A 16-18 year-old aspen stand was harvested in 1969. Aerial biomass components were determined and soils evaluated. Treatments of fertilizer, irrigation, fertilizer + irrigation and control were applied over a seven year period following harvest. Stand measurements were taken periodically over 18 years. Fertilization produced growth increases of 45-55 percent. Height, diameter, and stems per acre were affected by treatments. Guidelines for fertilizer application were developed from leaf tissue analysis.

Tall shrubs are a dynamic component of upland forests in the Lake States (Balogh 1983, Dunn 1986, Ohmann and Ream 1971). They are an integral part of forest element cycles, competitors with overstory for growth and reproduction, essential to post-harvest site stabilization, and a source of wildlife cover and browse (Comerford and White 1977, Dunn 1986, Robinette 1972, Tappeiner 1971).

Numbers of breeding birds were estimated for various sizes and ages of clearcuts, for edge habitat created by the clearcuts, leave strips between clearcuts, and uncut aspen forest (controls). Total numbers of birds were not different among three size classes or five age classes of clearcuts. Total were lower on clearcuts than on edges but not different from controls or leave strips.

Breeding birds on an aspen forest in southwestern Colorado increased in species diversity after 25% of the timber sale area forest was clearcut in patches of 3 to 20 acres. Bird population density on the forest with clearcuts was not significantly different from that on an uncut forest. Of the 20 species evaluated, six were more and one was less abundant than on the uncut forest.

Substantial acreages of aspen in the Rocky Mountains are being regenerated by clearcutting; however, there is little information on the quality of the suckers that reestablish in these areas. Whether the new stands will be more or less defective than their predecessors is unknown.

Conifer management in the lake States requires the land manager have a diverse set of tools to accomplish the task of plantation establishment and survival. Methods are almost as variable as the soils of the region, which as remnants of ancient seas, volcanos and more recent glaciers. Terrain, soil profile, drainage, aspect and climate are some of the basic factors contributing to the diversity of sites and management regimes practices in the region. Herbicides are an important part of successful conifer management regimes. Approximately 70M forested acres are treated annually in MN, WI and the Upper Peninsula of MI.
