Water Quality Model Of York River, Virginia, Paul V. Hyer
Water Quality Model Of York River, Virginia, Paul V. Hyer
Reports
A ten-component time·-dependent Phytoplankton Ecosystem model was calibrated and verified for the York Estuary. Since the York is both wide and deep and is characterized by low dissolved oxygen levels in the deeper layer, this model has two layers and three compartments laterally per layer. The calibrated and verified model is suitable for use in studying water quality in the York, such as the.development of waste load allocations.

Dam Neck Current Analysis Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, Virgina, C. S. Welch, K. P. Kiley
Reports
Current records and meteorological records have been searched and interpreted to estimate some current related factors in the vicinity of Dam Neck, Virginia. The current data consists of approximately 30 day current meter records taken in summer 1973 and drogued buoy tracks recorded in autumn 1972. Estimated quantities include vector averaged current, maximum anticipated current associated with winter storms, tidal current ellipses, the seasons during which winter storms can be expected, and the keys to the end and beginning of the winter (stormy) season in any given year. A discussion of hurricanes is also included.

Hydrography And Hydrodynamics Of Virgina Estuaries Xv: Mathematical Model Studies Of Water Quality Of The Nansemond Estuary, A. Y. Kuo, L. R. Kilch
Reports
In Summer, 1974, an intensive field survey was conducted in the Nansemond River estuary from Suffolk to Pig Point. Temporal and spatial distributions of the parameters dissolved oxygen, salinity and temperature were obtained from the survey. Additional slack water runs were conducted in 1974 and 1975. The hydrographic and water quality data, combined with measured bathymetric profiles, were used to construct, calibrate and verify a one-dimensional, time-dependent mathematical model. Modeling of the Nansemond River estuary is part of the continuing program of the Cooperative State Agencies (Virginia State Water Control Board and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science) to develop …

Importance Of Predation By Crabs And Fishes On Benthic Infauna In Chesapeake Bay, Rw Virstein
Importance Of Predation By Crabs And Fishes On Benthic Infauna In Chesapeake Bay, Rw Virstein
VIMS Articles
The significance of large motile predators in controlling the distribution and abundance of the macrobenthic invertebrates within the sediments (the infauna) in a shallow subtidal sand community was tested using manipulative field experiments. The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) and 2 species of bottom—feeding fishes, spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) and hogchoker (Trinectes maculatus), were either excluded from or confined to small areas using wire mesh cages. Callinectes and Leiostomus effectively reduced infaunal desnities; Trinectes did not. The infauna responded to decreased predation with a large increase in density and diversity within 2 mo. The large population increases were exhibited by opportunistic species, …
