Mid‐Level Intrusions At The Continental Shelf Edge, Christopher S. Welch Nov 1981

Mid‐Level Intrusions At The Continental Shelf Edge, Christopher S. Welch

VIMS Articles

Observations across the continental shelf offshore from New Jersey in late summer 1976 show an intrusion of saline water at the mid level of the water column across the shelf edge front, which appears in density only as an offshore thickening of the pycnocline. This internal density field produces horizontal pressure gradient forces within the pycnocline in the onshore direction. These forces, in the linearized equation of motion with a constant eddy viscosity, drive a circulation which resembles a double Ekman spiral for internal pressure vertical distributions which are thin with respect to the Ekman depth. For thick pressure distributions, …

A Quantitative Description Of Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) With Applications In Fisheries Management, Anne Madolyn Babcock Oct 1981

A Quantitative Description Of Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp (Penaeus Aztecus) With Applications In Fisheries Management, Anne Madolyn Babcock

OES Theses and Dissertations

A quantitative description of the migratory behavior of the brown shrimp, Penaeus aztecus, was established using the density approach. A theoretical time density was estimated by the proportion of catch and catch per boat hour NOAA-NMFS fisheries statistics collected in Pamlico Sound, the Neuse River, and Core Sound. A clear quantitative description of brown shrimp migratory timing is found in the time densities. The impact of various physical tactors on the progress of the fishery in time and space can be objectively evaluated by using the time density statistics as dependent variables in modeling efforts. The distributions also enable …

Diclidophora Nezumiae Sp. N. (Monogenea: Diclidophoridae) And Its Ecological Relationships With The Macrourid Fish Nezumia Bairdii (Goode And Bean, 1877), Thomas A. Monroe, Ronald A. Campbell, David E. Zwerner

VIMS Articles

Diclidophora nezumiae sp. n. is described from the gills of the rat-tail fish Nezumia bairdii (Goode and Bean, 1877) taken from the environs of Hudson Submarine Canyon in the northwest Atlantic. The host-parasite relationships were studied in the host population. The new species is most similar to small species of Diclidophora having short bodies that taper to maximum width at the level of the first pair of clamps. It may be differentiated from other species by the following: clamps wider than long, noticeably decreasing in size posteriorly; lamellate extension of sclerite b does not fuse with sclerite c1; unsclerotized diaphragm; …

The Effects Of Copper On Skeletonema Costatum (Greville) Cleve, Susanne Sybille Jackman Oct 1981

The Effects Of Copper On Skeletonema Costatum (Greville) Cleve, Susanne Sybille Jackman

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Copper levels and dominant phytoplankton species composition were examined from six sites in Kings Creek on Virginia's Eastern Shore from March to August 1980. Creek copper levels were determined by an APDCMIBK extraction procedure and ranged from 0.003 to 0.020 mg/1. Diatoms were the dominant phytoplankters with Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve emerging as a major late summer species.

Subsequent laboratory studies involved 96-hour experiments using Skeletonema costatum (clone Skel) grown in enriched natural seawater. The water was collected from Kings Creek and enriched to Guillard and Ryther's (1962) f/2 media levels. Cupric sulfate was added to the experimental culture media …

The Seasonality Of Occurrence Of Larval And Juvenile Sciaenids In A Virginia Seaside Estuary, James Howard Cowan Jr. Jul 1981

The Seasonality Of Occurrence Of Larval And Juvenile Sciaenids In A Virginia Seaside Estuary, James Howard Cowan Jr.

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The seasonality of occurrence and relative abundance of larval and juvenile fishes, particularly members of the family Sciaenidae, from a Virginia seaside estuary were determined from ichthyoplankton and trawl collections made from March 1979 to March 1980.

The larvae of 20 species distributed among 15 families were identified from the ichthyoplankton. Larvae of the bay anchovy, Anchoa mitchilli, and the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, dominated the samples and made up 57 and 34%, respectively, of all larvae collected. Peak occurrence began in May and continued through August. Fish larvae were present in the study area all year.

The Present State Of Organic Xenobiotics In The Chesapeake Bay - A Synthesis Paper, R. J. Huggett, R. H. Bieri, P. O. Defur, W. G. Macintyre, P. Shou, C. L. Smith, C. W. Su

Reports

This manuscript discusses the results of the first two and one half years of a three-year study designed to determine the present state of xenobiotic compounds in the Chesapeake Bay. It shows that polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are the most frequently encountered compounds and are the most abundant. Concentrations are highest in the Northern Bay with several sources implicated. During this study an apparent dumping of the pesticide, DDT, occurred. Either the quantity disposed of was small enough or the assimulation capacity was large enough that no adverse effects were noted. The detection by us of 6-phenyldodecane in bottom sediments of …

Trophodynamics Of The Fish Valenciennellus Tripunctulatus. I. Vertical Distribution, Diet And Feeding Chronology, Thomas L. Hopkins, Ronald C. Baird

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The adult and juvenile life stages of the small (~25mm) zooplanktivorous mesopelagic fish Valenciennellus tripunctulatus (Esmark) are found at depths of 200-600m throughout the diel period. Average population density was estimated to be 5 fish (104m3)-1 and the maximum density recorded was 11 fish (104m3)-1. Copepods constituted ~95% of all food items identified and Pleuromamma was the principal forage genus, contributing 31% and 56% to numbers and biomass of food items, respectively. Ontogenetic changes in diet were observed, the percentage of larger copepods increasing in the diet with increasing fish size. Food items …

Mouthpart Morphology And Feeding Strategies Of The Commensal Amphipod, Anamixis Hanseni Stebbing, James Darwin Thomas, George W. Taylor Apr 1981

Mouthpart Morphology And Feeding Strategies Of The Commensal Amphipod, Anamixis Hanseni Stebbing, James Darwin Thomas, George W. Taylor

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The lack of the information on the biology of the commensal amphipod family Anamixidae prompted investigations into mouthpart ultrastructure, feeding biology, and host specificity of Anamixis hanseni Stebbing, 1897. Earlier investigators presented conflicting reports on the structural composition of the buccal region and feeding modes in anamixids. Scanning electron microscope analysis of A. hanseni showed a complete set of mouthparts to be present, although much modified and reduced, except for the well-developed maxilliped palps. Feeding is not parasitic (piercing and sucking host tissue) as previously believed but is accomplished while A. hanseni rests inside its host. Minute food particles are …

Growth And Recruitment Of Two Penaeids In The Bay Of St. Louis, Mississippi During 1979, Teresa C. Heaton Apr 1981

Growth And Recruitment Of Two Penaeids In The Bay Of St. Louis, Mississippi During 1979, Teresa C. Heaton

OES Theses and Dissertations

Juvenile brown (Penaeus aztecus, Ives) and white (Penaeus setiferus, Linnaeus) shrimp were collected from two stations of a nursery area in St. Louis Bay Mississippi, during May to October, 1979. Periods of shrimp recruitment and growth were determined to discern whether the concurrent environmental variables of salinity and temperature had an influence on shrimp abundance and yield. Growth estimates were obtained from length frequency measurements of trawl samples taken over a 24-h period per month from each station. An analysis of variance of length versus the variables of sex, month, station, time of day, salinity and …

Seasat Altimetry Adjustment Model Including Tidal And Other Sea Surface Effects, Georges Blaha

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

This study is a part of the on-going effort aimed at improved determinations of the earth's gravity field through the adjustment of satellite altimeter data in the short-arc mode. Until recently the key role in such adjustments has been played by GEOS-3 altimeter data. However, SEASAT altimetry is envisioned as providing a more accurate means for addressing this task.

In view of the improved quality of altimeter data and of the corresponding more stringent requirements for the data reduction, several improvements in the existing altimetry model have been designed and are described herein. For example, the criteria have been established …

Water Quality In A Small Tidal Creek: Parker Creek, Virginia, Carl F. Cerco, Albert Y. Kuo Mar 1981

Water Quality In A Small Tidal Creek: Parker Creek, Virginia, Carl F. Cerco, Albert Y. Kuo

Reports

Parker Creek is a branched tidal creek located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In its southern branch, the creek receives waste inputs from a poultry processing plant. A study has been conducted to determine the effects of these inputs and to formulate a mathematical model of the creek system suitable for water quality planning. The model and field studies show the creek may be divided into two zones, an upstream zone dominated by freshwater flows and waste inputs, and a downstream zone dominated by conditions in adjacent Metomkin Bay. In the upstream zone of the waste-receiving branch, conditions of …
