buffer and 1% aqueous osmium tetroxide. Synactinomyxon type 1, aurantiactinomyxon type 3, echinactinomyxon type 5 and raabeia type 4 were studied at the TEM level in order to determine the developmental stages within their oligochaete hosts. All the actinosporean types studied had uninucleate cells as the earliest stage of development. The formation of a subsequent binucleate cell stage was either due to the division of the nucleus in a uninucleate cell or the plasmogamy of two uninucleate cells. The Effects Of Precocene Ii On The Fine Structure Of Corpus Allatum In Adult Female Anacridium Aegyptium L. (Orthoptera, Acrididae), Gürsel Ergen

In this study, the effects of the antijuvenile hormone Precocene II on the corpus allatum of adult females of Anacridium aegyptium L. (Orthoptera) were investigated with electron microscopy. In the insects, topically treated with 500 µg precocene II, the corpora allata did not show marked atrophy or destruction. After 10 or 20 days of precocene II treatment, the ultrastructural changes of especially the nuclei, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum membranes, Golgi complexes and some other intracellular organelles in the gland cells, probably reflect a moderate sensitivity to this compound.

The effects of free radicals in the liver tissue of 20 mice were studied. The mice, separated into acute and chronic groups, were injected with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) to trigger the release of free radicals. For evaluation of the effects of free radicals, malandialdehyde (MDA) measurement and electron microscopic examination were performed. The ultrastructure of the cortex of Ophryoscolex purkynjei,an entodiniomorphid ciliate obtained from domesticated cattle rumens, was studied and found to have five layers. A particulate and/or filamentous glycocalyx layer, triple membrane layer, homogeneous epiplasmic layer with very fine grains, microtubular layer characterized with a double row of microtubule bundles each containing at most 6 units, and a compact microfilamentous layer were identified. In addition, scarce and disorganized kinetosomes and related microtubules were found to lie underneath all of these. These observations are discussed with reference to the findings of previous studies of other entodiniomorphid ciliates.

In this study ultrastructures of Balantidium elongatum and B.duodeni obtained from the digestive system of Rana ridibunda have been examined. In addition to the kinetodesmal fibril and microtubular fibrils orijinating from each kinetosome, a vacuolar zone, microtubular bundles and other cytoplasmic structures have been described by electron microscopy.

The ultrastructure of endogenous stages of Cryptosporidium muris in the stomach of laboratory mice was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Electron microscopy showed the various developmental stages as free in the gastric gland lumina and attached to the mucus cells. The changes in organelle composition and structure of various stages from the sporozoite to young trophozoites and matured oocysts were demonstrated in detail. Two types of the meront were discriminated. The finding of a microgamete on the parasitophorous vacuolar membrane surrounded a macrogamont was interesting for the stage of fertilization in C. muris.
