Activity Patterns Of Whiptail Lizards (Aspidoscelis) Found In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Guillermo Alvarez Dec 2023

Activity Patterns Of Whiptail Lizards (Aspidoscelis) Found In The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, Guillermo Alvarez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Traditional lizard pitfall traps were modified to allow organisms to escape, while collecting valuable ecological data. Modified camera traps were capable of detecting the same species as traditional traps in a semi-arid environment, without posing the associated mortality risks. Pitfall-camera traps were used to sample the activity of the Side-blotched Lizard (Uta stansburiana) and the Southwestern Fence Lizard (Sceloporus cowlesi) in an urban wetland during four continuous years. Evaluations on activity pattern and the activity overlap between the two species revealed extensive overlap, with minor but significant seasonal shifts mediating coexistence. Traps were also effective at detecting other reptiles, invertebrates, …

Multilevel Phenotypic Integration Of Metabolism And Behavior In House Sparrows And Mice, Tim Salzman Jan 2023

Multilevel Phenotypic Integration Of Metabolism And Behavior In House Sparrows And Mice, Tim Salzman

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Patterns of multilevel variation in behavior, both within and among individuals, raise challenging questions about underlying mechanisms and the selective pressures acting on them. One intriguing hypothesis is that physiology shows parallel multilevel variation, and so might represent a latent trait that integrates multilevel behavioral responses. For example, foraging acquires the fuel needed to maintain metabolism, and in turn, an individual’s metabolism affects expression of foraging, and other, behaviors. Metabolism and behavior thus might coevolve to become integrated traits. Despite the appeal of this hypothesis, numerous investigations into the link between metabolism and behavior have yielded largely equivocal results.

Vircy-Seq : A Protocol For Characterizing Viral Activity, Tyler James Dion Dec 2022

Vircy-Seq : A Protocol For Characterizing Viral Activity, Tyler James Dion

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The main purpose of pharmaceutical production is to produce safe effective medicine for patient use. In an effort to ensure patient safety constant surveillance for viruses takes place. The detection of a viral nucleic acid in a pharmaceutical production setting results in investigations to assess its infectious potential. This is an intensive, expensive process that entails many tests such as the observation of hemadsorption, cytopathic effects (CPE), and more. These tests are typically specific and only capture certain viruses, as factors like CPE can only be observed in some viral species. A new investigational method that is effective on all …

Activity Patterns Among Head-Started Juvenile Alligator Snapping Turtles (Macrochelys Temminckii), Parker R. Golliglee Jan 2022

Activity Patterns Among Head-Started Juvenile Alligator Snapping Turtles (Macrochelys Temminckii), Parker R. Golliglee

MSU Graduate Theses

In contrast to many species of aquatic turtle, Alligator Snapping Turtles (Macrochelys temminckii) are putatively nocturnal. Data supporting this assertion are chiefly anecdotal, however, and two recent studies cast doubt on this generalization. Differences in activity patterns may be related to variability in temperature and photoperiod across the species’ range and may be influenced by ontogenetic changes, as well. To assess this, I equipped juvenile Alligator Snapping Turtles spanning a range of different ages with activity data loggers. I used 4-year-old turtles were to measure latitudinal differences in activity which were reared in hatchery ponds spanning the species’ …

Sex-Specific Personalities In The Purple Marsh Crab, Jillian Sterman, Jessica Barton, Panagiota Delmedico, Samantha Sweeney Jun 2019

Sex-Specific Personalities In The Purple Marsh Crab, Jillian Sterman, Jessica Barton, Panagiota Delmedico, Samantha Sweeney

DePaul Discoveries

Animals are considered to possess personalities when individuals differ in behavior, and these differences are consistent between situations. Several studies have identified personalities in diverse groups but less is known about personality variation between the sexes. In this study, we examined variation in two key personality traits (boldness, activity) in female and male purple marsh crabs (Sesarma reticulatum) using a semi-field approach. Specifically, we measured boldness and activity on two consecutive days using the same behavioral assays during each time point. Consistency (personality) was determined using Kendall’s coefficient of concordance based on Spearman correlation coefficients for each behavior. …

The Effect Of Dietary Fat On Behavior In Mice, Madeline R. Keleher, Rabab Zaidi, Kayna Patel, Amer Ahmed, Carlee Bettler, Cassondra Pavlatos, Shyam Shah, James M. Cheverud Dec 2018

The Effect Of Dietary Fat On Behavior In Mice, Madeline R. Keleher, Rabab Zaidi, Kayna Patel, Amer Ahmed, Carlee Bettler, Cassondra Pavlatos, Shyam Shah, James M. Cheverud

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Purpose Obesity is linked to cognitive dysfunction in humans and rodents, and its effects can be passed on to the next generation. However, the extent of these effects is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a prenatal maternal high-fat diet and an individual high-fat diet in inbred mice. Methods We varied maternal diet and offspring diet to test the hypothesis that a high-fat diet would increase anxiety, reduce activity levels, and impair nest-building. First, we fed a high-fat (HF) or low-fat (LF) diet to genetically identical female Small (SM/J) mice and mated …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Novel Cationic Amphiphiles, Melanie Kusakavitch May 2018

Antimicrobial Activity Of Novel Cationic Amphiphiles, Melanie Kusakavitch

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This project focused on the development of amphiphiles in order to prevent hospital-acquired infections before they have a chance to enter the host, thereby reducing the need for antibiotics. The antibiotic resistance crisis of the 21st century is a dangerous epidemic with global consequences. Therefore, there is a desperate need for novel approaches in antimicrobial research. This would decrease the overall length of stay in hospitals and costs associated with such a stay. In this study, tetracationic amphiphiles with two 12-carbon chains and an aliphatic linker were studied. The MIC value of each amphiphile and strain pair was determined and …

The Role Of Rck/P54 Enzymatic Activity During Hepatitis C Infection, Rachel E. Eager May 2018

The Role Of Rck/P54 Enzymatic Activity During Hepatitis C Infection, Rachel E. Eager

Biological Sciences

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected 30,500 people in the United States alone in 2014. As a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus, the HCV genome facilitates translation and replication of the virus within the host cell. During infection, HCV subverts numerous host proteins to aid in viral production. One such protein is DDX6, a DEAD-box helicase that is associated with the decapping complex and microRNA Induced Silencing Complex (miRISC). Previous studies in our lab have shown that DDX6 is required for HCV expression. Specifically, DDX6 modulates the interaction of miR-122 with the HCV 5’ UTR and promotes stability and replication of the …

Monitoring Of Dung Beetle (Scarabaeidae And Geotrupidae) Activity Along Maryland's Coastal Plain, Patrick Simons, Michael Molina, Mallory A. Hagadorn, Dana L. Price Mar 2018

Monitoring Of Dung Beetle (Scarabaeidae And Geotrupidae) Activity Along Maryland's Coastal Plain, Patrick Simons, Michael Molina, Mallory A. Hagadorn, Dana L. Price

Biology Faculty Publications

Our understanding of how human activities impact insect communities is limited. Dung beetles, well known for the ecosystem services they provide, are faced with many conservation threats, particularly from deforestation and agriculture. Here we used 200-m transects and human-dung—baited pitfall traps to examine dung beetle populations in 7 forests of Maryland's Coastal Plain. We set traps once a month, from May 2014 to April 2015, to determine species presence, abundance, range, and seasonality. We collected 6463 individuals representing 22 species; Janes Island State Park (JISP) had the highest abundance (2705 individuals) and Martinak State Park (MSP) had the highest species …

Parasite-Related Modification Of Multiple Traits In An Isopod Host, Tracey J. Park Aug 2016

Parasite-Related Modification Of Multiple Traits In An Isopod Host, Tracey J. Park

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Parasites are organisms that live on or in hosts, which they typically require to complete their life cycles. Acanthocephalus dirus is an acanthocephalan parasite that exhibits an indirect life cycle that requires two hosts, with a Caecidotea intermedius isopod as the intermediate host and fishes as the definitive hosts, in order to complete its life cycle. Infected C. intermedius individuals have been observed to have altered hiding behavior, in which they have an increased amount of time exposed to predators. Also, infected C. intermedius individuals have demonstrated an increase in activity patterns, which could increase their conspicuousness to visual predators. …

Reintroduction Biology Of Head-Started Ornate Box Turtles, Eric R. Sievers Jan 2015

Reintroduction Biology Of Head-Started Ornate Box Turtles, Eric R. Sievers

MSU Graduate Theses

The ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata) is a prairie-dwelling species that has experienced population declines, especially near the northern edge of its range. In order to provide supporting research for a reintroduction program at the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge in northwestern Illinois, I compared the relative success of different approaches to reintroduction. Specifically, I tested the null hypothesis that reintroduced turtles exhibited equal reintroduction success when, 1) released at a site that is known to support a viable ornate box turtle population, 2) ‘soft-released' in a fenced enclosure at a site where very few ornate box …

Environment, Behavior And Physiology: Do Birds Use Barometric Pressure To Predict Storms?, Creagh W. Breuner, Rachel Seabury Sprague, Stephen Harold Patterson, H. Arthur Woods Jun 2013

Environment, Behavior And Physiology: Do Birds Use Barometric Pressure To Predict Storms?, Creagh W. Breuner, Rachel Seabury Sprague, Stephen Harold Patterson, H. Arthur Woods

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Severe storms can pose a grave challenge to the temperature and energy homeostasis of small endothermic vertebrates. Storms are accompanied by lower temperatures and wind, increasing metabolic expenditure, and can inhibit foraging, thereby limiting energy intake. To avoid these potential problems, most endotherms have mechanisms for offsetting the energetic risks posed by storms. One possibility is to use cues to predict oncoming storms and to alter physiology and behavior in ways that make survival more likely. Barometric pressure declines predictably before inclement weather, and several lines of evidence indicate that animals alter behavior based on changes in ambient pressure. Here …

Turkish Journal of Biology

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the possible antimicrobial and anticancer properties of the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw. (Fontinalaceae). We first obtained 8 different extracts (methanol; chloroform; acetone; ethyl acetate A, B, C, and D) by two different extraction processes. The antimicrobial activity of these extracts was then assessed by using the well diffusion method against 8 bacterial and 7 fungal strains. The results of antimicrobial studies showed that extracts of chloroform, acetone, and ethyl acetate A and C were active against almost all the species tested. The most effective extract was C, which was then …

Latitudinal Variation In Seasonal Activity And Mortality In Ratsnakes (Elaphe Obsoleta), Jinelle H. Sperry, Gabriel Blouin-Demers, Gerardo L.F. Carfagno, Patrick J. Weatherhead

Biology Faculty Publications

The ecology of ectotherms should be particularly affected by latitude because so much of their biology is temperature dependent. Current latitudinal patterns should also be informative about how ectotherms will have to modify their behavior in response to climate change. We used data from a total of 175 adult black ratsnakes (Elaphe obsoleta) radio tracked in Ontario, Illinois, and Texas, a latitudinal distance of > 1500 km, to test predictions about how seasonal patterns of activity and mortality should vary with latitude. Despite pronounced differences in temperatures among study locations, and despite ratsnakes in Texas not hibernating and switching from diurnal …

Individual Differences In Exploratory And Antipredator Behaviour In Juvenile Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu), Kelly L. Smith, Jeffrey Gibson Miner, Daniel D. Wiegmann, Steven P. Newman Dec 2008

Individual Differences In Exploratory And Antipredator Behaviour In Juvenile Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu), Kelly L. Smith, Jeffrey Gibson Miner, Daniel D. Wiegmann, Steven P. Newman

Jeffrey Gibson Miner

The correlation of individual behaviour in different contexts, known as a behavioural syndrome, constrains the optimization of behaviour within each context. Recent studies reveal that the strength of syndromes differs amongst populations and over individual ontogeny. In this study, exploratory behaviour in an unfamiliar environment and behavioural responses to a simulated predator attack in the presence of food were measured in juvenile smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu). The results revealed a syndrome: individuals who actively explored the unfamiliar environment also behaved more boldly in the presence of the model predator. The syndrome implies a tradeoff between collecting information about one's environment …
