Cytogenetic Studies Of Cercocarpus In Utah, Grant Lloyd Pyrah Sep 1964

Cytogenetic Studies Of Cercocarpus In Utah, Grant Lloyd Pyrah

Theses and Dissertations

Within the genus Cercocarpus H.B.K., commonly called mountain mahogany, there are three species, C. monanus Raf., C. ledifolius Nutt., and C. intricatus S. Wats., that occupy rather distinct habitats in Utah. During the past two years a study of Cercocarpus populations growing throughout Utah has shown not only that hybridization does occur between all three species but that in some instances viable progeny are produced from these F1 hybrids. Despite rather severe isolation barriers, there is sufficient plasticity to permit inter-breeding under certain circumstances.

A Study Of Albinism, And Some Mating Reactions In Psilocybe Mutans, Henry L. Curtis Aug 1964

A Study Of Albinism, And Some Mating Reactions In Psilocybe Mutans, Henry L. Curtis

Theses and Dissertations

In recent taxonomic works albinism is not generally recognized as being present in the Agaricales. This study was made to find how albinism was inherited in Psilocybe mutans McKnight. Cultures of P. mutans were incubated in a constant temperature room at 20-22°C. With artificial lighting at 150 foot candles for 16 hours per day and on a laboratory bench at a comparable temperature with diffuse natural light of a lesser intensity. Numerous fruit-bodies were obtained from cultures which grew on substrates containing hot water extracts of rabbit fecal pellets and from cultures grown on substates containing no fecal extracts. A Study Of Growth Rates In Seedlings Of Douglas Fir Ecotypes, Herbert D. Papenfuss May 1964

A Study Of Growth Rates In Seedlings Of Douglas Fir Ecotypes, Herbert D. Papenfuss

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to find out if ecological races with different growth rates existed in douglas fir. Seeds were collected from six areas by the Forest Service and the author. A study was made of stem and tap root growth utilizing three photoperiods of varying length. Rate of tap root growth was significant for ecotype suggesting selection for tap root length in the plants from utah and Arizona. Each geographical area represents a growth rate ecotype with a wide break in the data on stem growth.

Changes In The Vegetation Of Two Restricted Areas Of The Wasatch Plateau As Related To Reduced Grazing And Complete Protection, Hyrum B. Johnson Jan 1964

Changes In The Vegetation Of Two Restricted Areas Of The Wasatch Plateau As Related To Reduced Grazing And Complete Protection, Hyrum B. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

An understanding of the interactions betnen vegetation and livestock grazing is of paramount importance to the welfare of the livestock industry. It is also important to know how these interactions affect the balance of the ecosystem. In general, observations of changes in vegetation provide an index for evaluating such interactions. Vegetation change is the main object of consideration in this paper. The study is concerned with some of the oldest pemanent native vegetation study plots in the Western United States. They are located on Horseshoe Flats of the Wasatch Plateau in Central Utah.
