FA Finding Aids

Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 1063. Paper titled “Butchering and Rendering: Now and Then” in which Carl Miller describes the lengthy hog butchering process from slaughtering to wrapping and freezing. Paper is based on information collected by Miller from Buddy Crabtree, a butcher in Smiths Grove, Kentucky.

Detection Of Tetracyclines In An Anaerobic Waste Digester Using Solid Phase Extraction And High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, Courtney Cruse Jun 2017

Detection Of Tetracyclines In An Anaerobic Waste Digester Using Solid Phase Extraction And High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, Courtney Cruse

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Antibiotics are introduced to livestock to encourage growth and for the treatment of diseases. These antibiotics are not completely metabolized by swine, and thus these antibiotics are excreted with their waste. This poses a potential risk to human health as these antibiotics, a potential link to antibiotic resistant bacteria, then enter the surface water, ground water, and soil. In collaboration with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Bowling Green, Kentucky, this research is concerned with analyzing the degradation of tetracyclines in swine waste from an anaerobic digester. Waste samples obtained from a digester and swine waste at the USDA …

Narrative is in interview format and is illustrated with photographs. This information was collected by Western Kentucky University student Edward B. Barr for credit in a folklore class.

The Effect Of Breeding Herd Parity Structure On Genetic Improvement Of The Sow Herd, Caitlyn E. Abell May 2009

The Effect Of Breeding Herd Parity Structure On Genetic Improvement Of The Sow Herd, Caitlyn E. Abell

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study focuses on the value of the genetic lag associated with maintaining sows for additional parities in a commercial swine herd. Three traits were included in this study: number born alive (NBA), 21 day litter weight (W21), and days to market (D250). The economic values assigned to these traits were $22.00/pig, $0.70/lb., and $0.17/day, respectively. The genetic improvement per generation made for each trait was assumed to be 0.3 pigs, 3.0 lbs., and 3.0 days, respectively. It was estimated that the value of the genetic lag associated with retaining a sow to P3, P5, and P7 was $24.80, $46.89, …

Can Extra Fat Make Healthier Hogs?, Anne Elise Clark Apr 1992

Can Extra Fat Make Healthier Hogs?, Anne Elise Clark

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Based on research by Fritsche (1991), Kelley (1988), and Caruso and Jeska (1990), it has been postulated that the addition of omega-3 fatty acids to the diet enhances the immune response of several species. This study was an attempt to ascertain the effects of addition of dietary omega-3 fatty acids in the form of ground flax contained in Omega Gold on the immune response of swine. The goal of this study was twofold: to determine the effects of ground flax on the humoral immunity of young pigs, and to differentiate between effects gained from enhancement of passive and active immunity. …

Performance & Carcass Traits Of Swine Of Four Different Phenotypes & Three Usda Grades, Jon Althaus Dec 1988

Performance & Carcass Traits Of Swine Of Four Different Phenotypes & Three Usda Grades, Jon Althaus

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to compare the performance and carcass characteristics of swine of four different phenotypes and three USDA grades.

Hogs were placed into phenotypic groups of 24 each and penned by group. These pens were ideal, cutability, light muscled, fat, VS US and US The hops were fed a 16% corn and soybean meal ration fortified with appropriate minerals and vitamins. They were housed in a total confinement curtain-sided Kentucky plan building with a partially slatted floor. The hogs were weighed at 6-week intervals throughout the project to monitor average daily gain and pen feed efficiency. …

Comparisons Of Performance & Carcass Traits Of Littermate Boars & Barrows, Hiromi Hirano May 1987

Comparisons Of Performance & Carcass Traits Of Littermate Boars & Barrows, Hiromi Hirano

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine differences between littermate boars and barrows for performance and carcass traits in the Iowa and Northeast Iowa Swine Testing Stations. Data were obtained from 917 litters including 1,804 boars and 917 barrows. The data included 1,086 boars and 581 barrows from the Iowa Station at Ames, Iowa, and 718 boars and 336 barrows from the Northeast Iowa Station at New Hampton, Iowa. The Iowa Station data were obtained over a period of 12 seasons from the fall of 1979 through the fall of 1985, and the data from the Northeast Iowa Station …

Comparison Of Iron Supplements For The Prevention Of Anemia In Young Pigs, Steve Hieronymus May 1977

Comparison Of Iron Supplements For The Prevention Of Anemia In Young Pigs, Steve Hieronymus

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Crete Koate® product originally intended to be utilized for absorbing excess moisture and reducing knee abrasions of baby pigs raised in confinement, was tested as a hematinic for young pigs. Four treatments were studied: (1) T-NI, pigs receiving no iron; (2) T-IS, pigs receiving a 2 ml intramuscular injection of iron-dextran at 2 days of age; (3) T-CK, pigs raised in pens treated daily with Crete Koate; (4) T-ISCK, pics receiving an intramuscular injection of iron-dextran on day 2 whose pens received daily treatments of Crete Koate. Hemoglobin levels were used as an indicator of iron status in the …

Iron Requirement Of Pigs Farrowed In Metal Farrowing Stalls, Rebecca Walker May 1976

Iron Requirement Of Pigs Farrowed In Metal Farrowing Stalls, Rebecca Walker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Pigs farrowed and reared in metal farrowing stalls were studied to determine the need for iron. Three treatments were studied, namely—T-O (pigs given no iron injection), T-1 (pigs given 1 iron-dextran injection at 2 days of age) and T-2 (pigs given 2 injections of iron-dextran, the first at day 2 and the second at day 7). Hemoglobin levels were analyzed to determine the incorporation of iron in the bloodstream in the form of hemoglobin. Pig weights were used as a measure of production.

The hemoglobin levels did not differ (p>0.1) among the 3 treatments at birth, 4 days, 6 …
