A Synopsis Of The Ferns And Fern Allies Of Nebraska, With Maps Of Their Distribution, Steven B. Rolfsmeier, Robert B. Kaul, David M. Sutherland

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

An annotated list and county-by-county distribution maps are presented for the 32 species of ferns and fern allies native to Nebraska, based upon field and herbarium studies and critical evaluation of the literature. Native to the state are Isoetes melanopoda, Selaginella rupestris, five species of Equisetum, and 25 species in 18 genera of ferns. Three native species are here verified for the first time, based upon recent collections: Matteuccia struthiopteris var. pensylvanica, Ophioglossum engelmannii, and Pellaeaglabella ssp. glabella. Isoetes melanopoda was rediscovered in 2000, the first record since 1941. Rejected are published reports …

Study Of Conidia Production And Transmission Of Beauverza Bassiana (Balsamo) Vuill. In Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa Decemlineata), Silvia Fernandez Dec 2001

Study Of Conidia Production And Transmission Of Beauverza Bassiana (Balsamo) Vuill. In Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa Decemlineata), Silvia Fernandez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work is an investigation of:( 1) mortality of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), under different modes of exposure to the pathogen Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., (2) host and environmental factors affecting sporulation, production, and viability of B. bassiana conidia from infected cadavers of CPB larvae, and (3) transmission of the disease in CPB populations. The research leads to an improved understanding of the process of transmission of B. bassiana in CPB populations. This may enhance its use as a biological control agent for this pest insect. The highest rate of mortality of CPB larvae (77 percent) …

The Effect Of Mulching On Herbaceous Wetland Creation Areas In West-Central Florida, Christopher J. Anderson Oct 2001

The Effect Of Mulching On Herbaceous Wetland Creation Areas In West-Central Florida, Christopher J. Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wetland mulching is the transfer of soil (often from a wetland area which is going to filled or otherwise impacted) on to the surface of a wetland creation area. The primary intent of mulching is to transfer wetland vegetation in the form of seeds and propagules, from the natural wetland to the creation area. This technique also is used to transfer organic matter and microbial fauna existing in the soil to the creation area. My study examines the effects that wetland mulching has on: 1) percent organic matter in the soil, 2) the wetland affinity of plant communities present, 3) …

Vascular Flora Of Van Horn Woods, Plainfield Township, Will County, Il, Joseph Traina Oct 2001

Vascular Flora Of Van Horn Woods, Plainfield Township, Will County, Il, Joseph Traina

Faculty Publications & Research

The vascular flora at Van Horn Woods Park was surveyed during the 1998-2000 growing seasons. This park is a 30 hectare site located in Plainfield Township, Will County, Illi- nois (SE1/4 S27 T36N R9E). A total of 246 taxa, representing 160 genera and 67 fami- lies, were identified within or immediately adjacent to the park. Seventy-one percent of these taxa were native. Four taxa were collected and submitted to the Morton Arboretum as new county records for Will County. The quality of this site as a natural area was also assessed using quantitative methods based on floral composition and diversity. …

Herbicide Evaluation In Arkansas Cotton 2000, Marilyn Mcclelland, Jim Barrentine, Ken Smith, Nilda Burgos Oct 2001

Herbicide Evaluation In Arkansas Cotton 2000, Marilyn Mcclelland, Jim Barrentine, Ken Smith, Nilda Burgos

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Herbicidal weed control is economically important for production of cotton. Field experiments are conducted annually in Arkansas to evaluate the activity of developmental and commercial herbicides for selective control of weeds in cotton. These experiments serve both industry and Arkansas agriculture by providing information on the selectivity of herbicides still in the developmental stage and by comparing the activity of these new herbicides with that of recommended herbicides.

The Fight Against Fruit Flies In Western Australia, Andy Sproule, Sonya Broughton, Francis De Lima, Darryl Hardie, Nic Monzu, Bill Woods

Bulletins 4000 -

Western Australia’s horticulture industry is one of the State’s growing success stories, from mangoes at Kununurra to cherries at Mt Barker. The prospects are bright, especially in export markets where ‘clean and green’ produce from Western Australia is truly valued.

One blight on this ‘clean and green’ image has been Mediterranean fruit fly or Medfly, the ‘world’s worst fruit pest’. First introduced over 100 years ago, the battle against this devastating pest has involved Government, growers and the general public.

This book is designed to provide an accurate but readable account of the fight against fruit fly, incorporating all the …

Fine Root Dynamics In Atlantic White Cedar (Chamaecyparis Thyoides) Wetlands: Patterns Of Ecosystem Development In Natural And Restoration Settings, Harvey Leroy Rodgers Oct 2001

Fine Root Dynamics In Atlantic White Cedar (Chamaecyparis Thyoides) Wetlands: Patterns Of Ecosystem Development In Natural And Restoration Settings, Harvey Leroy Rodgers

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

This work addresses seasonal and successional factors of root dynamics in natural and restoration Atlantic white cedar (AWC) wetlands. Using minirhizotrons, fine root dynamics in a chronosequence of naturally-regenerating and restoration AWC wetlands were measured to compare ecosystem development trends with restoration conditions. A second study was conducted to compare fine root dynamics in AWC wetlands with contrasting hydroperiods. In addition, a technical study was conducted to determine the feasibility of estimating root biomass with indirect minirhizotron measurements.

Root biomass estimates using minirhizotrons were significantly higher in naturally regenerating AWC wetlands and significantly lower in the restoration site relative to …
