Esterase Mediated Insecticide Resistance In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus, Vivek Pokhrel Nov 2022

Esterase Mediated Insecticide Resistance In The Southern House Mosquito, Culex Quinquefasciatus, Vivek Pokhrel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Much is known about the development of insecticide resistance associated with targeted application against insect populations. However, off-target selection by applications of insecticides in agricultural and residential sites also impacts development of insecticide resistance and is understudied. Similarly, the impact of selecting one life stage of mosquitoes on the insecticide susceptibility of different life stages is largely unknown. The first part of this study shows that susceptibility to chlorantraniliprole, which is applied in rice and sugarcane fields in LA, decreased (5.7 to12-fold) in populations of Culex quinquefasciatus collected from near these fields compared to a reference field strain. In addition, …

Development And Evaluation Of Environmentally-Sensitive Genetic Male Sterile Lines For Louisiana Hybrid Rice, Federico Molina Casella Oct 2017

Development And Evaluation Of Environmentally-Sensitive Genetic Male Sterile Lines For Louisiana Hybrid Rice, Federico Molina Casella

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Louisiana rice industry generates ~ 400 million dollars each year toward our state economy. Louisiana varieties are typically bred as pure lines, but hybrid (F1) varieties have the potential to increase grain yields 15% or more over conventional sources. A primary goal of the LSU AgCenter Hybrid Breeding program is to breed elite cross combinations (hybrid varieties) through development of environmentally sensitive male sterile and fertile pollinator lines. Extensive multi-location yield trials in Louisiana have demonstrated high grain and head rice yields for candidate hybrids, but improvements in maturity, lodging, and grain chalk are needed. To address …

Patterns Of Diversification In A Neotropical Radiation Of Birds (Aves: Furnariidae), Glenn F. Seeholzer Jan 2017

Patterns Of Diversification In A Neotropical Radiation Of Birds (Aves: Furnariidae), Glenn F. Seeholzer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ecology and the role of natural selection in lineage diversification has been a central topic in evolutionary biology since Darwin. At the macroevolutionary scale, this idea is embodied in the ecological theory of adaptive radiation, which posits that rapid diversification is driven by ecological adaptive radiation in which speciation is coupled with niche divergence. Within species, the theory of ecological speciation proposes that local adaptation drives speciation by reducing gene flow among populations occupying different environments either by directly reducing migration or by reducing the fitness of migrants. Much progress has been made testing these predictions in a multitude of …
