Lecture Notes For Nscp-Funded Short Course - Remote Sensing Training For Resource Officers And Farmers, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture

Soil conservation survey collection

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to remote sensing, and knowledge and practice in image processing techniques for the extraction of information from remotely sensed data. Aerial photography is the original form of earth remote sensing, and is still a widely used and important data source for many purposes. This course is directed principally at the analysis of digital image data recorded by satellite or airborne platforms. Remote sensing is considered to be the methodology of collecting and interpreting target information over a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum.

This second annual report provides summary information on these occurrences. The main body of the report focuses on mortality records collected by Departmental advisory staff when farmers sought information on ARGT during this period.

Visions For Agriculture, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Oct 1992

Visions For Agriculture, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Agriculture reports

This workshop grew out of a conversation between Maurice Barnes, a Trayning farmer and member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Dryland Research Institute, and Steve Porritt, the officer in charge of the Dryland Research Institute at Merredin. Maurice was interested in the idea of posing the question 'What would agriculture be like if we had known as much about this landscape in 1829 as we know now?', to a group of farmers and others interested in the central wheatbelt and its future. Maurice saw this question as a first step toward achieving some shared vision for the future …

Distribution And Ecological Significance Of On-Farm Bushland Remnants In The Southern Wheatbelt Region Of Western Australia, F Mollemans, G Beeston

Soil conservation survey collection

The Southern Wheatbelt Region Remnant Vegetation Survey was funded by the Save the Bush program, and aimed at surveying pieces of on-farm remnant vegetation in the "Great Southern" of Western Australia. At the outset a total of 13 shires were selected for survey, namely: Broomehill, Corrigin, Dumbleyung, Katanning, Kent, Kondinin, Kulin, Lake Grace, Narrogin, Tambellup, Wagin, Wickepin, Woodanilling. However, time constraints (available funding indicated a time frame of 40 weeks for the project to be completed) meant that subsequently Kent and Lake Grace shires (two of the largest) had to be dropped from the survey to allow for proper completion …

Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee Report To The Minister For Fisheries April 1992, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee Apr 1992

Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee Report To The Minister For Fisheries April 1992, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee

Fisheries management papers

The Committee recommended: For the next five seasons the principal tools of management for the rock lobster fishery should be temporary and variable reductions in pot usage, without affecting the permanent pot entitlement of any operator. The number of pots a fisherman can use at any particular time within a season will be set in accordance with a schedule showing the total permanent pot authorisation and the number of pots permitted to be used. Maximum size controls. These sizes would be 120 mm for females and 130 mm for males north of Moore River and about 125 mm for females …

Influence Of Water Supply On Farm Productivity In The North-Eastern Wheatbelt, E J. Hauck Apr 1992

Influence Of Water Supply On Farm Productivity In The North-Eastern Wheatbelt, E J. Hauck

Resource management technical reports

In the area with reliable reticulated water supplies, average what yield, average wool production and average number of sheep per pastured hectare showed a positive correlation with annual rainfall in all but one year. By contrast, in the area served by on-farm water supplies only, average wheat yield and annual rainfall were strongly correlated, whereas average wool production and average number of sheep per pastured hectare showed a weaker correlation with annual rainfall. These correlations suggest tt on farms with a reliable water supply, livestock numbers have been adjusted annually to ensure optimum utilisation of available feed in all seasons.

No-Tillage Seeders And Their Adoption In North America With Relevance To Western Australia, J K. Bligh

Resource management technical reports

The adoption of no-tillage seeders appears generally to be at a similar stage in North America as in Western Australia. One notable difference is the communication provided by several no-tillage farmers organisations, such as the Manitoba-North Dakota Zero Tillage Farmers Association. Since almost all development of no-tillage systems has been carried out by farmers, such associations have proven invaluable in directly providing communication with their peers.

Quest For Quality Operation Quality Wheat, Sue Bestow Mar 1992

Quest For Quality Operation Quality Wheat, Sue Bestow

Agriculture reports

Variations in the protein content of wheat are largely associated with growing conditions, particularly rainfall and soil type, which influence nitrogen supply and crop yield. Management to improve protein generally also improves yield, so in future both must be considered when comparing profitabilities of management options, particularly if payment for protein increases.

Growth And Wool Production Of Merino Wethers After Treatment With Testosterone, M A. Johns, A Meldrum, J F. Wallace, K P. Croker, F E. Watson

Technical Bulletins

The results were variable with there being no response to the testosterone treatment of the weaners in year 2 which were weaned onto dry feed. In the other two years, the weaners grazed at the lower stocking rates were heavier and there appeared to be a general increase in the weight of those injected with testosterone. However, the level of response was not consistent and in year 3 there was no response while the sheep grazed green feed for four months or so following weaning.

Farmer Groups - A Fad Or The Future, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Jan 1992

Farmer Groups - A Fad Or The Future, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

All other publications

The question I have asked is 'Are farmer groups a fad or the future?' I believe there is no question about it. Farmer groups ARE an important part of future agricultural extension. With shrinking government resources devoted to extension, a farmer group approach has many advantages. These advantages have been shown in Western Australia with landcare catchment groups and lice cell groups and these have been recognised by both extension workers and farmers. What makes these groups different to groups of the past? Farmer groups have come and gone in an almost cyclical fashion. An exception is the Kondinin Group, …

Fodder Trees And Shrubs For High Rainfall Areas Of South Western Australia, Daya Patabendige, P R. Scott, Edward C. Lefroy Jan 1992

Fodder Trees And Shrubs For High Rainfall Areas Of South Western Australia, Daya Patabendige, P R. Scott, Edward C. Lefroy

Resource management technical reports

In south Western Australia, the lack of good quality feed in late summer and autumn is a major constraint to livestock production. This feed gap is usually filled by costly supplementary hand feeding of grain or hay. The ability of some trees and shrubs to provide good quality forage during summer and autumn has generated interest for many years (Corbett, 1951; Everist, 1969; Snook, 1987;Oldham et al., 1991, Lefroy, 1991). The dual benefits of reducing the need for supplementary hand feeding and deferring the grazing of annual pastures until they are well established has recently led to the recognition of …

Navail Spreadsheet, S J. Burgess Jan 1992

Navail Spreadsheet, S J. Burgess

Agriculture reports

A computer program called NPDECIDE has been developed by the Western Australian Department of Agriculture to assist with decisions relating to the use of phosphorus fertiliser on cereal crops. NPDECIDE functions by estimating the response of the crop to combinations of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilisers, and by indicating the likely profit from the use of these materials. In order to carry out this task, NPDECIDE must be able to calculate the availability to the growing plants of nitrogen from the fertilisers and from organic material in the soil.
