One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Whose Fish? Subjects: Life Science, Environmental Science, Marine / Ocean Science, Shelby White

This activity invites students to assume the role of various stakeholders in fisheries management and actively discuss the influence of economics, ecology and human interactions in decision-making.

Students will demonstrate their argument for/against a certain regulation by participating as a specific stakeholder (i.e. commercial fisher, recreational fisher, scientists/researcher, environmental group, management agency, and citizen). Students will recognize that stakeholders tend to advocate based on their individual needs, often making it difficult for proposed policies to satisfy the needs of all stakeholders and achieve sustainability goals.

For the sea scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, the concepts of space and time have emerged as the basis of an effective management tool. The strategy of closing or limiting activities in certain areas for specific lengths of time has gained support as a method to conserve and enhance the scallop resource. In the last decade, rotational area management has provided a mechanism to protect juvenile scallops from fishing mortality by closing areas based upon scallop abundance and age distribution. We conducted a gillnet survey from May through September 2014, at two locations in Charlotte Harbor, Florida: Long Point (LP) and Pine Island (PI). Elasmobranchs and teleosts were sampled using two different methodologies: 1) the same methodology as a previous survey conducted by Mote Marine Laboratory from 1995 to 2004 and in 2013; and 2) the methodology used in the NMFS-coordinated Gulf of Mexico Shark Pupping and Nursery (GULFSPAN) program. The blue crab spawning stock in Chesapeake Bay sustained a severe and persistent decline beginning in 1992. As part of the effort to enhance the spawning stock, the spawning sanctuary in lower Chesapeake Bay was enlarged to over 240,000 ha. This marine reserve and corridor prohibits exploitation of mature females en route to or in the spawning grounds during the summer spawning season (1 June-15 September). To assess the effectiveness of the sanctuary, we tagged terminally molted, mature females inside and outside the sanctuary during three sanctuary seasons (2002-2004). The Chesapeake Bay, named Chesepiooc, the “great shellfish bay,” by the Algonquin speaking native Americans of the region, was once one of the most productive oyster (Crassostrea virginica) producing estuaries in the world. With the advent of canning and the development of the railroad system, huge national and international markets were established for Chesapeake Bay oysters (United States Secretary of the Interior 1866,Wennerston 1981). From 1894 to 1912 annual oyster harvests in Virginia alone ranged from 5 to 7.5 million bushels (Hargis and Haven 1988). A moratorium on the taking of American shad (Alosa sapidissima) in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries was established by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) beginning 1 January 1994. The prohibition applied to both recreational and commercial fishers. The moratorium was imposed at a time when commercial catch rates of American shad in Virginia's rivers were experiencing declines. Data from the commercial fishery were the best available for assessing the status of individual stocks. Catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) data were compiled from logbooks that recorded landings by commercial fishermen using staked gill nets at various locations throughout the middle reaches of …

In accordance with the Rational Plan for Testing Application of Non-Native Oyster Species (VIMS 1996) we conducted a field experiment to examine survival, growth and disease susceptibility of Crassostrea ariakensis (=rivularis) in relation to salinity in Virginia. The performance of triploid C. ariakensis in comparison with that of diploid C. virginica, (n = 250, age = 2 years, mean shell height = 60- 64 mm) was evaluated at replicate sites within low, medium, and high salinity regimes (respectively, < 15‰, 15-25‰, > 25‰) in Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Coast. The crab waste problem in Virginia and Maryland has been well documented by past research efforts, (Hatem, 1980) (Murray and DuPaul 1981) (Cathcart et, al.1984). Murray and DuPaul (1981) documented both the magnitude and location of the problem in Maryland and Virginia. Their analysis provided a description of the total waste disposal problem in the Bay and pinpointed specific trouble spots. The report provided enterprise budgets for three locations; Hampton, Virginia, Crisfield, Maryland, and Cambridge, Maryland. Price Flexibility Analysis Of Virginia Hard Clams: Economic Considerations For Management Of The Fishery, Andre C. Kvaternik, William D. Dupaul, Thomas J. Murray

Price flexibility coefficients estimated for ex-vessel prices of Virginia hard clams indicate a very small (4.292 x 10-6 to 6.994 x 10-6%) decrease in price would occur given a 1% increase in the quantity supplied by Virginia harvesters. Data used were monthly landings of Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Maryland and North Carolina over the period 1960-1979. Fifty-eight percent of the ex-vessel price changes are not explained by the supply response model used, suggesting other market and consumer demand factors play a large role in determining ex-vessel price. Bushel samples of sea scallops (Placopecten Uagellanicus) for height-frequency analysis were obtained aboard the colUIIlercial scalloper, VIRGINIA SURF, from the mid-Atlantic region on two trips during the summer of 1979. Fishing effort was concentrated in three areas of the shelf: 1) Sixty miles east of the Virginia-North Carolina border, 2) Seventy miles east of the coast from Cape Henlopen, Delaware to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and 3) Forty-five miles south of Long Island from Moriches Bay to Bridgehampton.
