No-till planting of pumpkin into a killed winter rye cover crop is a system used by growers in a number of states, including Indiana. Advantages mentioned by producers in addition to soil health benefits from the cover crop include cleaner pumpkins at harvest, and in rainy seasons, less mud in the field at harvest time. This paper reports on a project to develop a workable no-till system at a university research farm that can be used for demonstration and in future research to better understand and improve production practices. The seven zucchini squash evaluated ranged in total yield from 1432 to 1798 half-bushels/acre. All seven entries were statistically similar in total yield, however differences were found in yield of small, medium, large, and cull fruit. Each entry has commercial potential in Southwest Michigan, especially if they have virus tolerance. One yellow squash (Blonde Beauty) was also in the trial but not included in statistical evaluation.

Pumpkins are grown on 5,000 acres in Indiana with an average yield of 6.75 tons per acre. Successful pumpkin production requires the use of varieties that yield well and produce pumpkins of the size, shape, color, and quality demanded by the market. Genetic resistance to the fungal disease powdery mildew is present in some varieties. This trial was designed to evaluate performance of pumpkin varieties in northern Indiana with and without treatment for powdery mildew. The trial included fourteen orange jack-o-lantern size pumpkins, one small or 'pie' pumpkin and one specialty yellow pumpkin.

"No-till production systems for pumpkins are of interest to Midwest producers, but achieving acceptable weed control without cultivation can be difficult. Research was conducted in Wanatah, Indiana in 2007 to evaluate postemergence weed control options for pumpkins no-till planted into a fall-seeded, spring-killed winter wheat cover crop. Weeds in no-till pumpkins were controlled reasonably well with a preemergence herbicide (Strategy®) followed by a hooded sprayer, row-middle application of a nonselective, nonresidual herbicide (glyphosate). Weed control, yield, and fruit size with this treatment were comparable to conventional tillage with a preemergence herbicide (Strategy®) and one cultivation. Hand weeding could be substituted …

Double-cropping pumpkins after wheat provides an opportunity to harvest a high-value crop off of land that might otherwise remain uncropped. In northern Indiana, many jack-o- lantern pumpkin cultivars may not mature quickly enough to produce a crop when planted in mid-July. Pumpkins grown for Halloween and other decorative purposes continue to be an important crop for many Midwestern vegetable farmers. Breeders are developing new varieties with improved appearance and disease resistance or tolerance. Trials were conducted at Meigs Horticultural Facility, Throckmorton Purdue Ag Center in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, and on farms in Allen and Whitley Counties in northeastern Indiana to evaluate new cultivars and lines and compare them with older cultivars. This paper reports on yield and fruit size of 31 varieties grown at one or more of the trial locations.
