Sediment collections from the southern Gulf of Mexico between the Texas—Mexico border and the Yucatán Peninsula have resulted in many new kinorhynch species distribution records and the finding and taxonomic description of a new species, Dracoderes chaac sp. nov. This study focused on the non—echinoderid members of the Phylum Kinorhyncha, many of which are rare or restricted to only a few locations. A total of 136 specimens were identified from 24 sediment stations, distributed among the following species: Antygomonas gwenae, Campyloderes vanhoeffeni, Centroderes readae, Condyloderes flosfimbriatus, Co. rohalorum, Cristaphyes panamensis, Dracoderes chaac sp. nov., …

Morphological Features Of Taxonomical Value For The Identification Of Three Western Atlantic Penaeid Shrimp Genera (Decopoda: Penaeidae), Maria M. Criales, Carlos Varela

Rostra, telsons and patterns of sternal spines were examined for Western Atlantic penaeid shrimps Metapenaeopsis, Rimapenaeus and Farfantepenaeus to facilitate the identification of postlarval and juvenile stages and clarify the patterns of sternal spines previously proposed as a useful tool for identifying penaeid postlarvae at the generic level. Examination of the telsons and rostra from closely related Metapenaeopsis and Rimapenaeus species indicated that at the postlarval stages these morphological features are very similar in shape and size. Regarding the sternal spines, Metapenaeopsis spp. bear a pair on the second thoracic plate, while Rimapenaeus spp. lack thoracic spines. The different pattern …

Brachylicoa Lui, A New Species Of Parapseudid Tanaidacean (Crustacea: Peracarida: Apseudomorpha), From The Hawaiian Islands, With A Taxonomic Key, Andrés G. Morales-Núñez, Sterling Ulrich, Richard W. Heard

Brachylicoa lui sp. n. is described from the coastal waters of the Hawaiian island of O‘ahu. It is distinguished from the other four nominal members of Brachylicoa by a combination of characters including (1) an incised margin between base of rostrum and carapace, (2) mandible palp article-1 with cluster of 20–25 simple setae, (3) maxillule biarticulate palp ending in eight “cleaning’ setae, (4) maxilliped inner sub-distal margin with two stout spiniform seta, and (5) pereopod-6 with carpus having three plumose setae on mid-dorsal margin. The field of zooplankton biology contributes to more accurate stock assessments as well as to a greater understanding of the marine food web. However, adequate information for the invertebrate component of zooplankton is lacking compared to the ichthyoplankton component. In this thesis, identification of Portunidae (Crustacea: Decapoda) megalopae collected during the fall of 2003 from a NOAA SEAMAP cruise revealed 7 species and 11 morphs with 90% of the total density comprised of Callinectes sapidus, Achelous gibbesii, Callinectes similis, Achelous spinicarpus, and Achelous sp.I. Leucothoid amphipods were collected from sponge, ascidian, and bivalve mollusk hosts around Bocas del Toro, Panama. New host and locality records are reported for 10 species. Morphological variation is noted in some species originally described from Belize and South Florida. Future molecular research will help to clarify the importance of this variation. A key to the Caribbean species of the Leucothoidae collected around Bocas del Toro, Panama is provided based on morphological characters.

A single adult female specimen of the calanoid copepod Ctenocalanus heronaeVega-Pérez and Bowman was collected during a zooplankton survey carried out in February 1997 in Campeche Sound, the central-southeastern portion of the Gulf of Mexico. The taxonomy of the genus Ctenocalanus Giesbrecht is still unclear. Characters used to separate the species have been considered rather subtle. In this paper the taxonomic illustrations of the specimen collected are accompanied by a revision of the taxonomic features commonly used to identify the species. Tropedotea lyonsi Menzies and Kruczynski, 1983, is reported from the waters off Alabama southeastward to Cape Romano, Florida. The monotypic genus Tropedotea was recently erected on the basis of coxal plates of pereonites V to VI1 visible in dorsal view and a reduced number of articles in both antennae. Pereonites V to VI11 are also visible in dorsal view in Edotea Guérin-Ménéville, 1843, and the number of articles in antenna 1 and 2 of Tropedotea Menzies and Kruczynski, 1983, is the same as in Edotea.
