Phleborheography: A Correlative Study With Venography, Joseph P. Elliott Jr., John H. Hageman, Ann C. Belanger, Roger F. Smith
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The Vascular Laboratory of Henry Ford Hospital has used the Cranley-Grass Phleborheograph (PRG) as the primary noninvasive method to determine the presence or absence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in the lower limbs since December 1977. In order to determine its proper role and clinical reliability, we compared the diagnostic accuracy of phleborheography with contrast venography. From December 1977 through December 1978, 483 cases (963 limbs) were successfully examined by PRG. Ofthese, 111 cases (216 limbs) also had contrast venography. The PRG was confirmed as normal in 151 out of 157 (6 false negatives). There were 53 abnormal PRCs, with …

Glucose Phosphate Isomerase Deficiency: Unusual Acute Hemolytic Crisis In A Middle-Aged Woman, Koichi Maeda, Sheikh M. Saeed, Raymond W. Monto, Ernest Beutler
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Hereditary hemolytic anemia associated with glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency was first reported in 1967. Since then, about 30 cases have been reported in the literature; their ages ranged between 1 and 26 years. We present a case of glucose phosphate isomerase deficiency in a 56-year-old woman. Steroid therapy seemed to resolve our patient's acute stage. Since it has not been mentioned previously, further evaluation is necessary. Consideration of this deficiency may be helpful in investigating hemolytic anemia, regardless of the patient's age.
Intensity Of The Second Heart Sound: Relation Of Physical, Physiological And Anatomic Factors To Auscultatory Evaluation, Paul D. Stein, Hani Sabbah
Intensity Of The Second Heart Sound: Relation Of Physical, Physiological And Anatomic Factors To Auscultatory Evaluation, Paul D. Stein, Hani Sabbah
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The intensity of the heart sound depends upon: 1) the distensibility of the aortic and pulmonary valves; 2) hemodynamic factors that cause the valves to distend and vibrate; 3) viscosity of the blood and its ability to inhibit diastolic valve motion; 4) the configuration of the aorta, pulmonary artery, and ventricle and the ability of the walls of the great vessels and ventricles to absorb or reflect sound energy; and 5) the capability of sound to be transmitted to the chest wall. Recognizing how these physical, physiological, and anatomic factors interact can help us to interpret auscultation of the intensity …
A Selective Approach To Bleeding Esophageal Varices, Glyn G. Jamieson, Irwin B. Faris, John Ludbrook
A Selective Approach To Bleeding Esophageal Varices, Glyn G. Jamieson, Irwin B. Faris, John Ludbrook
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
It is possible that the best results of treatment for bleeding esophageal varices will come when a selective approach is used. In patients bleeding acutely and in patients with poor liver function shunt operations should be avoided, and a direct attack on the varices with either sclerosant therapy, percutaneous obliteration, or staple gun gastro-esophageal transsection should be carried out. In patients who have stopped bleeding, or those in whom elective treatment is being undertaken, the best operation at present appears to be selective distal splenorenal shunt.
A Technique For Physiologically Age-Grading Female Stable Flies, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.), P. J. Scholl
A Technique For Physiologically Age-Grading Female Stable Flies, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.), P. J. Scholl
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
A method of dissection followed by staining was initiated to allow physiological age- grading based on ovarian development in order to more completely describe the physiological development of adult female stable flies [Stomoxys calcitrans (L. )]. The gonotrophic developmental continuum from a non-differentiated cell in teneral females to mature eggs at the time of oviposition was first arbitrarily divided into six stages by using distinct landmarks within the developing oocyte . Then, nulliparous, uniparous, and biparous+ females were differentiated on the basis of the presence or absence of stained follicular relics in the ovariole sheaths. The combination of the …

Today, on many fronts, there is renewed interest in our relationship with nonhuman animals. Many factors have contributed to this concern. Environmental and ecological awareness has drawn public attention to the near extermination of many species and the detrimental effects of pollution, pesticides, and habitat destruction. The inefficiency of transmuting vegetable protein to meat has added to the traditional moral arguments of vegetarians. The widespread questioning of government support for basic research has been intertwined with suspicions about the use and worth of any studies on animals, even those purporting to help understand human medical and behavioral problems. New evidence …
Transpiration And Co2 Fixation Of Selected Desert Shrubs As Related To Soil-Water Potential, S. B. Clark, J. Letey Jr., O. R. Lunt, A. Wallace, G. E. Kleinkopf, E. M. Romney
Transpiration And Co2 Fixation Of Selected Desert Shrubs As Related To Soil-Water Potential, S. B. Clark, J. Letey Jr., O. R. Lunt, A. Wallace, G. E. Kleinkopf, E. M. Romney
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
In desert plants, transpiration rates decreased before photosynthetic rates when plants were entering a period of water stress. This may have adaptive consequences. A difference of -5 bars in the soil-moisture potential had considerable importance in reducing the rate of transpiration. In Helianthus annuus L. (sunflower) the photosynthetic rate decreased before the transpiration rate in contrast to Great Basin-Mojave Desert plants, and the changes occurred with a -1 bar difference in soil-moisture potential. Morphological changes in three desert plant species [Artemisia tridentata Nutt., Ambrosia dumosa (Gray) Payne, Larrea tridentata (Ses. Moc. ex DC) Cov.] as the soil-moisture potential decreased …

Mineral Compostition Of Atriplex Hymenelytra Growing In The Northern Mojave Desert, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney, R. B. Hunter, J. E. Kinnear, G. V. Alexander
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
Fifty samples of Atriplex hymenelytra (Torr.) S. Wats, were collected from several different locations in southern Nevada and California to test variability in mineral composition. Only Na, V, P. Ca, Mg, Mn, and Sr in the samples appeared to represent a uniform population resulting in normal curves for frequency distribution. Even so, about 40 percent of the variance for these elements was due to location. All elements differed enough with location so that no element really represented a uniform population. The coefficient of variation for most elements was over 40 percent and one was over 100 percent. The proportion of …
The Synthesis And Biochemical Evaluation Of Potential Acetylcholinesterase Reactivators, Andrea Mcdearmid Lunsford
The Synthesis And Biochemical Evaluation Of Potential Acetylcholinesterase Reactivators, Andrea Mcdearmid Lunsford
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Objectives of this research were to (1) synthesize, and (2) evaluate new compounds which would be potential reactivators of organophosphate-inhibited acetylcholinesterase.
A series of 1,8-diazafluorenone and 2,2'bipyridylketone oximes and oxime methiodides were synthesized (11, 13, 14, 22, 24). These compounds were developed as structural analogs of 2-PAM (2-Pyridinealdoxime methiodide) and TMB-4 (1,1Trimethylene-Bis(4-formylpyridinium bromide)dioxime), the current drugs of choice for treatment of organophosphorous poisoning.
Acetylcholinesterase from electric eel was inhibited with DFP (diisopropylfluorophosphate), an irreversible-type inhibitor, and the inhibited enzyme was treated with the various reactivator compounds. The reactivation assays were monitored with pH stat apparatus, and the data were evaluated …

A Light And Electron Microscopic Study Of Visual Neurons In The Medulla Externa Of The Crab Hemigrapsus Nudus, Yu Cheng Liao
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The decapod crustacean with a relatively well-defined visual system have contributed significantly to our understanding of visual neuron morphology and physiology. The general morphology of the optic lobes of several decapods were initially described by Parker (1897) and Hanstrom (1924). In the past few years, several light and electron microscope studies have been made on the lamina ganglionaris: the first optic ganglion, of the lobster (Hamori and Horridge, 1966a); the crayfish (Hafner, 1974; Nassel, 1976a), and the crab (Stowe et al., 1977; Rafuse et al., in preparation). As yet, no adequate description has been made of the visual neurons in …
Analysis Of The Potentials And Topographical Relations Between The Olfactory Bulb And Prepyriform Cortex, William S. Seibly
Analysis Of The Potentials And Topographical Relations Between The Olfactory Bulb And Prepyriform Cortex, William S. Seibly
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Olfactory bulb efferents sweep caudally over the prepyriform cortex in a broad fiber sheet called the lateral olfactory tract (LOT). The LOT begins as a compact sheet of fibers in the olfactory peduncle and narrows to a bundle caudally. It is the primary axonal pathway between the olfactory bulb and the cortex. The shape and cross-sectional area of the LOT was measured from histologic sections. The cross-sectional area diminishes to about half from rostral to caudal measurements. An array of 58 electrodes spaced at intervals of 1 mm was constructed to conform to the curvilinear surface and geometry of the …
The Effects Of 712-Dimethylbenz (A) Anthracene On Ovarian Steroidogenesis And Uterine Growth In The Mouse, Jeffrey Lynn Clark
The Effects Of 712-Dimethylbenz (A) Anthracene On Ovarian Steroidogenesis And Uterine Growth In The Mouse, Jeffrey Lynn Clark
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
It has been previously demonstrated that 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene (DMBA) is an initiator of ovarian granulosa cell tumors. It is also known that DMBA leads to destruction of primordial oocytes, and that tumor induction may involve the interaction of pituitary gonadotropins. However, the effects of DMBA on ovarian steroidogenesis and uterine growth in relation to the tumorigenic process have not been investigated. Therefore, the present study was conducted to examine these parameters using adult C57Bl/6N mice treated in proestrus and diestrus II with 0.1 ml corn oil with or without 1.5 mg DMBA and killed 44 hours later. The uteri and …
Multiple Forms Of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Glycohydrolase From Bull Semen, Stanley D. Yeatts Ii
Multiple Forms Of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Glycohydrolase From Bull Semen, Stanley D. Yeatts Ii
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide glycohydrolase (NADase) of bull semen is an extracellular, soluble enzyme capable of catalyzing the hydrolysis of the nicotinamide N-ribosidic linkage of NAD+. In search for a rapid, simple procedure for the preparation of this enzyme, it was found that Matrex Gel Red A (Amicon) column packing served very well as an affinity gel for NADase. The enzyme was applied to the Matrex Red A column (21 cm x 1.5 cm) in 10 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 6.0. Surprisingly, two fractions of NADase activity were obtained when the column was eluted with a sodium chloride …
The Analysis Of S-Adenosylmethionine And S-Adenosylhomocysteine In Normal And Neoplastic Cells, Kathryn Elizabeth Godburn
The Analysis Of S-Adenosylmethionine And S-Adenosylhomocysteine In Normal And Neoplastic Cells, Kathryn Elizabeth Godburn
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Altered patterns of methylation have been shown in both ribosomal and transfer RNA isolated from cancer cells. In contrast to the elevated activity of the methyltransferases responsible for this modification, hypomethylation appears as a general characteristic. The endogenous levels of S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine are important in relationship to their role as substrate and product of the transmethylation reaction. The levels of S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine were determined using phosphocellulose cation exchange or high pressure liquid chromatography. High voltage paper electrophoresis was used in a modified procedure to directly resolve (35s) labeled S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine in small quantities of cell …
High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoretic Study Of Human Seminal Plasma Proteins, Edward E. Gaunt
High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoretic Study Of Human Seminal Plasma Proteins, Edward E. Gaunt
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
A comprehensive biochemical screening procedure for the evaluation of seminal plasma constituents is needed which, when used in conjunction with semen analysis, can provide the physician with both qualitative and quantitative information regarding the fertility status of an individual.
High resolution two-dimensional electrophoresis is a technique whereby proteins in a complex mixture such as a biological fluid are separated in one dimension by molecular charge and in the second dimension by molecular mass. It has been the purpose of this investigation to adapt and evaluate this technique for the analysis of human seminal plasma.
Our efforts have shown that this …

We examined the epidemiology of osteoporotic fractures in Croatia and correlated the results with data from other countries. We analyzed annual rates of wrist fractures in the large urban community of Zagreb and hip fractures in the Republic of Croatia. In addition, we determined mortality data and measured metacarpal bone mass In patients with hip fractures. There were age and sex differences in the incidence of both types of fracture. The incidence of wrist fractures is the same as in some Northwestern European countries, but the incidence of hip fractures is much lower. The mortality after hip fractures is high …

Occult Cushing's Syndrome Presenting With Osteoporosis, M. Kleerekoper, Sudhaker D. Rao, B. Frame, R. D. Larocque, T. Feigelman, V. Matkovic, L. V. Avioli
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Osteoporosis is a frequent complication both of endogenous hypercortisolism and of long-term treatment with corticosteroids, but only rarely is it the major clinical feature with the more characteristic features absent or minimally present. In the two patients presented, hypercortisolism was uncovered only during routine evaluation of osteoporosis. This presentation is probably due to slow progression of the disease and is often associated with so-called black adenoma of the adrenal gland. Secondary causes should be sought in all patients with seemingly "senile" or "postmenopausal" osteoporosis.
Cushing's Disease, A Pituitary Disorder: A Hypothesis, M. Saeed Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger
Cushing's Disease, A Pituitary Disorder: A Hypothesis, M. Saeed Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
At present, Cushing's disease Is believed to be due to Inappropriate secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Associated abnormalities such as disturbed sleep pattern, growth hormone secretion, depressed thyroid hormone levels, and gonadal function are considered by some as manifestations of a generalized central nervous system disturbance, with abnormal ACTH secretion as one of the components. Recognition of microadenomata in Increasing numbers of patients with Cushing's disease, the reversal of hypothalamic abnormalities after adenomectomy, and correction of hypercortisolemia all suggest that the central nervous system disturbances result from Cortisol excess. We hypothesize that the basic abnormality in Cushing's disease is the …
