ABSTRACT The effect of storm surge on wave refraction patterns along 320 km of shoreline in the Virginian Sea (Mid-Atlantic Shelf) has been investigated using an analytical model. Two types of storm surge patterns based on Bodine (1971) and Jelesnianski (1972 and 1974) are used to alter the ocean surface of the Virginian Sea Wave Climate Model (Goldsmith, et al., 1974). The first pattern, based on Bodine's (1971) Bathystrophic Storm Surge Model, is of circular shape (with the maximum sea level rise in the center) and in real situations results mostly from the inverted barometric pressure effect associated with intense …

In the Scyphozoa, pronounced morphological changes occur during strobilation which are undoubtedly preceded by changes in gene activity, metabolic pathways, and biosynthetic mechanisms : the long tentacles of the scyphistoma are retracted and a series of transverse constrictions are formed at the oral end; each transverse section develops into an ephyra and subsequently into an adult medusa. This morphological development of Chrysaora quinquecirrha has been thoroughly studied by Littleford ( 1939) and Calder ( 1972) . The effects of variation in ionic levels on the stability and replication of two bacteriophages (nt-1 and nt-6) host specific for the marine bacterium Beneckea natriegens were examined. Monovalent cations influenced the adsorption of the nt-1 but not the nt-6 phage; however, one-step growth studies showed that NaCl was required for replication of both phage. The NaCl optimum for nt-1 production was 0.25 M NaCl, the same as the growth optimum for B. natriegens. However, the optimum for nt-6 production was 0.16 M NaCl. Estuaries are highly variable coastal ecosystems. Some of the variation is seasonal and some is longitudinal along the environmental gradient from the river to the sea. Foraminifera are tuned to the periodicity, and a progressive change in the composition and structure of foraminiferal faunas parallels the longitudinal ecocline, identified by the gradient in salinity.
In marshes and tributary estuaries where water is fresh, thecamoebinids comprise the microfauna. Three other marsh faunas are composed chiefly of the agglutinate species: Ammoastuta salsa, Miliammina fusca, Arenoparrella mexicana, Alllmobaculites crassus and species of Haplophragmoides and Trochammina. Their distribution is influenced by salinity and exposure. …

Annual nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon budgets for two Virginia salt marshes were determined .by monthly measurements of water discharge and constituent concentrations over tidal cycles.
Considering all three forms of phosphorus measured (total, dissolved organic and orthophosphate) there was a net loss from the estuary to the marches. The data reveal a loss of particulate phosphorus of estuarine origin to marsh sediments and mineralization of this phosphorus in the marshes with subsequent export of dissolved inorganic and organic phosphorus back to the estuary.
Nitrogen flux data show a loss of nitrate and nitrite to the marshes. Particulate nitrogen is imported …

During 1974 the Virginia Institute of Marine Science conducted a series of oceanographic, water quality and modeling studies for the outfall from the proposed Nansemond Wastewater Treatment Plant (VIMS, 1975). One of these studies included dye releases to determine the dispersion and transport of material discharged to Hampton Roads near Pig Point. These dye releases were made from the munitions loading piers known as "Foxtrot".
The proposed outfall, as given in the Facilities Plan is located roughly one kilometer to the east-south-east of Foxtrot. Tidal circulation in Hampton Roads is quite complex and there was concern that the distribution patterns …

THE BRACKISH WATER bivalve Rangia cuneata Gray, 1831, a member of the family Mactridae, has been reported from Virginia estuaries in the past few years. This species, until recently common only along the Gulf Coast, occurred in estuaries from New Jersey to Mexico during the Pleistocene ( RICHARDS, 1938) , and now seems to be reoccupying its former range. An apical complex comparable to that found in the Sporozoa is described from zoospores of Dermocystidium marinum Mackin, Owen, and Collier, a pathogen of the American oyster (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin). The complex consists of a conoid, polar ring, up to 39 subplasmalemmal microtubules, rhoptries, and micronemes. Micropores and a subpellicular membrane equivalent were also found. Acid phosphatase activity was found in cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum, inclusion bodies, and vesicles within the conoid lumen. No polysaccharides were detected in the rhoptries and micronemes using the Thiéry method. Observations indicate that D. marinum is a protozoan in the subphylum Apicomplexa and …

A new species of oyster pathogen, Marteilia sydneyi, from Australian oysters, Crassostrea commercialis, is described incorporating light and electron microscope observations. The pathogen is a haplosporidan which exists as a plasmodium in the oyster hepatopancreas. Upon sporulation, 8 to 16 uninucleate sporangial primordia are internally cleaved (endogenously budded) from each plasmodium; thus conversion to a sporangiosorus occurs. Each sporangium enlarges and internally cleaves into 2 or 3 spore primordia each of which, in turn, internally cleaves into 3 uninucleate sporoplasms of graded sizes, the largest containing the smaller 2 in a vacuole and the intermediate-sized one containing the smallest in …

The peak effect of the flood waters produced by Tropical Storm Agnes was seen on June 25 in the James, June 26 in the Rappahannock, and June 30 in the York. Recovery toward normal salinity conditions after the high runoffs proceeded discontinuously, with alternating periods of vertical stratification and destratification. During strongly stratified stages, saline water advanced upstream along the bottom. In the York and James Rivers, the most dramatic stratification occurred about July 20- 25. Intensive trawl surveys during and after Tropical Storm Agnes were mounted on the James, York, and Rappahannock Rivers to measure the effects of the floodwaters on the distribution and abundance of fish. The direct effect of Agnes on the fish populations was minor and temporary. The normal zone was extended downriver. A substantial portion of the lower-river (marine) species was also displaced downstream and into Chesapeake Bay, but had returned by the follow-up surveys. The diverse zooplankton found in marine and estuarine waters serves an important role in food chains, converting phytoplankton and detrital material into protein rich animal tissues necessary in the nutrition of higher life forms, such as the young stages of decapod crustaceans and fishes. Generally free-floating or only weak swimmers, zooplankters are readily entrained in cooling waters pumped into power plants.
