Poor maternal nutrition during gestation negatively impacts fetal programming and the development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis in the offspring. Reproductive health of ewes can be characterized by concentrations of reproductive hormones including follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and progesterone, particularly during the estrous cycle. We hypothesized that ewes born to dams that experienced poor maternal nutrition during gestation would have reduced reproductive capability and efficiency. This means that they would take longer to become pregnant and have reduced concentrations of reproductive hormones compared with those born to mothers fed the control diet. Objective: The objective of the research was to evaluate the effects of increasing dietary Zn sulfate concentration for primiparous gestating ewes on subsequent milk SCC, intramammary microbial identifications, and fatty acid composition.

Surgical destabilization of the stifle joint via cranial cruciate ligament desmotomy (CCLD) is a routine procedure for the study of osteoarthritis (OA). Traditionally performed in rats, rabbits, cats, and dogs, CCLD in sheep provides an opportunity to study the pathology and treatment of joint instability in a species whose stifle better represents the equivalent human femorotibial joint. The surgical approaches for CCLD in sheep are variable and can result in inconsistent outcomes. Eight sheep underwent CCLD for use in a gene therapy study. Maternal over- and under-nutrition have negative effects on the growth and development of offspring. Colostrum and milk are critical to neonatal development, and composition and quality of colostrum and milk may be influenced by maternal factors, including diet. In this study, 46 pregnant ewes received one of three diets, 60% (RES), 100% (CON), or 140% (OVER) of National Research Council (NRC) nutrition requirements for total digestible nutrients from d 30 of gestation until parturition. Insulin-like growth factors (IGF) modulate placental and fetal growth and development through nutrient sensing and endocrine signaling. We hypothesized that poor maternal nutrition during gestation would alter IGF-I, IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-2, and IGFBP-3 mRNA expression in the ovine placenta, but would not affect IGF-II mRNA expression. Pregnant ewes (n=57) were individually fed: 60% (restricted fed; RES), 100% (control fed; CON), or 140% (over fed; OVER) of National Research Council requirements for TDN starting at day 30±0.2 of gestation. Ewes were euthanized and cotyledon and caruncle samples were collected at days 45, 90, and 135 of gestation. Relative mRNA expression …

A Pilot Study Of Sheep Disease Surveillance In Western Australia, Roy Butler

A pilot study of sheep disease surveillance was conducted in 2014-2015 on four farms in the eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia. The participants observed their sheep, sufficiently closely to notice disease, at least every second day. Most of the disease syndrome reports related to fewer than five sheep, demonstrating that farmers noticed problems in individual sheep, and not only in groups of sheep. Of a total of 66 disease syndrome observations reported over 12 months, the three most frequently occurring syndromes were found dead + sudden death (combined), skin lesions, and lameness.

Seasonal weight loss (SWL) is a serious constraint to ruminant production in tropical and Mediterranean climates. SWL is controlled using supplementation, costly and difficult to implement in extensive production systems; or alternatively, using breeds with a natural adaptation to tropical climates, namely hair and fat tailed sheep. Albeit a 15-year presence in Australia, little is known on how Dorper and Damara sheep compared to the most widely used sheep breed in Australia, the Australian Merino. The national sheep flock is a mere 40% of the size it was at its peak in the early 1990s. Some would say that it is on the verge of losing its critical mass for survival into the future. Others would see it already as a niche market industry, especially in regards to wool.

Farmers in a recent survey gave two key reasons for either quitting sheep or reducing the flock size: “sheep do not pay” or “the work involved in sheep is unacceptable”. We believe that sheep do pay — and they don’t have to be hard work.

This 3-year study evaluated the effect ofglycerin supplementation on ewe reproductive efficiency,blood glucose and insulin concentrations. Mature Polypayand Rambouillet ewes (n = 225) were orally dosed withglycerin following estrus synchronization at rates of 0, 50,100, 200 or 300 g/hd. In year 3 an additional 16 ewes weresupplemented (SUP) with 0.57 kg of range cake for 21 daysprior to breeding. Blood samples were collected (n = 25ewes) for 10 hours post drenching. Key components of the lifetimewool evaluation plan were two National producer surveys to quantify change in the knowledge, attitudes, skills and aspirations over the duration of the project. In 2005, 2032 wool producers were surveyed to establish a benchmark for ewe and pasture management practices, knowledge and willingness to change. At that time, 93% of those who were surveyed said that they were willing to be resurveyed in 2008 at the completion of the project.
