Walleye Sander vitreus and smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu were sampled monthly (May-October) from Lake Sharpe, South Dakota during 2006 and 2007 to estimate the timing of otolith annulus formation and to evaluate the influence of fish age, sex, and sample location (walleye only) on the timing and detection of annulus formation. Timing of annulus formation was evaluated using marginal increment analysis. Walleye samples were stratified by age, sex, and sample location (i.e., upper and lower Lake Sharpe) and smallmouth bass samples were stratified by age and sex. Shearing Lambs Improves Growth Performance During Periods With Elevated Thermal Load, Jake J. Herrig, Simone M. Holt, J.A. Daniel

The purpose of this study was to determine if average daily gain (ADG) is improved in shorn lambs versus non-shorn lambs in the summer months in the upper Midwestern United States. Forty-nine purebred Hampshire and Columbia ram (n = 10 Hampshire and 4 Columbia) and ewe (n = 22 Hampshire and 13 Columbia) lambs were grouped by breed, sex, age (104 ± 1.7 days of age), and initial weight (109 ± 3.5 lbs) into shorn (n=26) and non-shorn (n=23) groups. Cows were genotyped at the kappa-casein and beta-lactoglobulin loci and evaluated for milk yield, calf birth weight, weaning weight, and average daily gain from birth to 109 days and from birth to 21 1 days of age. The interaction of breed-group with genotype was significant for milk yield at both loci. Cow genotype and additive allelic effects were significant or approached significance for both measures of calf average daily gain and weaning weight at the kappa-casein locus.
