Established through the Coastal Zone Management Act, the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) represents a partnership program between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the coastal states to promote informed management of the Nation’s estuaries and habitats. Designated in 1991, and administered by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) of William & Mary, the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERR-VA or Reserve) is one of 30 protected areas, which encompass over 1.3 million acres and make up the NERRS.
As the nation's largest estuary, the Chesapeake Bay contains a diverse collection of habitats …

1. The overarching goal of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) for this project has been to enhance the Chesapeake Bay’s oyster population. In Virginia, CBF is working with partners to focus restoration efforts on the Lafayette River in order to bring the river’s biomass and reef substrate to a threshold level that will show a systemic response in terms of enhanced spatset. Portions of their grant have funded the hydrodynamic modeling of the Lafayette River recently performed and herein reported. 2. VIMS personnel have modified its existing three-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the Lafayette/Elizabeth/James Rivers to conduct larval connectivity simulations. The …

Water Quality Conditions And Restoration Of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (Sav) In The Tidal Freshwater James River 2009, Ken Moore, Betty Neikirk, Erin C. Shields, David Parrish
Reports
In 2009, wild celery (Vallisneria americana) and water stargrass (Heteranthera dubia) shoots were transplanted into shallow water sites in the Hopewell region of the tidal James River and sampled for survivorship and growth throughout the SAV growing season. Water quality sampling was conducted at bi-weekly to monthly intervals throughout the year for water column nutrients, chlorophyll a, suspended solids, water transparency and other chemical and physical constituents important for SA V growth. Objectives of this restoration and water quality study were to: 1) expand the SA V transplanted plots within the study areas previously transplanted; 2) conduct water quality sampling …

Representation Of Bed Stresses Within A Model Of Chesapeake Bay, Courtney K. Harris, J. Paul Rinehimer, Sung-Chan Kim
Reports
This project focused on numerical modeling of the Estuarine Turbidity Maximum (ETM) with the goal of improving the representation of the bottom boundary layer and turbulent mixing within the Chesapeake Bay Program’s model [see Cerco and Noel, 2004]. The effort has been part of the EPA’s sediment modeling initiative for the Chesapeake Bay, in coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC). Research activities focused on the Upper Chesapeake Bay and major tributaries in Maryland (such as the Potomac River); and assisted management of the U.S. EPA TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) project …

Estuarine Suspended Sediment Loads And Sediment Budgets In Tributaries Of Chesapeake Bay Phase 1: York, Patuxent, And Potomac Rivers, Julie Herman, Carl Friedrichs
Reports
Understanding the sources and sinks of suspended sediment in Chesapeake Bay tributaries is an important contribution to quantifying the Bay sediment budget, as well as an aid to management strategies. The purpose of the project was to identify estuarine sediment transport processes and estimate sediment loads and sediment budgets for the major tributaries of the Bay. The first phase included the York River, Va. and the Patuxent River, Md. Sediment transport processes, sediment loads, and a partial budget also were developed for the Potomac River, Md. The results of this study represent the most comprehensive calculations to date of sediment …

In 2007, wild celery (Vallisneria americana) and water stargrass (Heteranthera dubia) were planted at sites in the Hopewell region of the tidal James River. The SA V transplants from 2007 and previous years were monitoried by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) for survivorship and growth throughout the growing season. Nursery ponds were constructed at the VIMS campus for development of SA V transplant propagules. Water quality sampling was conducted at bi-weekly intervals throughout the year for water column nutrients, chlorophyll a, suspended solids, water transparency and other chemical and physical constituents important for SAV growth. Effectiveness Of The Blue Crab Spawning Sanctuary In Chesapeake Bay, Debra M. Lambert, Rom Lipcius, John M. Hoenig
Effectiveness Of The Blue Crab Spawning Sanctuary In Chesapeake Bay, Debra M. Lambert, Rom Lipcius, John M. Hoenig
Reports
The blue crab spawning stock in Chesapeake Bay sustained a severe and persistent decline beginning in 1992. As part of the effort to enhance the spawning stock, the spawning sanctuary in lower Chesapeake Bay was enlarged to over 240,000 ha. This marine reserve and corridor prohibits exploitation of mature females en route to or in the spawning grounds during the summer spawning season (1 June-15 September). To assess the effectiveness of the sanctuary, we tagged terminally molted, mature females inside and outside the sanctuary during three sanctuary seasons (2002-2004). Crabs were captured throughout the Bay and its tributaries, measured, tagged, …

Abundance, Biomass And Size Structure Of Eastern Oyster And Hooked Mussel On A Modular Artificial Reef In The Rappahannock River, Chesapeake Bay, Rom Lipcius, Russell P. Burke
Reports
Restoration efforts with native Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, in Chesapeake Bay have been extensive, and there has been a continuing search for reef structures that will be effective under a range of environmental conditions. We quantified population structure, density, abundance and biomass of Eastern oyster and hooked mussel, Ischadium recurvum, on a novel concrete modular reef deployed subtidally (~ 7 m depth) in the lower Rappahannock River during October, 2000. The reef provided 3-D architectural complexity, substrate stability, and extensive surface settlement area (nearly 75 m2 of reef surface over 5 m2 of river bottom). Upon deployment, the reef was …

Improving Siting And Construction : Criteria For Oyster Reef Restoration, Helen Woods, William J. Hargis Jr., Carl H. Hershner, Pam Mason
Reports
The Chesapeake Bay, named Chesepiooc, the “great shellfish bay,” by the Algonquin speaking native Americans of the region, was once one of the most productive oyster (Crassostrea virginica) producing estuaries in the world. With the advent of canning and the development of the railroad system, huge national and international markets were established for Chesapeake Bay oysters (United States Secretary of the Interior 1866,Wennerston 1981). From 1894 to 1912 annual oyster harvests in Virginia alone ranged from 5 to 7.5 million bushels (Hargis and Haven 1988). Shells from harvested oysters were not replaced on oyster grounds but sold for a variety …
