Grain sorghum is an important crop in cropping systems worldwide. Many different genetic lines are tolerant to post-flowering heat and drought stress because they express the “stay-green” trait which causes a delay in senescence patterns. Traditional methods of senescence identification are labor-intensive and time consuming. However, remote sensing is a proposed method of identifying sorghum senescence. A study using small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) as a remote sensing platform was conducted in Concordia, KS. Twenty sorghum varieties with 3 replications were sown in a random­ized block design. During the past several years, applying fungicide to wheat has become a more common practice. The availability of cost-effective generic fungicides, as well as the positive yield responses often reported, seem to be the potential drivers for the adoption of such practices by producers. We conducted a wheat fungicide trial in Garden City, KS, to answer the following questions: 1) Do fungicide applications pay? Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Detect Turfgrass Drought, D. Bremer, Deon Van Der Merwe

Kansas State University is evaluating the ability of using small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to detect drought stress in turfgrass. Their research indicates high resolution remote sensing with small UAS can detect drought stress before it is visible to the human eye. Preliminary measurements of a golf course revealed interesting differences in fairways, tees, and greens between summer and fall seasons. Additional research will be conducted in 2016.
