Antioxidant Properties And Anti-Cancer Effects Of Polyphenols In Sweetpotato Leaves, Josue Bolanos Dec 2020

Antioxidant Properties And Anti-Cancer Effects Of Polyphenols In Sweetpotato Leaves, Josue Bolanos

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the root is widely consumed, sweetpotato leaves (SPL) are often discarded and are only consumed in a few countries. In the United States, SPL consumption is limited to private gardens, particularly in the Southeastern United States. Not only are SPL a good source of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, but they also contain polyphenol compounds including the caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and carotenoids such as lutein. Several studies have shown the polyphenol contents and antioxidant capacities of SPL, which vary based on year and variety, while few studies have shown anti-colon cancer effects of SPL. Therefore, this study investigated …

Anti-Inflammatory Effect Of Red Seaweed Extracts, Yingying Yang Sep 2020

Anti-Inflammatory Effect Of Red Seaweed Extracts, Yingying Yang

Masters Theses

Red seaweeds are reported to represent the largest group of algae, with more species accounted for than the combination of brown and green seaweeds. Due to the high amount of polysaccharides in red seaweeds, they are mainly utilized for commercial agar and carrageenan production in industry. However, increasing studies indicate other valuable compounds such as lipids and polyphenols could be potential utilized for multiple human needs (e.g., drug development) (1, 2). With increasing studies demonstrating the potential health benefits of seaweed components, two red seaweed species commonly consumed in Asia, hong qı´ lı´n c a`i (HQL), Eucheuma sp and zhe` …

The results showed that the best conditions for extracting polyphenols from peony seeds were the ratio of material to liquid 1∶14 (g/mL), ultrasonic power 160 W, ultrasonic time 98 min, extraction temperature 57 ℃. Under the best technological conditions, the extraction rate …

Study Of In Vitro Bioaccessibility And In Vivo Bioavailability Of Khalas Variety Date Seed Polyphenols For Functional Application In The Human Diet, Serene Hilary Jun 2020

Study Of In Vitro Bioaccessibility And In Vivo Bioavailability Of Khalas Variety Date Seed Polyphenols For Functional Application In The Human Diet, Serene Hilary

Food Science Dissertations

Date seeds are an ideal source of polyphenols for the food industry. This doctoral work investigated Khalas variety date seeds in three forms, as powder (DSP), ethanolic extract (DSE) and functional food developed with the seeds; pita bread (DSB). The study characterised the polyphenol profile by mass spectrometry and investigated the bioaccessibility using simulated in vitro digestion coupled with Caco- 2 model for absorption and transport. It further explored the bioavailability of date seed polyphenols in vivo in humans by conducting a cross-over study in 16 healthy volunteers. The crossover study explored the urinary excretion of polyphenol metabolites, and the …

Extraction And Antioxidant Activities Of Polyphenol From Magnolia Kwangsiensis Figlar & Noot. Branch, Zheng Yan-Fei, Zhang Qiang, Lan Liang-Mei, Xu Jian-Ben, Huang Qiu-Ping, Lin Yi-Na May 2020

Extraction And Antioxidant Activities Of Polyphenol From Magnolia Kwangsiensis Figlar & Noot. Branch, Zheng Yan-Fei, Zhang Qiang, Lan Liang-Mei, Xu Jian-Ben, Huang Qiu-Ping, Lin Yi-Na

Food and Machinery

The extraction of polyphenols from the branches of Magnolia kwangsiensis figlar & noot. (M. kwangsiensis) was studied by ultrasonic-assisted extraction. The extraction condition was optimized by response surface methodology. The antioxidant activities of M. kwangsiensis branch polyphenols were evaluated in aspect of total antioxidant activity, DPPH· scavenging activity and ·OH scavenging effect. Results showed the optimum conditions were acetone concentration 67%, liquid-solid ratio 22 (mL/g), extraction time 20 min, and the yield of polyphenols reached 1.45%. The polyphenols from the branches of M. kwangsiensis had certain total antioxidant activity, but had good scavenging effects on DPPH· and ·OH.

Anti-Inflammatory Effect And Molecular Mechanism Of Durian Hull Polyphenols On Lps-Induced Raw 264.7 Macrophages, Liu Wen-Qiang, Zhang Yi-Ling, Xiong Hua, Zhu Xue-Mei, Sun Yong Apr 2020

Anti-Inflammatory Effect And Molecular Mechanism Of Durian Hull Polyphenols On Lps-Induced Raw 264.7 Macrophages, Liu Wen-Qiang, Zhang Yi-Ling, Xiong Hua, Zhu Xue-Mei, Sun Yong

Food and Machinery

In this study, polyphenols from Durian hull were extracted by 80% methanol, and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were investigated based on in vitro antioxidant assays and LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells model. The results demonstrated that durian hull extract was rich in polyphenols, it showed strong antioxidant activity in vitro and it could reduce the expression level of inducible nitricoxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), decrease the NO production, and also lower the pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6) at the mRNA and protein levels. At the same time, it can inhibit the phosphorylation of IκB and p65 proteins related …

Changes In Microbiota Community Structure And Antioxidant Activity Of Polyphenols From Litchi Pericarp During Degradation With Human Fecal Microbiota In Vitro, Huang Xiao-Xia, Li Xiao-Le, Li Wu, Yang Rui-Li Apr 2020

Changes In Microbiota Community Structure And Antioxidant Activity Of Polyphenols From Litchi Pericarp During Degradation With Human Fecal Microbiota In Vitro, Huang Xiao-Xia, Li Xiao-Le, Li Wu, Yang Rui-Li

Food and Machinery

To reveal the changes in microbiota community structure and antioxidant activity of polyphenols from litchi pericarp during culture with human fecal microbiota, litchi pericarp polyphenols were added into the mixed medium of intestinal microbiota solution prepared from fresh feces of healthy volunteers for the anaerobic culture in vitro. The total phenol content and antioxidant activities were measured at 0, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 h. The change of intestinal microbiota was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the total phenol content significantly decreased within 0~48 h and the antioxidant activity was also reduced but did not attain …

Polyphenol-Rich Purple Corn Pericarp Extract Adversely Impacts Herbivore Growth And Development, Mandeep Tayal, Pavel Somavat, Isabella Rodriguez, Tina Thomas, Bradley O. Christoffersen, Rupesh R. Kariyat

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Plant secondary metabolites such as terpenes, phenolics, glycosides, and alkaloids play various functional roles including pigmentation, foliar and floral volatile synthesis, hormonal regulation, and direct and indirect defenses. Among these, phenolic compounds are commonly found in plants, but vary in the distribution of their specific compounds among plant families. Polyphenols, including anthocyanins and tannins, are widely distributed and have been well documented for their roles- primarily in plant pigmentation and also in plant defenses. However, commercialization of such compounds for use in insect pest management is severely hampered by expensive, inefficient, and time-consuming extraction protocols. Using a recently developed inexpensive …
