Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars (cvs) (Göynük 98, Karacaşehir 90, Şehirali 90, ES 855, and Yunus 90) were subjected to drought stress in order to assess the levels of drought tolerance through the analysis of growth parameters, leaf water potential (\psi_{leaf}), stomatal conductance (g_s), chlorophyll (chl) content, and lipid peroxidation. Significant differences were recorded among cultivars in most traits. Yunus 90 was identified as the most tolerant, and Karacaşehir 90 was the most sensitive. High Frequency Plant Production Via Shoot Organogenesis And Somatic Embryogenesis From Callus In Tylophora Indica, An Endangered Plant Species, Aastha Sahai, Anwar Shahzad, Mohammad Anis

An efficient and reproducible protocol has been developed for the in vitro production of an endangered medicinal climber Tylophora indica (Burm.f.) Merr. via leaf explants. Different types of calli produced on benzyladenine (BA) and thidiazuron (TDZ) supplemented Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium were selected for shoot induction and somatic embryogenesis studies. Calli when transferred from BA (5 µM) and TDZ (2.5 µM) to MS medium containing BA (5 µM) resulted in high frequency shoot induction (26.8 ± 0.97 shoots/culture) along with somatic embryogenesis (10.20 ± 0.37 embryoids/culture) up to 3 subculture passages. The effect of diethyl sulphate (DES) and sodium azide (SA) was studied on the meiotic behaviour of Vicia faba L. var. major in the M1 generation. Five concentrations of SA (0.01%, 0.02%, 0.03%, 0.04%, and 0.05%) were combined with DES (0.02%) to study the synergistic and antagonistic effects of these 2 mutagens. A dose-dependent increase in chromosomal aberrations was recorded in populations treated with both the mutagens individually and their combination doses. The main chromosomal aberrations were stickiness, precocious separations, univalents, multivalents, laggards, unequal separations of chromosomes, micronuclei, disturbed polarity, multinucleate condition, and cytomixis. Silene bayburtensis Hamzaoğlu & Aksoy sp. nov. is described as a new species from Bayburt province (Turkey). The specimen was collected on a calcareous steppe, in 2 localities, at an altitude between 1700 and 1750 m. The new species is similar to Silene pharnaceifolia Fenzl. The differences between the species are discussed.

Scorzonera ketzkhovelii Grossh. (Asteraceae) was recently collected from Yusufeli, Artvin (north-east Anatolia) and it has been reported as a new species record for the flora of Turkey. It is described and illustrated. In addition, its karyological features and pollen morphology are given.

Juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) is an allelochemical responsible for walnut allelopathy. The effects of gibberellic acid (GA_{3}) and kinetin (KIN) on overcoming the effects of juglone stress on seed germination and seedling growth were investigated in barley, wheat, cucumber, alfalfa, and tomato. Seeds pre-treated with plant growth regulators were used to test their effects on the alleviation of juglone stress. It was observed that seed germination in tomato and wheat was inhibited by juglone and that the plant growth regulators alleviated it significantly. Sideritis L. (Lamiaceae) includes approximately 150 species of annual and perennial plants distributed mainly in the Mediterranean region. In Turkey, 44 species (55 taxa) are native. Three of these species (5 taxa) are annual and these taxa are included in Burgsdorfia and Hesiodia sections. This study was undertaken to investigate the morphological and anatomical properties of 5 annual taxa of Sideritis. Full descriptions and illustrations of these taxa are given, along with some additional information regarding their ecology and phytogeography. The anatomy of the leaf blade, midrib, and stem of the taxa are described and illustrated.

Elymus sosnowskyi, a rare endemic species known from East Anatolia, Turkey, was first collected by D. Sosnowsky in 1912. After that it has been collected only one other time, by F. Sorger in 1981. During the "Taxonomic revision of tribe Triticeae in Turkey" project, which was supported by TÜBİTAK, E. sosnowskyi was recollected from 3 populations in Oltu and Narman (A8 Erzurum, Turkey) in 2007 and 2008. Trichome shapes were investigated on the outer and inner surfaces of fruit valves of 43 species of Erysimum L., 20 of which are endemic to Turkey, by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Five species, Erysimum sorgerae Polatschek., E. huber-morathii Polatschek, E. cheiri (L.) The genus Lophanthus Adans. is recorded for the first time from Turkey. Specimens collected from Van province, east Anatolia, are described here as the new species Lophanthus turcicus Dirmenci, Yıldız & Hedge. Diagnostic characteristics that distinguish it from allied species are presented; a description, distribution map, and taxonomic comments are given.

A New Subspecies Of Stachys Cretica (Section Eriostomum, Lamiaceae) From Turkey, Ekrem Akçi̇çek

Stachys cretica L. subsp. kutahyensis Akçiçek subsp. nova is described as a new subspecies from West Anatolia, Turkey. It is related to Stachys cretica L. subsp. vacillans Rech. f. and Stachys cretica L. subsp. anatolica Rech. f., from which it differs in stem, leaf, and flower characters. Diagnostic characters, description, detailed illustrations, and taxonomic comments of the new subspecies are given. The geographical distribution of the subspecies is mapped. IUCN threat category and observations on the population are noted.

Anomodon longifolius (Schleich. ex Brid.) Hartm. is reported for the first time from Turkey, bringing the total number of Anomodon species known from Turkey to 6. This record extends its distribution range to the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. The nearest localities to Turkey for this species are in Bulgaria, Greece, the Caucasus, and Iran. This submeridional species was collected from 3 different localities (in Bolu and Bartın provinces) in Turkey. A site description, illustrations, and diagnostic characters of the Turkish specimens are given, together with notes on its distribution and ecology.

Twenty-three populations belonging to 10 wild Primula L. (Primulaceae) taxa of Turkey, some of which are morphologically quite similar, were investigated based on nrDNA ITS regions. The plant materials were collected from different geographical areas of Anatolia in vegetation periods of 2005 and 2006. Total genomic DNAs were isolated from the healthy leaves of each population. The entire ITS regions of the populations were amplified by universal primers with the aid of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and then the PCR products were sequenced. The genus Cyclotrichium, a member of the tribe Mentheae subtribe Menthinae (Lamiaceae, Nepetoideae), was analysed with respect to morphological revision, phylogenetic analysis, and cytogenetic properties. All species of the genus were investigated for morphological characters and ITS (internal transcribed spacers) of nrDNA sequence comparison (except C. hausknechtii for ITS). Six members of the genus were also analysed for chromosome numbers. The combined results strongly suggested that Cyclotrichium is a separate genus in Nepetoideae with distinct morphological, phylogenetic, and cytogenetic characteristics. In this study, relationships among the 15 taxa of the genus Crocus L. distributed in Turkey were analysed using 29 morphological and 4 anatomical characters. Analysis of the data set utilising maximum parsimony criterion with Branch-and-Bound search algorithm yielded 32 most parsimonious trees. Bootstrap analysis with the majority rule consensus algorithm generated a consensus tree supporting some branches. Our data mostly did not agree with the previous sectional and serial treatments. In this study, pollen and seed morphology of Velezia L. (Caryophyllaceae) species in Turkey were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. The genus is represented by 5 species in Turkey: V. tunicoides P.H.Davis, V. hispida Boiss., V. quadridentata Sibth. & Sm., V. pseudorigida Hub.-Mor. and V. rigida L. Endemism ratio of the genus is 60%, which shows that Turkey is the gene center for this genus. The pollen grains of Velezia species are radially symmetrical and isopolar, oblate-spheroidal, operculate, and polypantoporate, pores with conical spinules on operculum. Furthermore, morphological, anatomical leaf surface, and palynological features of these 2 species were examined in detail. The precise evaluation of the conservation status of endemic and rare species is necessary in order to prevent their extinction. According to our current taxonomic revision of Turkish Salvia L., the Mediterranean and Aegean geographic regions of Turkey have 60 taxa, 32 of which are endemic (mainly local endemics), 5 of which are non-endemic rare, and the remaining 23 taxa are widely distributed. The rate of endemism is 53% in the area. We investigated the germination requirements of a rare endemic plant species, Pedicularis olympica Boiss. (Scrophulariaceae), which grows in wet habitats on Uludağ Mountain, Turkey. We studied the effects of scarification, moist chilling (+4 °C) for 15 days, different doses of gibberellic acid (GA_{3}; 100, 150, and 250 ppm) and combined hormone and moist chilling treatments under dark (20 °C) and photoperiod (20/10 °C; 12/12 h, respectively) conditions. A protocol for the in vitro seed germination, seedling development, and axillary shoot propagation of Dorystoechas hastata Boiss. & Heldr. ex Bentham is described. By employing sterilised seeds that were transferred onto in vitro media, the effects of various in vitro media, photoperiods, and temperatures on germination were investigated. At the end of these experiments, a final protocol was determined for the in vitro germination of D. hastata seeds. Ovule Ontogenesis And Megagametophyte Development In Onobrychis Schahuensis Bornm. (Fabaceae), Abdolkarim Chehregani, Nayereh Tanomi

The ovule ontogenesis and the megasporogenesis events in Onobrychis schahuensis Bornm. were studied with light microscopy. The primordium is tetra-zonate and gives rise to an anatropous ovule. The archesporium may consist of one or more archesporial cells, but only one of them undergoes meiosis, forming a linear shaped tetrad. Normally, only a single megaspore is functional, which is located in the chalazal position, while the others degenerate very soon. The young ovule is hemianatropous but the mature one is anatropous, crassinucellar, and bitegmic; integuments form a zig-zag micropyle. Twenty-four new records for freshwater algae of Turkey were determined in a study conducted from February 2007 to January 2009 in Çaygören Reservoir, Balıkesir, Turkey. Among these, 3 were Cyanobacteria, 3 Euglenophyta, 15 Chlorophyta, 1 Charophyta, 1 Heterokontophyta, and 1 was Dinophyta.

Onosma beyazoglui Kandemir & Z. Türkmen sp. nov. (Boraginaceae) is described as a new species from the province of Erzincan in Turkey. Diagnostic morphological characters of this new species from the related species are discussed.

Seed Morphology Of Ebenus L. Species Endemic To Turkey, Fatma Bayrakdar, Zeki̇ Aytaç, Zeki̇ye Suludere, Selami̇ Candan

In the present study, seed surface morphology of species of the genus Ebenus L. in Turkey, all of which are endemic, was studied. E. plumosa var. speciosa has the biggest and E. laguroides var. laguroides has the smallest seeds. The seed shapes are spheroid in E. reesei, orbiculate in E. pisidica, and oblong-spheroid in others. Ornamentation is striate in E. macrophylla, rugose in E. haussknechtii, and reticulate or multi-reticulate in others. Microphylle is subterminal in all Turkish Ebenus species.

The effects of 2 nitrate levels, 14 (CK) and 140 mmol L^{-1} (T), on the leaf gas exchange variables of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Xintaimici) seedlings grown in hydroponic culture were investigated. Photosynthetic light- and CO_{2}-response curves from CK and T seedlings were determined and used for the analysis of photosynthetic capacity. The results showed that nitrate stress resulted in a significant reduction of net photosynthesis of T seedlings compared with CK. At the same time, the apparent quantum yield, light-saturated net photosynthesis, carboxylation efficiency, and CO_{2}-saturated net photosynthesis in nitrate-stressed cucumbers also decreased significantly with the increase of …

Hypocotyl explants of 3 flax cultivars were cultured for adventitious shoot regeneration in 3 different ways. Two pretreatment applications were compared with the routinely applied conventional regeneration protocol of culturing explants directly on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1 mg L^{-1} 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.02 mg L^{-1} naphthalene acetic acid (NAA).
