Plasmodium Falciparum Appears To Have Arisen As A Result Of Lateral Transfer Between Avian And Human Hosts, A. P. Waters, D. G. Higgins, T. F. Mccutchan
Harold W. Manter Laboratory: Library Materials
It has been proposed that the acquisition of Plasmodium falciparum by man is a relatively recent event and that the sustained presence of this disease in man is unlikely to have been possible prior to the establishment of agriculture. To establish phylogenetic relationships among the Plasmodum species and to unravel the mystery of the orign of P. fakiparum, we have analyzed and compared phylogenetically the small-subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences of the species of malaria that infect humans as well as a number of those sequences from species that infect animals. Although this comparison confirmed the three established …

A significant amount of the total protein in the spore sacs of the microsporidian Thelohania sp. consisted of the cytoskeletal elements, cytokeratin intermediate filaments, and the desmosomal analogues. The cytokeratin and desmosomal analogues were organized as cage envelopes surrounding the spores within the spore sac stage. Thelohania sp. parasitizes the skeletal muscle of Callinectes sapidus, a crustacean that does not appear to have cytokeratins or desmosomes. Immunoprobe data indicate Thelohania sp. has a 240 kDa desmoplakin protein and 48, 51, 54 and 56 kDa cytokeratin polypeptides responsive to antibodies developed against bovine cytoskeletal counterparts. The cytoskeletal envelopes within the …

Since 1986, 364 tuco-tucos (Ctenomys spp.) representing 7 species were collected from 16 major collecting areas representing at least 4 distinct ecological habitats in Bolivia, South America. All were examined for coccidia, and 125 (34%) had oocysts in their feces including 84 of 236 (36%) Ctenomys boliviensis from tropical palm/savanna habitats; 1 of 3 (33%) Ctenomys conoveri from a chaco thorn forest; 3 of 7 (33%) Ctenomys frater from medium altitude grass habitats; and 6 of 8 (75%) Ctenomys lewisi and 31 of 35 (88%) Ctenomys opimus from high altitude/puna habitats. None of 3 Ctenomys leucodon (high altitude/puna) or …

Andrya rauschi n. sp. from Microtus guentheri differs from all other species in testes number (22-40) and distribution. Andryar auschi is superficially similar to Paranoplocephala omphalodes but differs in the development of the uterus. Paranoplocephala nevoi n. sp. from Spalax ehrenbergi, is most similar to Paranoplocephala gundii,/i> and Paranoplocephalaja nickii but differs in the number of testes (26-44). Paranoplocephala nevoi differs from the remaining species in the distribution of testes and in having unilateral genital pores.

Metacestodes (cysticerci) of Taenia omissa Liihe, 1910, and Taenia hydatigena Pallas, 1776, were found in 9 and one of 124 white-tailed deer, respectively, in southern Florida in 1984-1986. Intensities of T. omissa varied from 1 to 15 (x[bar] = 4.6); only one cysticercus of T. hydatigena was collected. No significant difference in the prevalences of T. omissa according to sex, age, or locality was observed.
Life History Differences Between Two Species Of Gregarina In Tenebrio Molitor Larva, Tim R. Ruhnke, John J. Janovy Jr.
Life History Differences Between Two Species Of Gregarina In Tenebrio Molitor Larva, Tim R. Ruhnke, John J. Janovy Jr.
John Janovy Publications
The life histories of two species of Gregarina, protozoans parasitizing Tenebrio molitor, were compared. Gregarina cuneata occurred primarily in larger larvae, whereas Gregarina steini was distributed evenly throughout all sizes of larvae. As larval size increased, an increase in prevalence of G. cuneata preceded a more substantial increase in parasite relative density. Sample variance/relative density ratios of the two parasite species also differed. When host larvae were isolated in a sterile bran medium, the prevalence of G. cuneata decreased, whereas that of G. steini remained relatively high. Trophozoites of G. cuneata were found predominantly in a paired condition, …

Fecal samples of 14 Conolophus subcristatus from Isla Plaza Sur and of 24 Tropidurus delanonis from Isla Española and several satellite islets, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, collected during June and July 1987 were examined for coccidian oocysts. None of the samples from C. subcristatus contained oocysts, but 11 of 24 (46%) samples from T. delanonis had oocysts when examined. Two Eimeria and 1 Isospora spp. were present, which we describe here as new species. Sporulated oocysts of Eimeria tropidura n. sp. are ellipsoidal, 32.5 x 23.8 (21-38 x 19-30) μm, with spheroidal to subspheroidal sporocysts, 8.2 x 7.9 (7-10 x 5-10) …
Prevalence Of Baculovirus Penaei In Experimentally Infected White Shrimp (Penaeus Vannamei) Relative To Age, Brian D. Leblanc, Robin M. Overstreet
Prevalence Of Baculovirus Penaei In Experimentally Infected White Shrimp (Penaeus Vannamei) Relative To Age, Brian D. Leblanc, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
Age of Penaeus vannamei influences infections with Baculovirus penaei in different ways. The virus has less effect on host survival in the older of seven tested age-groups of shrimp experimentally administered virus; no virus-induced mortality occurred in postlarvae older than 63 days. Prevalence of newly acquired infections decreases as age increases, sometimes to zero. Prepatency periods appear to increase by a few days in infections in most successively older tested age-groups. Actual and relative numbers of affected hepatopancreatic cells decrease from 75 or 80% typically seen in postlarvae infected when 3 days old to ≤ 5% typically seen in infected …

Fecal samples from 223 heteromyid rodents of 4 genera and 13 species were collected from California, New Mexico, and Texas and from Baja California Norte and Sonora, Mexico. Of these, 84 (38%) were infected with coccidian oocysts; 72 of 84 (86%) infected animals had only 1 species of coccidian. Eleven species of coccidia were identified including 1 cyclosporan and 10 eimerians; the cyclosporan and 2 of the eimerians are described as new species. Sporulated oocysts of Cyclospora angimurinensis n. sp. were subspheroidal, 21.9 x 19.3 (19-24 x 16-22) μm, with sporocysts lemon-shaped, 11.9 x 9.5 (9-15 x 8-11) μm; it …

Replication and amplification of RNA genomes of defective interfering (DI) particles of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) depend on the expression of viral proteins and have untD now been attained only in ceUs coinfected with helper VSV. In the work described in this report, we used a recombinant vaccinia virus-T7 RNA polymerase expression system to synthesize individual VSV proteins in cells transfected with plasmid DNAs that contain cDNA copies of the VSV genes downstream of the T7 RNA polymerase promoter. In this way, we were able to examine the ability of VSV proteins, individually and in combination, to support DI particle …

A virus, tentatively identified as reo-like, occurred concurrently with experimentally-induced Baculovirus penaei (BP) infection in cultured white shrimp larvae Penaeus vannamei. Each shrimp with a reo-like viral infection also had a BP infection, but not all BP-infected shrimp had a reo-like infection. Both viruses occurred in the same tissues and occasionally withln the same cell. The reolike virus developed in epithelial cells of the anterior midgut and in reserve- and fibrillar-cells of the hepatopancreas. The paraspherical and non-enveloped reo-like virions (ca. 50 nm diam.) occurred as unordered aggregates in the cell cytoplasm. Their etiology has not been determined. Reo-like …
