In search of techniques to reduce irrigation water use in the Ogallala Aquifer region, several deficit irrigation techniques were evaluated in corn and cotton production. Several iterations of deficit irrigation (based on ET), including partial root-zone deficit (PRD) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) treatments, were implemented in the 2021 and 2022 summer season. Corn and cotton did respond to the different deficit irrigation treatments. Significant yield advantages were observed in fixed PRD on both crops while RDI also showed some yield advantage for corn.

The objective of this research was to compare various novel herbicides for efficacy in fallow. An experiment compared residual herbicides for preemergence weed control in fallow. While most herbicides provided good kochia control early on, only the treatments containing Alite 27 (isoxaflutole) controlled kochia 90% or more by 50 days after treatment. Similarly, most herbicides controlled Russian thistle 83% or more early. However, Russian thistle control declined such that only the treatments containing Alite 27 provided as much as 74% control later in the season.

The objective of this study was to compare Vida (pyraflufen) tank mixtures for glyphosate- resistant kochia control in fallow. Early-season kochia control was best with tank mixtures that included Sharpen (saflufenacil), but tank mixtures including dicamba provided the best control later in the season. No herbicide controlled kochia more than 80% late in the season. All herbicides controlled downy brome more than 90% within 14 days after treatment, and 100% by 21 days after application.

The objective of this trial was to compare Assure II (quizalofop) at two rates with or without tank mix partners for grass control in fallow. Assure II at either rate alone provided similar control of volunteer corn and barley. Corn control was 90% or more regardless of rating date with all herbicides except Assure II at 8.0 oz/a plus Classic (chlorimuron) at 42 days after treatment (DAT). Tacoma (fenoxaprop) at 3.5 or 5.4 oz/a added to Assure II at 8.0 oz/a improved barley control later in the season.

Glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth has become a serious weed problem in fields following wheat harvest. A field experiment was established in 2016 near Manhattan, KS, to evaluate herbicide alternatives to glyphosate for Palmer amaranth control in wheat stubble. The two most effective postharvest herbicides for control of Palmer amaranth were Gramoxone (paraquat) or Sharpen (saflufenacil). Clarity (dicamba) and 2,4-D treatments provided suppression of Palmer amaranth, but were inconsistent, and often some plants survived and produced viable seed. The tank-mix of Clarity plus 2,4-D was more effective than either herbicide alone, but not as good as Gramoxone or Sharpen.

Atrazine alone applied in the fall was less effective for kochia and Russian thistle control than other fall- or spring-applied herbicides in early summer. In mid season, control of kochia and Russian thistle was 85% or less with all fall-applied herbicides. Banvel (dicamba) increased kochia control when added to Balance Pro (isoxaflutole), plus Autumn Super (iodosulfuron + thiencarbazone), plus atrazine applied in the spring at mid season. All other spring herbicides were similar for kochia control. Russian thistle control was similar among all spring-applied herbicides except atrazine plus Banvel.

Kochia control at 8 weeks after spring application (WAST) was greatest when Clar­ity (dicamba) was included in the spring applications or when Corvus (isoxaflutole + thiencarbazone) was applied with atrazine and Clarity in the fall. The best kochia con­trol at 13 WAST occurred with spring applications containing Clarity. Only Clarity plus Atrazine, Sharpen, Zidua, Spartan Guard, or Corvus applied in the spring provided as much as 90% kochia control at 20 WAST. Only the spring application of Spartan Guard and Clarity controlled Russian thistle 90% at 20 WAST.

With the exception of the tank mix of Sharpen and Sencor, all other tank mixes that provided 100% kochia control 53 days after treatment (DAT) were three-way tank mixes of atrazine herbicide plus, Banvel, and Balance Pro or Zidua. Only two tank mixes provided 98% kochia control 143 DAT. These were also three-way tank mixes of these chemistries. Combinations of Balance Pro and Sencor were needed to provide greater than 93% control of Russian thistle 143 DAT. No tank mix provided good control of Palmer amaranth 143 DAT.
