Kentucky Tobacco Research and Development Center Faculty Publications

On chromosome 4 in the Arabidopsis genome, two neighboring genes (calmodulin methyl transferase At4g35987 and senescence associated gene At4g35985) are located in a head-to-head divergent orientation sharing a putative bidirectional promoter. This 1258 bp intergenic region contains a number of environmental stress responsive and tissue specific cis-regulatory elements. Transcript analysis of At4g35985 and At4g35987 genes by quantitative real time PCR showed tissue specific and stress inducible expression profiles. We tested the bidirectional promoter-function of the intergenic region shared by the divergent genes At4g35985 and At4g35987 using two reporter genes (GFP and GUS) in both orientations in transient tobacco protoplast and …

Plants And Plant Products Useful For Biofuel Manufacture And Feedstock, And Methods Of Producing Same, Seth Debolt, Darby Harris, Jozsef Stork Feb 2013

Plants And Plant Products Useful For Biofuel Manufacture And Feedstock, And Methods Of Producing Same, Seth Debolt, Darby Harris, Jozsef Stork

Horticulture Faculty Patents

A method of processing plant cellulose includes providing plant cellulose that is from a plant expressing a CESA polypeptide variant having at least one amino acid mutation in its carboxy-terminal transmembrane region; and saccharifying the plant cellulose to produce fermentable sugars. The method can also include fermenting the fermentable sugars to produce alcohol. A method of producing a plant having beneficial saccharification properties includes introducing into a plant a polynucleotide encoding a CESA polypeptide variant having at least one amino acid mutation in its carboxy-terminal transmembrane region; and expressing in the plant the CESA polypeptide variant, wherein plant cellulose of …

Inhibitors Of Plant Peptide Deformylase For Use As Broad-Spectrum Herbicides And Methods For Identifying The Same, Robert L. Houtz, Lynnette M. A. Dirk, Mark Alan Wiliams

Horticulture Faculty Patents

The invention relates to a method of identifying herbicides and to the use of inhibitors of plant peptide deformylase as broad spectrum herbicides.

Copy Number Variation Shapes Genome Diversity In Arabidopsis Over Immediate Family Generational Scales, Seth Debolt Jan 2010

Copy Number Variation Shapes Genome Diversity In Arabidopsis Over Immediate Family Generational Scales, Seth Debolt

Horticulture Faculty Publications

Arabidopsis thaliana is the model plant and is grown worldwide by plant biologists seeking to dissect the molecular underpinning of plant growth and development. Gene copy number variation (CNV) is a common form of genome natural diversity that is currently poorly studied in plants and may have broad implications for model organism research, evolutionary biology, and crop science. Herein, comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) was used to identify and interrogate regions of gene CNV across the A. thaliana genome. A common temperature condition used for growth of A. thaliana in our laboratory and many around the globe is 22 degrees C. …
