Sixteen pens were used resulting in 8 replicate pens per treatment. Wethers were fed a finishing diet consisting of cracked corn, soybean meal and soybean hulls ad libitum for 59 d. Lambs had access to clean water …

Alternative Treatment Options For Controlling Anthelmintic-Resistant Haemonchus Contortus Populations In South Dakota Sheep Herds, Adam Sarah Jan 2019

Alternative Treatment Options For Controlling Anthelmintic-Resistant Haemonchus Contortus Populations In South Dakota Sheep Herds, Adam Sarah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Haemonchus contortus is a common economically important gastrointestinal nematode that obliges the survival and productivity of small ruminants, especially sheep and goats. Anthelmintic resistance is a primary challenge in ruminant health management programs in preventing and controlling the H. contortus populations; therefore, there is a great necessity in finding and developing natural plant products for use as alternatives to commercial anthelmintics for controlling H. contortus in pastured sheep and goats. This dissertation has three major aims conducted in three separate studies: the first in vivo one was to evaluate the extended effect of a springtime, combined-treatment with 3 anthelmintics having …

Estimating survival and documenting causes and timing of mortality events in neonate bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) improves understanding of population ecology and factors influencing recruitment. During 2010–2012, we captured and radiocollared 74 neonates in the Black Hills, South Dakota, of which 95% (70) died before 52 weeks of age. Pneumonia (36%) was the leading cause of mortality followed by predation (30%). We used known fate analysis in Program MARK to estimate weekly survival rates and investigate the influence of intrinsic variables on 52-week survival. Model {S1 wk, 2–8 wks, .8 wks} had the lowest AICc (Akaike’s Information Criterion corrected for …

Effects Of Increasing The Dietary Energy Density By Replacing Grass Hay With Soybean Hulls And Dried Distillers Grains With Solubles On Nutrient Digestibility And Rumen Fermentation, Aimee Wertz-Lutz, Robert Zelinsky, Jeffrey Held

South Dakota Sheep Research Reports, 2006-07

We hypothesize that soybean hulls (SH) and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) can be used in lamb diets to increase dietary energy density compared with a traditional grass hay (GH) and soybean meal (SBM) diet without causing adverse effects on nutrient digestibility and rumen function. To test this hypothesis, four ruminally-cannulated wethers were used in a 4x4 Latin square design to determine the effects of replacing GH with SH and replacing SBM with DDGS on nutrient digestibility and rumen fermentation. All diets were formulated to contain 60% roughage and 40% concentrate on DM basis. Dietary roughage source, however, varied …

Diets were formulated to meet or exceed NRC requirements. The diets were corn or soybean hull based and DDGS served as the protein supplement in both diets. No treatment differences were observed in …

Testing Intervention Strategies To Reduce The Prevalence Of Lung Lesions In Lambs, Jay A. Daniel, Jeff E. Held Jan 2006

Testing Intervention Strategies To Reduce The Prevalence Of Lung Lesions In Lambs, Jay A. Daniel, Jeff E. Held

South Dakota Sheep Research Reports, 2006-07

We have previously demonstrated that lung lesions decrease average daily gain in lambs. We have also observed fall born lambs have a lower prevalence of lung lesions than spring born lambs. The different prevalence in lung lesions between spring and fall born lambs suggests that lung lesions can be prevented. Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica and/or Pasteurella multocida are present in lambs with moderate or severe lung lesions, but not in lambs with normal lung tissue. In serial slaughter studies, we observed lung lesions formed post-weaning. Therefore, we designed two studies to test possible intervention strategies to reduce the prevalence or severity …

Studies On Beneficial And Adverse Effects Of Dietary Buffers For Lambs, Jong Kyu Ha Jan 1981

Studies On Beneficial And Adverse Effects Of Dietary Buffers For Lambs, Jong Kyu Ha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experiments using lambs were conducted to study the effects of buffers or roughages against acidosis occurring during rapid dietary changes. Experiments using rats were conducted to investigate vitamin A and thiamin stability and/or utilization as influenced by bentonite. Incubating rumen fluid in vitro at a pH lower than 6 reduced volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and increased lactate accumulation. Limestone or bentonite at levels of 2% in 92% concentrate diets had little effect on feed intake or rumen and blood parameters during a 7-day treatment period using rumen-canulated sheep. However, 2% NaHCO3 increased rumen pH and feed intake on …

Flumethasone Induction Of Parturition In The Ewe, Donald H. Rommereim Jan 1978

Flumethasone Induction Of Parturition In The Ewe, Donald H. Rommereim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The idea of controlling the time of parturition in domestic mammals has arisen in the last 15 years from the development of techniques of estrous synchronization and from studies achieved on the mechanism of birth. Controlling the time of parturition is a management technique by which a producer might reduce livestock losses at birth and/or cut production costs. Birth for the new-born, or parturition for the mother is a critical time. Controlling the time of parturition allows the producer to exercise a constrained supervision at this critical time, and therefore limit possible losses. Being present at birth allows the producer: …

Pregnancy Diagnosis In The Ewe, Michael J. Trapp Jan 1978

Pregnancy Diagnosis In The Ewe, Michael J. Trapp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to diagnose pregnancy accurately, rapidly and economically before the last six weeks of gestation in the ewe could be of real value as a sheep management tool. An efficient non-surgical pregnancy test could enable the producer to reduce feed costs, increase percent lamb crop and select for fertility. It is important to the health of the ewe and to the survival of the lamb that highly productive animals should be adequately fed. About 75% of the fetus' growth occurs during the last trimester of pregnancy. Therefore undernutrition of the ewe during this part of pregnancy leads to the …

The Apparent Digestibility By Sheep Of Prairie Hay Harvested At Three Stages Of Maturity, Robert Manseau Jordan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Grass is the greatest asset of the Northern Great Plains. Grass does and must serve as the basic feed for the flocks and herds of this area. Without grass, much of the Northern Great Plains would be waste land with little or no value. In the states of North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, about 67 per cent of the total land is in pasture and hay. Seventy five to 95 per cent of the total feed needed by cattle and sheep in the Northern Plains states is furnished by pasture and roughage. With an ever-increasing demand …
