Characterization Of Aspen Isoprene Synthase, An Enzyme Responsible For Leaf Isoprene Emission To The Atmosphere, Gary M. Silver, Ray Fall

Aspen Bibliography

Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is a volatile hydrocarbon emitted from many plant species to the atmosphere, where it plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry. An enzyme extracted from aspen (Populus tremuloides) leaves was previously found to catalyze the Mg2+-dependent elimination of pyrophosphate from dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) to form isoprene (Silver, G. M., and Fall, R.(1991) Plant Physiol. 97, 1588-1591). This enzyme, isoprene synthase, has now been purified 4000-fold to near homogeneity. The enzyme had a native molecular mass of 98-137 kDa and isoelectric point of 4.7 and contained 58- and 62-kDa subunits, implying that it is a heterodimer. …

Plant Community Changes Over 54 Years Within The Great Basin Experimental Range, Manti-La Sal National Forest, Scott C. Walker, David K. Mann, E. Durant Mcarthur

Aspen Bibliography

Plant community changes and natural succession over time impact forage values, watershed quality, wildlife habitat, and ecosystem dynamics. Comparisons were made between a vegetation map of community types completed in 1937 by the U.S. Forest Service, and vegetation maps compiled in 1990 of the same areas by satellite imagery, and through 1991 areal photo interpretation combined with ground truthing. The study area includes nearly all of the drainage in Ephraim Canyon located in central Utah which consists of 6,027 acres (2,439 ha). Elevation ranges from 6,600 to 10,400 feet (2,040 to 3,210 m). Vegetation types ranged from pinyon-juniper woodland through …

Inorganic Nitrogen Determined By Laboratory And Field Extractions Of Two Forest Soils, H. Van Miegroet Jan 1995

Inorganic Nitrogen Determined By Laboratory And Field Extractions Of Two Forest Soils, H. Van Miegroet

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

To assess the effect of a delay in soil processing on inorganic N levels in N-rich soils, field and laboratory extractions were compared at two forested sites with high N mineralization and nitrification potential. At eight sampling dates in 1989 and 1990, five mineral soil cores per site were taken between 0- and 10-cm depth and transported on ice to the laboratory for KCl extraction and NH4-N and NO3-N analysis. At three sampling dates in 1990, soil extractions were performed in the field immediately following sampling, and inorganic N concentrations were compared between extractions. Nitrate-N increased four- to sevenfold (net …

Ecology And Management Of Larix Forests: A Look Ahead ... Proceedings Of An International Symposium, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1995

Ecology And Management Of Larix Forests: A Look Ahead ... Proceedings Of An International Symposium, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

This proceedings is the product of an international symposium on the Larix species of North America, Europe, and Asia. Western larch, an important species in the Western United States and Canada, was featured. The symposium included information on ecology, management, silviculture, regeneration processes, growth, wildlife, vegetation succession, silvics, history, genetics, breeding and provenance testing, physiology, fire, insects and disease, and research need. This proceedings illustrates the importance of Larix in the temperate forests of the Northern Hemisphere.

Pulpwood Production In The Lake States, 1993, Ronald J. Piva

Aspen Bibliography

Pulpwood production in the Lake States increased from 8.8 million cords in 1992 to 9.4 million cords in 1993. Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin pulpwood production is shown by county and species group.

Improving Aspen Kraft Pulp By A Novel, Low Technology Fungal Pretreatment, Y.R. Chen, E.L. Schmidt

Aspen Bibliography

This study investigated the biopulping agent Phanerochaete chrysosporium with a new process that required neither wood sterilization nor pure culture incubation conditions. Aspen (Populus tremuloides Michaux) chip bales with three treatments were studied. Each bale was kraft cooked after 8.5 weeks of pretreatment. The effects of fungal inoculation and foil-wrapping on pulp and paper strength properties were evaluated. Fungal pretreatment caused significantly faster response to beating as lower freeness was noted. Foil-wrapping retarded the loss of moisture within the bale, and as a result, prolonged fungal activities, resulting in substantial increases in burst strength. Tear was slightly increased, but there …
