A Method For Estimating Marine Habitat Values Based On Fish Guilds, With Comparisons Between Sites In The Southern California Bight, Alan Bond, John Stephens, Daniel Pondella, James Allen, Mark Helvey

Alan B. Bond

Habitat valuation is an essential tool for tracking changes in habitat quality and in adjudicating environmental mitigation. All current methods for estimating habitat values of coastal marine sites rely heavily on the opinion of experts or on data variables that can readily be manipulated to influence the outcome. As a result, unbiased, quantitative comparisons between the values of different marine habitats are generally unavailable. We report here on a robust, objective technique for the valuation of marine habitats that makes use of data that are commonly gathered in surveys of marine fish populations: density, fidelity, and mean size. To insure …

Monogenic Control Of Iris Coloration In The January Tetra (Hemigrammus Hyanuary Characidae), Jack Frankel Nov 1999

Monogenic Control Of Iris Coloration In The January Tetra (Hemigrammus Hyanuary Characidae), Jack Frankel

Jack Frankel

The January tetra (Hemigrammus hyanuary Durbin) exhibits two eye color phenotypes. These have a silver iris, which is characteristic of the species, and a green color variant. Segregation patterns observed in the progenies from 12 different crosses support an hypothesis for the monogenic inheritance of iris coloration in this species.

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

The objective of this study was the research of novel and inexpensive sources of polysaccharides degrading enzymes such as amylases and glucanases from local plants in order to justify their biotechnological applications. The isolation of two l3-amylases and an endo-1,3-ß-D-glucanase was reached using common protein purification methods such as buffer extraction, ammonium sulfate fractionation, ionexchange and gel filtration chromatographies. The methods used were simple and easily reproducible, suggesting the possibilfty of large-scale production. ln the crude extract of Curculigo pilosa tuber, only ß-amylase was detected as starch degrading enzyme and its activity was approximately 282 Uig of fresh material. The …

Genome-Wide Bioinformatic And Molecular Analysis Of Introns In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Marc Spingola, Leslie Grate, David Haussler, Manuel Ares

Marc Spingola

Introns have typically been discovered in an ad hoc fashion: introns are found as a gene is characterized for other reasons. As complete eukaryotic genome sequences become available, better methods for predicting RNA processing signals in raw sequence will be necessary in order to discover genes and predict their expression. Here we present a catalog of 228 yeast introns, arrived at through a combination of bioinformatic and molecular analysis. Introns annotated in the Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD) were evaluated, questionable introns were removed after failing a test for splicing in vivo, and known introns absent from the SGD annotation were …

Growing Pollen Tubes Possess A Constitutive Alkaline Band In The Clear Zone And A Growth-Dependent Acidic Tip, Joseph Kunkel, J, Feijo, J. Sainhas, G. Hackett, P. Hepler Dec 1998

Growing Pollen Tubes Possess A Constitutive Alkaline Band In The Clear Zone And A Growth-Dependent Acidic Tip, Joseph Kunkel, J, Feijo, J. Sainhas, G. Hackett, P. Hepler

Joseph Kunkel

Using both the proton selective vibrating electrode to probe the extracellular currents and ratiometric wide-field fluorescence microscopy with the indicator 2′,7′-bis-(2-carboxyethyl)-5-(and-6)-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF)-dextran to image the intracellular pH, we have examined the distribution and activity of protons (H+) associated with pollen tube growth. The intracellular images reveal that lily pollen tubes possess a constitutive alkaline band at the base of the clear zone and an acidic domain at the extreme apex. The extracellular observations, in close agreement, show a proton influx at the extreme apex of the pollen tube and an efflux in the region that corresponds to the position of …

Genetic Variation In Geographical Populations Of Western And Mexican Corn Rootworm., Allen L. Szalanski, Richard L. Roehrdanz, David B. Taylor, Lawrence Chandler Dec 1998

Genetic Variation In Geographical Populations Of Western And Mexican Corn Rootworm., Allen L. Szalanski, Richard L. Roehrdanz, David B. Taylor, Lawrence Chandler

David B. Taylor

Genetic variation in the nuclear rDNA ITS1 region of western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (WCR), and Mexican corn rootworm, D. v. zeae (MCR) was studied. Two sites were detected which differentiated WCR and MCR in the 642-base sequence. Polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of the first internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1) sequence revealed no variation within or among the twelve WCR and two MCR populations. PCR-RFLP of 75% of the mitochondrial DNA genome detected one significant polymorphic site out of the approximately 190 restriction sizes observed in WCR. The polymorphism did not differentiate geographical populations of …

Uptake Of Dissolved Free Amino Acids By Northern Quahogs, Mercenaria Mercenaria, And Its Relative Importance To Organic Nitrogen Deposition In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Michael A. Rice Dec 1998

Uptake Of Dissolved Free Amino Acids By Northern Quahogs, Mercenaria Mercenaria, And Its Relative Importance To Organic Nitrogen Deposition In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Michael A. Rice

Michael A Rice

Studies were undertaken to determine the relationship between size of northern quahogs Mercenaria mercenaria and the rate at which they transport aspartic acid. Quahogs ranging from 25 to 103 mm valve length were collected in Narragansett Bay and placed in seawater aquaria (27 ppt, 20 deg C) and allowed to pump actively. Uptake experiments were carried out using 1 umol/L C(14) radiolabeled aspartic acid. Aspartate transport rates in umol/h can be related to valve length by the allometric equation with a = 24.32 and b = 0.905 when valve length is in mm. In May 1990, near bottom samples of …

The Genetics And Evolution Of The Mariner Transposable Element In Drosophila Simulans: Worldwide Distribution And Experimental Population Dynamics, Amy L. Russell, R. C. Woodruff Dec 1998

The Genetics And Evolution Of The Mariner Transposable Element In Drosophila Simulans: Worldwide Distribution And Experimental Population Dynamics, Amy L. Russell, R. C. Woodruff

Amy L. Russell

We have studied both the frequency and biogeographical distribution of the transposable DNA element mariner in natural populations of Drosophila simulans and the short-term evolutionary characteristics of mariner in experimental populations. The mariner element has been identified in natural populations of D. simulans from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Japan, Australia, several Pacific islands, North America, and South America. Only four lines out of 296 were devoid of active mariner elements, as measured by the presence of functional mariner transposase. A slight correlation was found between the latitudinal coordinate of the collection sites and the level of mariner activity in …
