Establishing And Optimization Of Tissue Culture Work With Erigeron Canadensis, Robert Petursson Dec 2023

Establishing And Optimization Of Tissue Culture Work With Erigeron Canadensis, Robert Petursson

Masters Theses

Glyphosate resistance among weed species has been an increasing problem in crop production over the past two decades. Glyphosate resistant Erigeron canadensis (horseweed) has been found on multiple continents and 20 U.S. states. It appears that the resistance is of non-target type, with mechanisms of action that have yet to be elucidated at the gene level. For the first portion of the study, I focused on reproducing the original indirect organogenesis protocol but discovered biotype variability can influence regeneration success. An improved indirect organogenesis method was then developed using the previously published methods that could be used across biotypes. A …

Characterization And Management Of Auxin-Resistant Palmer Amaranth In Tennessee, Delaney C. Foster Dec 2022

Characterization And Management Of Auxin-Resistant Palmer Amaranth In Tennessee, Delaney C. Foster

Doctoral Dissertations

Palmer amaranth has a long history of evolving resistance to herbicides to the point it has become a significant row crop production obstacle. Cotton and soybean growers were offered new technologies in 2016, expanding in-crop herbicide options to include dicamba or 2,4-D. Within three years of commercialization, dicamba use in these crops increased ten-fold and growers began to report Palmer amaranth escapes in west Tennessee auxin-tolerant production systems. A survey of Palmer amaranth escapes in dicamba and 2,4-D-tolerant cotton and soybean fields in Tennessee was conducted in the fall of 2021 with the objective of determining if poor control was …

Poa Annua: An Annual Species?, Devon E. Carroll May 2022

Poa Annua: An Annual Species?, Devon E. Carroll

Doctoral Dissertations

Poa annua L. is ranked the most troublesome turfgrass weed but can also be a highly desirable turfgrass species. As the Latin name annua implies, the species is thought to persist via an annual life cycle; yet there are many reports in literature of P. annua persisting perennially. Considering that P. annua senescence patterns do not align with other true annual species such as Triticum spp. and Zea mays L., we hypothesized that P. annua presents itself similarly to other perennial, cool-season, turfgrass species that are subject to a confluence of environmental factors in summer that can cause mortality. …

Evaluation Of Cotton Management Decisions: Cover Crops, Weed Control, And Injured Stands, Savana D. Denton May 2022

Evaluation Of Cotton Management Decisions: Cover Crops, Weed Control, And Injured Stands, Savana D. Denton

Doctoral Dissertations

Herbicide-resistant weed species have altered the challenges faced by Tennessee cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, L.) producers. While the weed control and environmental benefits of cover crops have been well-documented, the integration of cover crops into cotton production systems has presented management challenges. In-season broadcast postemergence weed control options are limited in cotton. Furthermore, off-target movement of 2,4-D and dicamba can result in additional management challenges if susceptible cotton is injured. Studies were conducted from 2018 to 2021 to evaluate: 1) cotton response to cover crop termination timings and methods; 2) postemergence weed control programs in cotton without the use of …

Effect Of Herbicide Concentration On Atrazine, Pyroxasulfone, And Saflufenacil Dissipation Under Field And Lab Conditions, Randall Lee Landry May 2022

Effect Of Herbicide Concentration On Atrazine, Pyroxasulfone, And Saflufenacil Dissipation Under Field And Lab Conditions, Randall Lee Landry

Doctoral Dissertations

Widespread herbicide resistant weeds over the last several years have fueled a renewed interest in the utility of soil-applied residual herbicides. Residual activity of a herbicide is based on a myriad of factors within and among environments. A common assumption used in simulation models examining herbicide persistence is that herbicide degradation is independent of application rate. These studies compared herbicide concentration on dissipation with three commonly used residual herbicides under field and lab conditions. Atrazine, pyroxasulfone, and saflufenacil represent herbicides with a relative field persistence of medium, high, and low, respectively. Field studies were conducted over two years where herbicides …

A Bioassay To Determine Poa Annua Responses To Indaziflam, Benjamin D. Pritchard May 2022

A Bioassay To Determine Poa Annua Responses To Indaziflam, Benjamin D. Pritchard

Masters Theses

Herbicide resistance within Poa annua is widespread in managed turfgrass systems. In 2020, a P. annua collection from a golf course in the southeastern United States was reported to be resistant to indaziflam as well as six other mode-of-action groups. Considering P. annua is the most troublesome weed in turfgrass, a bioassay to screen other collections with putative indaziflam resistance is needed. A dose-response experiment was conducted with ten concentrations of indaziflam (0, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 2000, 4500, and 9000 pM) in Gelrite® culture during 2021 and 2022. An herbicide-susceptible (S1) collection of P. annua, a …

Relative Soybean Response To Aminocyclopyrachlor, 2,4-D, Dicamba, And Aminopyralid, Trey I. Clark

Masters Theses

This research compared the visual symptomology of four auxin herbicides applied at three rates to simulate tank contamination on non-auxin tolerant soybeans. The herbicides examined were aminocyclopyrachlor (ACP), 2,4-D, dicamba, and aminopyralid. The standard labeled rates (SLR) used to base the application rates were 0.12 kg ae ha-1 for ACP and aminopyralid while dicamba and 2,4-D used 1.12 kg ae ha-1. These four herbicides exhibit similar symptoms on soybeans which is problematic when diagnosing soybean response. One goal of this project was to obtain high-quality images of the four herbicide’s effect on soybeans, with the hope of …

Characterization And Management Of Glyphosate-Resistant Junglerice, Clay M. Perkins May 2021

Characterization And Management Of Glyphosate-Resistant Junglerice, Clay M. Perkins

Doctoral Dissertations

Junglerice has become a major weed in Tennessee and across the mid-south. Glyphosate resistance and dicamba antagonism has resulted in the reported control failures and rise in prevalence. Junglerice was the most prevalent weed escape in cotton and soybean fields across Tennessee from 2018 to 2020. In all, 13% of the junglerice accessions could no longer be effectively controlled with glyphosate. Due to poor in-crop control, it has been recommended to start clean when trying to control junglerice and other grasses. Therefore, research was conducted to determine the best burndown methods utilizing dicamba, glufosinate, or paraquat. A sequential application of …

Response Of Glyphosate Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus Palmeri) To Protoporphyrinogen Oxidase Inhibiting Herbicides In Tennessee, Alinna Marie Umphres

Doctoral Dissertations

In many agronomic cropping systems across the United States, Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) is the most economic and troublesome weed for producers. The introduction of glyphosate resistant (GR) crops gave producers the benefit of controlling Palmer amaranth as well as other weeds, a broad window of application, and reduced tillage practices. With the confirmation of GR Palmer amaranth, producers implemented protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO or Protox)-inhibiting herbicides to control these populations in crops such as soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and cotton [Gossypium hirsutum (L.)]. However the continuous use of PPO herbicides has caused a shift in …

Scope And Influence Of Enhanced Triazine Degradation In U.S. Soils, Ethan Trent Parker May 2017

Scope And Influence Of Enhanced Triazine Degradation In U.S. Soils, Ethan Trent Parker

Doctoral Dissertations

The triazines are one of the most widely used herbicide classes ever developed, and play a role in managing herbicide-resistant weed populations in sustainable agricultural production systems. The triazines are traditionally valued for their persistence and season-long weed control in over 50 crops including corn, soybeans, wheat, and vegetables. The literature suggests that atrazine, the most widely used triazine, may no longer remain persistent in soils due to enhanced microbial degradation. Experiments examined the rate of degradation of atrazine and two other triazine herbicides: simazine and metribuzin in both atrazine adapted and non-adapted soils from across the United States. Additional …

Evaluation Of Off-Type Grasses In Interspecific Hybrid Bermudagrass [Cynodon Dactylon (L.) Pers. X C. Transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] Putting Greens, Eric Hall Reasor

Doctoral Dissertations

The economic impact of the golf industry in the United States (U.S.) in 2011 was estimated to be $176.8 billion. Interspecific hybrid bermudagrasses [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] are some of the most widely utilized grasses on golf courses throughout tropical, subtropical, and temperate climates. In 2007, bermudagrass was grown on 80% of putting green acreage in the southern U.S. ‘Tifgreen’ and ‘Tifdwarf’ were two of the first widely established cultivars on putting greens, but their genetic instability led to the occurrence of phenotypically different off-type (OT) grasses. Several OT grasses were selected and released as …

Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation: Meta-Analysis And Optimization Of Amendment Carbon Rate And C:N Ratio To Control Key Plant Pathogens And Weeds, Utsala Shrestha

Doctoral Dissertations

Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is an environmentally friendly and cost effective pre-plant soil treatment technique that allows effective control of soilborne pests by creating anaerobic conditions, particularly for specialty and organic crop production under diverse environmental conditions. In spite of being a proven technique, ASD has to be optimized to fit into local production systems with specific pathogen pressure using locally available amendments for successful implementation on a commercial scale. Our meta-analysis study on soilborne pathogens, plant parasitic nematodes, and weeds validated that ASD is an effective approach to control various soilborne pathogens. This study aims to optimize the carbon …

Potential Interaction Between Pre- And Post-Emergence Herbicides And The Efficacy Of Insecticide And Fungicide Seed Treatments In Cotton, Cory Joseph Vineyard Dec 2015

Potential Interaction Between Pre- And Post-Emergence Herbicides And The Efficacy Of Insecticide And Fungicide Seed Treatments In Cotton, Cory Joseph Vineyard

Masters Theses

An apparent reduction in the performance of neonicotinoid seed treatments in controlling thrips, especially in cotton, has been observed, which has coincided with the increased use of both pre- and post-emergence herbicides to control glyphosate-resistant weeds. The objective of this research was to evaluate the potential interactions of both pre- and post-emergence herbicides on the efficacy of insecticide and fungicide seed treatments in cotton

Aldicarb along with imidacloprid and thiamethoxam seed treatments reduced thrips numbers compared with non-treated seed. However, thiamethoxam did not provide effective control. Some pre-emergence herbicide treatments reduced plant health. While there was evidence that thrips injury …

Confirming Resistance To Prodiamine And Glyphosate In A Single Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua L.) Biotype From Tennessee, Shane Matthew Breeden Dec 2015

Confirming Resistance To Prodiamine And Glyphosate In A Single Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua L.) Biotype From Tennessee, Shane Matthew Breeden

Masters Theses

Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.; POAAN) is a cool-season weed that commonly infests warm-season turfgrasses during winter dormancy. In spring 2012, poor POAAN control (<50%) was reported on golf course roughs in Alcoa, TN (35.75 °N, -83.88 °W) following treatment with a tank mixture of prodiamine (1120 g ha-1[hectare]) and glyphosate (840 g ae ha-1) during bermudagrass dormancy. The objective of this research was to determine if this POAAN biotype was resistant to prodiamine and glyphosate.

Using mature plants from the field, 81 of the 100 selections were not controlled by glyphosate and prodiamine; 96 of the 100 selections were not controlled by glyphosate, while 84 were unaffected by prodiamine. Only a single plant sampled was susceptible to both herbicides. …

Influence Of Aminocyclopyrachlor Plus Metsulfuron On Seedhead Development And Forage Quality In Tall Fescue, Trevor Davis Israel

Doctoral Dissertations

This research quantified the level of seedhead suppression, injury, total ergot alkaloid changes, and forage quality changes in endophyte-infected tall fescue resulting from spring applications of aminocyclopyrachlor (ACP) plus metsulfuron (MET). Results indicated that ACP plus MET reduced tall fescue seedhead density 53 to 55% but also reduced yield 39 to 51% at spring harvest. ACP plus MET also reduced total ergot alkaloid concentration 28 to 34% and improved crude protein (CP) and relative forage quality (RFQ).

This research also determined the impact of ACP plus MET application timing and rate on tall fescue injury and weed control. Spring and …

Integration And Management Of Winter-Annual Cover Crops And Herbicides To Control Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus Palmeri S. Wats), Matthew Scott Wiggins Dec 2014

Integration And Management Of Winter-Annual Cover Crops And Herbicides To Control Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus Palmeri S. Wats), Matthew Scott Wiggins

Doctoral Dissertations

The main objective of this research was to evaluate the integration of high residue winter-annual cover crops with herbicides, both preemergence and postemergence, to control glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth. The results of these trials indicated that winter-annual cover crops improved early-season weed suppression. However, cover crops alone or as part of an integrated weed management system including only preemergence or only postemergence herbicides was not sufficient to control of glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth. Therefore, winter-annual cover crops should be used in conjunction with existing weed control tactics to achieve adequate glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth control, where applicable.

Alternative Strategies For Weed Control In Creeping Bentgrass, Matthew Thomas Elmore Aug 2014

Alternative Strategies For Weed Control In Creeping Bentgrass, Matthew Thomas Elmore

Doctoral Dissertations

Creeping bentgrass (CBG) (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is the most widely used cool-season turfgrass species on golf course fairways and tees in the United States, but it is tolerant of few post-emergence herbicides. Commercial herbicide development is currently focused on providing superintendents with herbicides that pose minimal environmental impact and can be used effectively at lower application rates than older alternatives. However, few of these products are safe for use on CBG. Several projects were conducted to evaluate alternative strategies to increase CBG herbicide tolerance.

Plants naturally contain enzymatic systems that metabolize xenobiotics. The interspecies variability in these enzymes is …

Aminocyclopyrachlor Efficacy For Non-Cropland Weed Control, José Javier Vargas Almodóvar

Masters Theses

The production of chemicals for crop protection purposes evolved after World War II with the commercialization of the auxin herbicides 2,4-D and MCPA. Their utility and effectiveness created an interest for North American and European companies to develop and research thousands of agrochemicals available today.

Recently discovered and introduced to the market by DuPont Crop Protection, aminocyclopyrachlor is the first broad spectrum synthetic auxin herbicide in this chemical class, and is structurally similar to the auxin herbicides: aminopyralid, clopyralid and picloram. Aminocyclopyrachlor has activity on broadleaf weed species with limited activity on monocot species. Aminocyclopyrachlor is absorbed via plant roots …
