Methylmalonic aciduria and homocystinuria, CblC type (cblC) syndrome (MIM 277400) is a genetic disorder resulting from a mutation in the MMACHC gene. This gene plays a crucial role as a chaperone in the conversion of vitamin B12 into its active form, which is essential for proper cellular metabolism. cblC syndrome is heterogenous by nature, primarily attributed to the extensive damage it causes across multiple bodily systems. In cases of early onset of cblC syndrome, patients may exhibit a diverse range of clinical symptoms including difficulties with feeding, dysmorphic features, microcephaly, brain abnormalities, hypotonia, developmental delays, and seizures. Aedes aegypti is a medically important mosquito species that transmits multiple arboviruses, including dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. This mosquito species has expanded its geographical range into expanded into the Northern Chihuahuan Desert to further increase the risk of infection by these viruses in naïve human populations. Global climate change has resulted in geographic range shifts of flora and fauna at a global scale. Extreme environments, like the Arctic, are seeing some of the most pronounced changes. This region covers 14% of the Earthâ??s land area, and while many arctic species are widespread, understanding ecotypic variation at the genomic level will be important for elucidating how range shifts will affect ecological processes. In typical genomics studies involving numerous association tests of gene mutations with a disease, error rate control via multiplicity adjustment is paramount because even if all genes were to be non-differentially associated, we would still make some false positives. Many methods exist that incorporate the control of multiplicity for normally distributed endpoints in sample size estimation, but none addresses the issue for non-normally correlated endpoints.

Roads can fragment habitat and increase mortality rates of wildlife, potentially reducing population sizes and gene flow, which in turn can reduce genetic diversity through genetic drift. Although negative road impacts have been found in a variety of taxa, not all species are impacted. For instance, species that move less and rarely encounter roads and those that avoid the roads are predicted to not be negatively affected. Yet tests of these predictions are uncommon, especially for reptiles and particularly lizards. Side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) are small sit-and-wait predators, while the larger marbled whiptails (Aspidoscelis marmorata) are active foragers. Their responses …

1. Cryptic speciation in zooplankton is a phenomenon that has been recently gaining much attention. This is due in part to advances in molecular techniques which help in the identification of morphologically indistinct species. Organisms that have been traditionally believed to have cosmopolitan distributions are being found to be composed of cryptic species complexes with high levels of genetic divergence among lineages.

The Lens Epithelial Derived Growth Factor p75 (LEDGF/p75) is a chromatin bound protein whose cellular function is not yet clearly known. A role in transcriptional regulation had been previously proposed based on its interaction with the basal transcriptional machinery and on its effects on the expression of genes involved in the cellular response to environmental stresses. To further elucidate the function of LEDGF/p75, we conducted a global and unbiased evaluation of the role of this protein in gene expression. The Chihuahuan Desert is a unique region with high biodiversity. There is a high degree endemism of freshwater biota, but relatively few studies have been focused on zooplankton. Bdelloid rotifers are one component of these ecosystems and often dominate very temporary habitats. Bdelloids are usually assumed to be cosmopolitan species due to their potentially high dispersal rates. Distribution records of the bdelloid P. megalotrocha extend from North America to New Zealand. Systematics Of The Genus Ptychadena Boulenger, 1917 (Anura: Ptychadenidae) From Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Katrina Marie Weber

This thesis increases the scope of previous phylogenetic analyses that revealed high levels of genetic differentiation within the anuran genus Ptychadena. Herein, I increase sampling of Central African populations of Ptychadena by over six times to examine their relationships to other African populations and to search for cryptic species. This study represents the most comprehensive molecular phylogeny of Ptychadena to date. A total of three mitochondrial (12S, 16S, and cyt b) and two nuclear (RAG1 and rhodopsin) genes were sequenced for 67 specimens of Ptychadena. The epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is ranked as a major public health priority across the United States and especially in the El Paso, Texas region. The risk for the development of T2DM is greater in minority groups, particularly among Mexican Americans (MA) who comprise approximately 78% of El Paso's population. The growing incidence of T2DM in this group is typically attributed to increase in weight (obesity). The incidence of diabetes may also be influenced by genetic factors that are unique to this group.
