High-Density Lipoprotein Antioxidant Responses To High-Intensity Interval And Steady-State Moderate-Intensity Exercise, Zacharias Papadakis, Jeffrey S. Forsse, Annie A. Bane, Taylor Kyle, Li Qian, Flor Elisa Morales Marroquín, Peter W. Grandjean

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) may impart health benefits beyond what is acquired through moderate-intensity steady state exercise (SSE). Paraoxonase 1 (PON1), an antioxidant associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL), may be altered with exercise; however, it is unclear whether HIIE provides a greater stimulus for increasing PON1 antioxidant activity than a comparable or greater amount of SSE. PURPOSE: Determine the influence of HIIE on PON1 concentration and activity relative to a comparable amount of moderate-intensity SSE and a dose that is half that of SSE. METHODS: Seventeen male participants (age 27.8 + 6.4 yr; weight 80.6 + 9.0 kg; BMI 25.1 …

Effects Of Fish Oil Supplementation On Post-Resistance Exercise Muscle Soreness In Untrained Females, Grant M. Tinsley, Joshua J. Gann, Stefan R. Huber, Paul M. La Bounty, Rodney G. Bowden, Thomas L. Andre, Paul M. Gordon, Peter W. Grandjean

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil may help alleviate symptoms of delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) and improve recovery from exercise.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of fish oil supplementation on the time-course of post-resistance exercise muscle soreness in young untrained females.

METHODS: Seventeen non-resistance trained females (age 23.6 ± 3.0 y, % fat 27.4 ± 3.2, weight 60.2 ± 9.6 kg) were randomized into one of two groups: fish oil (6 g/d; 5:1 EPA:DHA) or placebo (6 g/d corn/soy oil). After consuming the supplements for one week, participants underwent a single bout of …

Pre-Prandial Vinegar Ingestion Improves Two-Hour Glucose Control In Older, Type Ii Diabetics More Than Post-Prandial Walking, Sarah J. Taylor, Matthew J. Garver, Anna E. Ciufo, Taylor G. Flowers, Chase M. Harbach, Austin A. Ray, Cory M. Scheadler Feb 2015

Pre-Prandial Vinegar Ingestion Improves Two-Hour Glucose Control In Older, Type Ii Diabetics More Than Post-Prandial Walking, Sarah J. Taylor, Matthew J. Garver, Anna E. Ciufo, Taylor G. Flowers, Chase M. Harbach, Austin A. Ray, Cory M. Scheadler

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Background: Exercise engagement benefits diabetic patients through an insulin-like effect on muscle. Literature indicates that vinegar consumption may lower blood glucose levels. It is not currently clarified whether a relative amount of vinegar ingestion or a walking bout is more effective at controlling glucose in older, Type II diabetics during the acute phase following a meal. Purpose: The aim was to directly compare the impact of preferred-pace walking (15 min, postprandial) versus ingestion of a relative quantity of vinegar (0.3 g/kg) on two-hour glucose control. Methods: The two arms of the trial were completed in a randomized, …

Nutritional, Bone, And Physical Fitness States Of Jockeys In Chronic Repetition Of Short-Term Weight Loss, Soeun Jeon, Kyungho Cho, Gina Ok, Hyon Park

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Professional jockeys are required to fit their weight, mainly weight loss, for two game days every weekend during racing season which usually lasts 10 months a year in Korea. The repetitive routine weight loss protocol is performed for 4 to 5 days a week include two game days. This situation would have brought some negative effects on the professional jockeys' overall health and physical condition with the relation of their performance. The purpose of the present study was: 1) to examine the weight loss habits of pro-jockeys, and 2) effects of chronic short-term weight loss on nutritional status, bone health, …

C.Elegans As A Diabetes & Ischemia Model: Identification Of Genetic And Cellular Changes That Modulate The Survival Of Hyperglycemia And Oxygen-Deprivation, Anastacia M. Garcia, Mary L. Ladage, Brian K. Mcfarlin, Rajeev K. Azad, Pamela A. Padilla

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Diet represents an exogenous influence that often yields colossal effects on an individual’s phenotype, physiology, long-term health and disease risk. The overconsumption of dietary sugars for example, has contributed to significant increases in obesity and type 2 diabetes, health issues that are costly both in terms of dollars and human life. Additionally, individuals with these conditions have compromised oxygen delivery and thus, an increased vulnerability to other oxygen-deprivation related disease states, including cardiovascular disease, ischemic strokes, vascular and coronary diseases and myocardial infarction. While human and other mammalian studies have shown that individuals with type 2 diabetes have a worse …

Consumption Of A High-Fat Meal Alters Post-Prandial Sirt Mrna Expression In Blood Leukocytes, Jill N. Sampson, Andrea L. Henning, Eric A. Prado, Adam Venable, Pamela Padilla, Brian K. Mcfarlin Feb 2015

Consumption Of A High-Fat Meal Alters Post-Prandial Sirt Mrna Expression In Blood Leukocytes, Jill N. Sampson, Andrea L. Henning, Eric A. Prado, Adam Venable, Pamela Padilla, Brian K. Mcfarlin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Introduction. Sirtuins (SIRT) are protein deacetylases, hypothesized to regulate the transcription of various genes involved in the prevention of atherogenesis and diet induced obesity. Previous research from our laboratory has demonstrated that consumption of a single, high-fat meal increases various CVD risk factors for up to 5-h post-prandial. Given the importance of SIRT to metabolic disorders, it is reasonable to speculate that a single, high-fat meal also disrupts SIRT. Methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a high-fat meal (75% of daily kcals & 80% of daily fat needs), on SIRT mRNA expression in blood …

Effects Of Nutrition Education On Dietary Intake Quality And Nutrition Knowledge In Professional Soccer Players – A Pilot Study, Brittany Wise, Randahl Capurro, Donovan Fogt

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Background and Aims: Nutrition is an important factor for optimal performance of professional athletes. Several studies have demonstrated that elite athletes, especially soccer players, don’t eat enough or a high quality diet. Research shows that a diet with 65-70% of calories from carbohydrates, 20-35% calories from fat and approximately 12% of calories from protein out of an approximate 5,000 kcal diet will show improvements in performance of athletes training at high intensities. This pilot study aimed to test the impact of a targeted nutrition education program on dietary intake quality and nutrition knowledge in professional soccer players.

Methods: We initially …
