The Neural Organization Of The Lamina Ganglionaris In The Crab Hemigrapsus Nudus A Light And Electron Microscope Study, Hsu-Cheng Huang
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The gross structure and the neural arrangements in the optic lamina of crab Hemigrapsus nudus have been studied by light microscopy Golgi techniques and by electron microscopy. The lamina from distal to proximal is composed of a distinct cell layer, a fibular synaptic region, the plexiform layer, a spares cell layer, and the first optic chiasma. Golgi preparation of the lamina reveal four types of cells contributing to the lamina synaptic layer. Retinula cell axons and terminations, monopolar neurons with perikarya in the distal cell layer, tangential cells, neurons whose primary process enters from the chiasma with secondary processes branching …
Electrophoretic Mobilities Of Topoisomers Of Φx174 Dna, Virginia Mckee Hanson
Electrophoretic Mobilities Of Topoisomers Of Φx174 Dna, Virginia Mckee Hanson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The analysis of nucleic acid structure by zone electrophoresis in agarose gels has become an increasingly important method in studies requiring the separation and identification of species differing only slightly in molecular weight or conformation. We have demonstrated the existence of several circular DNA forms that appear in cells infected with the bacteriophage ΦX174.
Wt/am3 heteroduplex molecules containing a single base mismatch (relaxed RFI molecules) were constructed in vitro, purified by sedimentation, and analyzed by zone electrophoresis on 1.4% agarose gels. In order to verify that the band of denaturation-resistant heteroduplex was indeed relaxed RFI, we compared …
The Effect Of Hypercholesterolemia On The Membrane Lipids, 3-0-[¹⁴C] Methylglucose Transport, And 2,3-Diphosphoglycerate Levels In Rat Erythrocytes, Edwin J. Lester Jr.
The Effect Of Hypercholesterolemia On The Membrane Lipids, 3-0-[¹⁴C] Methylglucose Transport, And 2,3-Diphosphoglycerate Levels In Rat Erythrocytes, Edwin J. Lester Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An increase in dietary cholesterol and cholic acid will produce hypercholesterolemia in rats. For ten months, two groups of rats (six in each group) were fed commercial rat pellets (control group) or rat pellets plus cholesterol (1%) and cholic acid (0.25%) (experimental group). A blood sample from each animal was divided into three aliquots for three separate experiments on the erythrocytes: a membrane cholesterol and phospholipid determination, a 3-0-[14C] methylglucose (30MG) transport determination, and a 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DPG) determination. The 30MG transport and 2,3 DPG aliquots were each incubated in the same five concentrations of 30MG and glucose …

The Effects Of Orthodontic Repositioning Into A Surgically Expanded Site On Bone Formation And Tooth Mobility In A Baboon, Anthony B. Lier
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
For sometime, expansion of the maxillary arch, by means of surgical and mechanical procedures, have been acknowledged with minimal attention directed toward the mandible. In this pilot study a surgical technique was employed in separating the mandible, A-P, at the symphysis. The interosseous void, approximately 10 mm., was then filled with autogenous bone marrow collected from the greater trochanter and the crest of the ilium.
The surgical site was then maintained for a period of eight (8) weeks with the aid of a precast chromium-cobalt splint and titanium mesh placed intradentally and at the symphysis, respectively. Following the stabilization period …

The Effects Of Levamisole, Corynebacterium Parvum, And Unblocked Lymphocytes On Mice Injected With Herpes Virus Type 2-Transformed Cells, Linda Martin Kelln
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The association between herpes simplex virus type-2 and carcinoma of the cervix is becoming increasingly strong (Rawls, et al., 1976 ; Rapp and Duff, 1974; Hollingshead, et al-, 1973). This study demonstrates the ability of certain known immunostimulators to beneficially· alter the immune status of mice injected with HSV-2 transformed cells.
Balb/c mice were randomly divided into 6 groups. Group 1 mice were used as negative controls and received no tumor cell injection. All other groups received subcutaneous injections of 1 x 106 cells/ mouse. Tumor therapy by means of irrmunostimulation was started for each group of mice 1 …
Zinc Intake Of Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarian And Non-Vegetarian Adults, Rosalind C. Phillips
Zinc Intake Of Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarian And Non-Vegetarian Adults, Rosalind C. Phillips
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Zinc intakes of 12 matched pairs of lacto-ovo-vegetarian and non-vegetarian adults were compared. Analysis of 72-hour aliquots of food intake excluding supplements showed the mean daily zinc intake for both categories (lacto-ovo-vegetarians, 37.93 + 23.97 mg.; non-vegetarians, 53.39 + 31.99 mg.) to generously exceed the Recommended Daily Allowance, which is 15 mg. A significant difference of zinc intake occurred between the two groups (p< .005), with a trend toward higher zinc intake by the non-vegetarian member of each pair.
The Role Of The Parotid Salivary Glands In The Regulation Of Insulin Secretion, Kenneth L. Millard
The Role Of The Parotid Salivary Glands In The Regulation Of Insulin Secretion, Kenneth L. Millard
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Stress of handling, partial or complete sialoadenectomy, and the administration of parotid hormone (PH), sodium fluoride (NaF), or guanidino-succinic acid (GSA) were examined for effects on fasting plasma glucose and insulin or effects on intravenous glucose tolerance in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Basal glucose and insulin were substantially elevated as a result of the stress of translocation in large animals, but were not altered in small animals. A rise in plasma insulin occured in control animals 20 minutes following anesthesia and the removal of a blood sample by cardiac puncture but not in animals that had been handled twice daily for …
The Effect Of A Maternal Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarian Diet On The Infants Plasma Cholesterol Concentration, Laura Munson Ball
The Effect Of A Maternal Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarian Diet On The Infants Plasma Cholesterol Concentration, Laura Munson Ball
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A comparison of plasma cholesterol concentrations was made between breast-fed infants having lacto-ovo-vegetarian mothers, breast-fed infants having non-vegetarian mothers and infants fed with commercially prepared formula. At one month of age , the breast-fed infants (n=20) with non-vegetarian mothers comprised the group with the greatest average plasma cholesterol concentration. As expected, the plasma cholesterol of the formula-fed group (n=9) was significantly less, (p
Mechanisms Of Control Of Blood Flow In The Forelimb Of Sheep, Paul J. Marks
Mechanisms Of Control Of Blood Flow In The Forelimb Of Sheep, Paul J. Marks
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Although much is known about the factors involved in the control of blood flow, the cellular mechanisms of their action are poorly understood. This study investigated the mechanisms of norepinephrine, epinephrine, isoproterenol, and acetylcholine.
First, in a constant pressure/variable flow preparation we characterized the sheep brachial artery blood flow response to, and recovery from, 10-min infusions of each of these drugs. Then we used a computer model to simulate changes in blood flow in response to altered ion permeabilities or pump speeds (the mechanisms). We tried to produce responses like those to the drug infusions so that we could infer …
A Morphometrical Analysis Of The Guinea Pig Placenta After Chronic Exposure To Carbon Monoxide, Marcella J. Woolsey
A Morphometrical Analysis Of The Guinea Pig Placenta After Chronic Exposure To Carbon Monoxide, Marcella J. Woolsey
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
We used morphometric analysis to determine if placental structure is modified by carbon monoxide, Camm-Hartley guinea pigs were exposed throughout gestation to chronic conditions of carbon monoxide (averaging about 180 parts per million). Maternal weight, placental weight, fetal weight, and fetal length were recorded at the time of placental fixation. Using a computerized image analyzer on photomicrographs obtained through light microscopy, we measured maternal and fetal percent vessel volumes, surface areas, and vessel numbers. Maternal vessel numbers and surface area remained basically unchanged but decreased slightly. Maternal percent volume decreased 15%. However, fetal capillary number increased 35% (p < 0.01) from a control value of 2325 ± 184 per mm2 (SE …
The Mechanism Of Aerotaxis In Salmonella Typhimurium, Daniel John Laszlo
The Mechanism Of Aerotaxis In Salmonella Typhimurium, Daniel John Laszlo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Chemotaxis is the migrational response of bacteria to chemical gradients. Aerotaxis, the response to oxygen, was among the earliest observed tactic phenomena, but progress in the study of aerotaxis was previously limited by the available assays. These assays relied upon oxygen depletion by the bacteria to generate the oxygen gradient which elicits the behavioral response. Such assays are unsuitable for analyzing the role of the electron transport system in aerotaxis. In this study the biochemical mechanism of aerotaxis and its relationship to other chemotaxis pathways in Salmonella typhimurium was explored with the aid of two new assays which imposed an …
The Effect Of Exercise On Blood Flow In Pregnant Guinea Pigs, Marjorie Correll Sladek
The Effect Of Exercise On Blood Flow In Pregnant Guinea Pigs, Marjorie Correll Sladek
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Recent investigations have shown decreased fetal weight in pregnant animals who were exercised regularly during pregnancy (Gilbert; Nelson; Longo, 1979; Terada, 1974). The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate fetal weight gain and measure blood flow in pregnant guinea pigs who were exercised 45 minutes per day; and thus answer the hypothesis that prolonged maternal exercise will cause decreased weight gain and decreased placental blood flow during pregnancy.
Twenty pregnant guinea pigs were exercised 15 minutes three times daily from 10 days gestation to approximately 60-62 days gestation (67 days being term) and were compared with 19 control …
Effect Of Simulated Tidal Patterns On Growth And Growth Line Formation In The Little Neck Clam, Protothaca Staminea, Orlando Irsula
Effect Of Simulated Tidal Patterns On Growth And Growth Line Formation In The Little Neck Clam, Protothaca Staminea, Orlando Irsula
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Growth lines in bivalve mollusks have been thought to reflect solar days, circadian rhythms and/or tides. Tides seem to be the dominating influence in some intertidal species. This study provides laboratory evidence suggesting that tides are a major influence in the number of growth lines in the clam Protothaca staminea.
Clams were grown under 4 different "tidal" regimes, (0, 1, 2 and 3 tides per day) for forty-one days. Acetate peels of shell cross sections were used for growth line counting. Photomicrographs and measurements showed a striking difference in the growth and number of growth lines between the 4 tidal …

Vegetation Responses To Prescribed Burning In A Mixed-Conifer Woodland, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, California, Bradford D. Martin
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study reports the results of light intensity prescribed burning on the vegetation of 3 jeffrey pine-black oak woodland sites in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, California. The 1.2 ha, 85 ha, and 6 ha burn plots were measured for tree and shrub density and basal area 6 months, 1% years, and 2 years following burning for the 3 sites respectively. Each burn site measured was compared against equivalent unburned control plots to help assess the effects of the burning. Density of saplings, seedlings, and herbaceous vegetation was also determined for the woodland understories. Dominance and relative dominance of herbaceous ground …

The Effect Of Folic Acid Supplementation On Gingival Healing After Oral Hygiene Therapy, Marilyn J. Wankier
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
To determine the effect of folic acid supplementation on gingival healing after oral hygiene therapy, eight teeth (#3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14) of sixteen human subjects with moderate levels of gingival irritation were studied. Clinical parameters included measurement of gingival fluid, pocket depth, bleeding upon probing, and plaque. Serum and red blood cell folic acid levels were determined using radioimmunoassay (RIA). Based on clinical parameters and serum folate levels, two similarly matched groups were established. The teeth were scaled and polished. Brushing and flossing instructions were given.
After one week of oral hygiene therapy alone, the experimental …

Palynological Correlation Of The Kentucky No. 12 Coal, Gerald E. Vyhmeister
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In attempting to analyze the depositional environment for the Kentucky No. 12 Coal three columns were sampled from a 1 km area. The columns yielded 76 miospore species belonging to 33 genera, and representing in decreasing order of abundance, arborescent lycopods, tree ferns, calamites, small ferns, gymnospermous trees, seed ferns, herbaceous lycopods, and others from unknown origin.
The pattern of spore distribution in the columns did not appear to be affected by the presence of several partings, a feature which calls into question several mechanisms proposed for the origin of partings and also creates difficulties for an autochthonous origin for …
