Cerebral malaria (CM), a severe manifestation of Plasmodium infection, prompts our investigation into the nuanced role of pipecolic acid in its pathophysiology. To unravel the molecular intricacies, we conducted in vitro lysine labeling techniques of mice infected with P. berghei ANKA parasites, and human P. falciparum grown in vitro, aiming to discern the impact of Plasmodium on pipecolic acid production. Previous observations indicated an elevation in pipecolic acid levels correlating with neurological decline in children with CM. As short genomic markers, DNA barcodes can play a role in conservation by identifying cryptic species and hybrids when morphological approaches fall short. Here we present our application of barcodes to the identities of two wetland taxa as part of an ongoing floristic inventory of Van Cortlandt Park (VCP), Bronx, NY. Previous barcode data by Marriott et al. (2018) identified the VCP lake water lily as the exotic Nymphaea alba, rather than the native N. odorata as historically described. The removal of introns from pre-messenger RNA via splicing in the nucleus is an essential step in gene expression. In recent decades, significant effort has been made to understand the chemical mechanisms of splicing reactions and the composition of the spliceosome that catalyzes them. Yet very little is known about the exact function of many splicing factors and small proteins within the spliceosome. Slu7, a pre-mRNA splicing factor, is essential during the second catalytic step of splicing because it interacts with several proteins and stabilizes the active site conformation. The Klebsormidiophyceae are a class of green microalgae found globally in both freshwater and terrestrial habitats. Morphology-based classification schemes of this class have been shown to be insufficient, particularly due to the simple morphology of these algae, the tendency of morphology to vary in culture versus in field conditions, and rampant morphological homoplasy. Molecular studies revealing cryptic diversity have renewed interest in this group. Sinorhizobium meliloti is a nitrogen-fixing flagellated soil bacterium that engages in a mutual symbiotic relationship with the legume Medicago sativa. Using its flagella, S. meliloti is chemotactic in response to varying environmental cues thereby directed to a target, which is typically the root hairs of M. sativa. Lu et al, 2012 suggested that a signal from the plant can switch S. meliloti from a free-living flagellated microbe to a host-invading non-flagellated microbe, although this signal has not been identified. Given the limited regenerative capacity of the mammalian retina, cell-replacement strategies are necessary. To replace photoreceptors lost to disease or trauma and restore visual function, laboratories throughout the world are researching photoreceptors replacement strategies using subretinal transplantation of retinal progenitor cells (RPCs). A major obstacle to the advancement of photoreceptor cell-replacement strategies includes low rates of invasion and integration of transplanted cells into the host retina. Currently, there is a limited understanding of how RPC glycolysis may facilitate invasion.
