Phylogenetic Systematic Analysis Of The Trichostrongylidae (Nematoda), With An Initial Assessment Of Coevolution And Biogeography, Eric P. Hoberg, J. Ralph Lichtenfels

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Phylogenetic analysis of the subfamilies of the Trichostrongylidae based on 22 morphological transformation series produced a single cladogram with a consistency index (CI) = 74.2%. Monophyly for the family was supported by the structure of the female tail and copulatory bursa. Two major clades are recognized: the Cooperiinae clade with the basal Cooperiinae and Libyostrongylinae + Trichostrongylinae, and the Graphidiinae clade with the basal Graphidiinae and Ostertagiinae + Haemonchinae. Dendrograms presented by Durette- Desset (1985) (CI = 56.1%) and Lichtenfels (1987), based on the key to the Trichostrongylidae by Gibbons and Khalil (1982) (CI = 59.0%), were found to be …

The Warnbro Sound Crab Fishery Draft Management Plan., Fiona Crowe Nov 1994

The Warnbro Sound Crab Fishery Draft Management Plan., Fiona Crowe

Fisheries management papers

In recent years fishing effort for the blue summer/manna crabs (Portunus pelagicus) in Warnbro Sound has increased dramatically and concerns have been raised about the state of stocks of crabs in Warnbro Sound. As a result of the increased pressure being put on the limited resource, the relationship between professional and recreational user groups has become sensitive. It is therefore appropriate that measures ensure the responsible management of the Warnbro Sound Crab Fishery be introduced. Gear, bag limit and size restrictions on the taking of blue swimmer crabs by recreational fishermen already exists as part of the the overall recreational …

Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Commitee Chairman's Report, October 1994 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery - Management Proposals For The 1994/95 And 1995/96 Seasons, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee, Peter Rogers

Fisheries management papers

The failures of past restrictions on fishing effort to fully halt the decline of the breeding stock led to the formation of a sub-committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee. The prime objective of the sub-committee is to evaluate effective long term strategies for managing the fishery so that breeding stock is maintained at an adequate level despite the inevitable increases in catching efficiency. The purpose of this report is firstly to advise industry of the management proposals for the 1994/95 seasons and secondly to form a basis for industry consultation on management arrangements for the 1995/96 season.

Long Term Management Strategies For The Western Rock Lobster Industry (4 Volumes) - Economic Efficiency Of Alternative Input And Output Based Management Systems In The Western Rock Lobster Fishery (Volume 2), Bob Lindner

Fisheries management papers

Since 1965, the Western Rock Lobster Fishery has been managed by what is essentially a license limitation scheme invoiving restricted entry for boats, and strict controls on the aggregate number of pots which can be used by the commercial fishing sector. By most measures, management of this fishery has been highly successful. Biological over-exploitation of the fish stock has been prevented, at least until recently. Notwithstanding these achievements, there is widespread concern that the future profitability, and even the viability of the industry is under threat unless the current management practices are reformed. Because of the complexity and intrinsic uncertainty …

Fisheries management papers

In October 1992 a special Sub-Committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee was set up to consider and evaluate future management strategies for the rock lobster fishery. Pursuant to this the Director of Fisheries commissioned a marketing study that is the basis of this report. This study was commenced in early October 1993 and completed in May 1994. This study looked at the market implications of fishery's management strategies. In particular it assesses how the existing management structure limits the potential for the lobster industry to maximise the financial return, and in doing so provides an insight into the …

Open Corridors In A Heavily Forested Landscape: Impact On Shrubland And Forest-Interior Birds, Robert A. Askins

Biology Faculty Publications

In eastern North America, remnant patches of forest surrounded by open habitat constitute unfavorable habitat for many species of migratory forest birds because of high rates of nest predation and cowbird parasitism. Although most evidence for this relationship comes from 'forest islands' surrounded by residential or agricultural land, even forest patches isolated from other forests by narrow open corridors such as roads and powerline rights-of-way seem to show this pattern. Productive habitat for migratory birds can be maintained by consolidating corridors and routing them along the periphery of forests to retain as much continuous forest as possible. Consolidation of open …

Testing Hypotheses About Evolutionary Change On Single Branches Of A Phylogeny Using Evolutionary Contrasts, Mark A. Mcpeek Jun 1994

Testing Hypotheses About Evolutionary Change On Single Branches Of A Phylogeny Using Evolutionary Contrasts, Mark A. Mcpeek

Dartmouth Scholarship

Interspecific comparisons of phenotypes are used extensively to test hypotheses about the evolutionary forces shaping phenotypic variation, but comparative data analysis is complicated by correlations due to the common ancestry of species. The method of evolutionary contrasts removes such correlations by estimating the amount of character change between pairs of closely related species that has occurred since their most recent common ancestors. The original method allows character change to be estimated only along pairs of branches on a phylogeny, but many hypotheses address change along single branches. In this article the method of evolutionary contrasts is extended to allow character …

The Relationship Between Creep Feeding Behavior Of Piglets And Adaptation To Weaning: Effect Of Diet Quality, David Fraser, J. J.R. Feddes, E. A. Pajor Mar 1994

The Relationship Between Creep Feeding Behavior Of Piglets And Adaptation To Weaning: Effect Of Diet Quality, David Fraser, J. J.R. Feddes, E. A. Pajor

Feeding Behavior Collection

Individual variation in creep feed intake and its relation to adaptation to weaning were studied in piglets weaned at 4 wk of age. The animals received either a "low-complexity" creep-starter diet based on corn, barley and soybean meal (12 litters), or a "high-complexity", medicated, commercial diet without soybean meal (12 litters). Diets were fed as creep feed during the 2 wk before weaning, and as the sole diet during the 2 wk after weaning. Creep feeding behavior of piglets was monitored by video recording. Pigs fed the high-complexity diet consumed more creep feed (P < 0.05), tended to gain more during the week before weaning (P < 0.10), and converted feed more efficiently and gained more weight in the 2 wk after weaning (P < 0.01). Use of creep feed varied greatly among individual littermates. Multiple regression analysis showed that on the high-complexity diet, pigs that used creep feed more than their littermates tended to be those with low gains in weeks 1-3 after birth (P < 0.001), and tended to gain more weight during the week before and during the 2 wk after weaning (P < 0.01). The trends were consistent but weaker with the low-complexity diet. However, predictive power was low, with creep feeding accounting for only 4% of individual variation in post-weaning gain on the high-complexity diet and 1% on the low. Regardless of diet quality, therefore, creep feeding remained highly variable and only weakly related to weight gains during the 2 wk after weaning.

Liver Lesions In Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) From Jamaica Bay, New York: Indications Of Environmental Degradation, Thomas P. Augspurger, Roger L. Herman, Jeff S. Hatfield, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D.

Faculty Works: CERCOM

Liver sections of winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) collected from Jamaica Bay and Shinnecock Bay, New York, in 1989, were examined microscopically to determine the pervasiveness of liver lesions observed previously in Jamaica Bay winter flounder. Neoplastic lesions were not detected in fish from Jamaica Bay or the Shinnecock Bay reference site. Twenty-two percent of Jamaica Bay winter flounder examined (n=103) had unusual vacuolization of hepatocytes and biliary pre-ductal and ductal cells (referred to hereafter as the vacuolated cell lesion). The lesion, identical to that found in 25% of Jamaica Bay winter flounder examined in 1988, has previously been …

Integration Of Scientific Information Management And Environmental Research, Susan G. Stafford, James W. Brunt, William K. Michener

Long Term Ecological Research Network

A new dynamic between science and technology is changing the management and analysis of environmental information. As a result of the expanding scope of environmental research, developers of environmental databases must now address difficult and diverse issues: the wide variety of data being considered for inclusion, the size and complexity of databases being collected; their design, development and utilization, the different scales of data collection; increasingly sophisticated analytical requirements; and the integration of data from various sources and disciplines. Increased attention to spatial variability, scale and the integration of basic and applied research to address societal issues has several implications …

Age Structure Of Trees In Thorn Creek Woods, Jon Mendelson Jan 1994

Age Structure Of Trees In Thorn Creek Woods, Jon Mendelson

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Diameter distributions and age-size regressions are presented for 11 tree species from Thorn Creek Woods, Will County, Illinois. Diameter distributions showed a good fit to the negative power model of survivorship. Nevertheless, 7 of the 11 species showed the 'gap-bulge" pattern, with fewer than expected numbers in intermediate size classes. Although age-size regressions were generally significant, the scatter diagrams for most species showed clustering into two age groups undetected by regression analysis. The juxtaposition of these results suggests the presence of two cohorts on the site; one of post-settlement origin (after 1835), the other emerging after the decline of agriculture …
