Recent phylogenetic works have begun to address long-standing questions regarding the systematics of Campanula (Campanulaceae). Yet, aspects of the evolutionary history, particularly in northwestern North America, remain unresolved. Thus, our primary goal in this study was to infer the phylogenetic positions of northwestern Campanula species within the greater Campanuloideae tree. We combined new sequence data from 5 markers (atpB, rbcL,matK, and trnL-F regions of the chloroplast and the nuclear ITS) representing 12 species ofCampanula with previously published datasets for worldwide campanuloids, allowing us to include approximately 75% of North American Campanuleae in a phylogenetic …

The Influence Of Inoculated And Native Ectomycorrhizal Fungi On Morphology, Physiology And Survival Of American Chestnut, Jenise Bauman, Carolyn H. Keiffer, Shiv Hiremath

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of five different species of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi on root colonization of native fungi on putatively blight resistant chestnut hybrids (Castanea dentata x C. mollissima) in a reclaimed mine site in central Ohio. The five species were Hebeloma crustuliniforme, Laccaria bicolor, Scleroderma polyrhizum, Amanita rubescens, and Suillus luteus. We used a combination of DNA sequencing of the ITS region and phylogenetic analyses to indentify fungi found on roots after 12 and 18 months in the field. Members of the neutrophilic iron-oxidizing candidate class Zetaproteobacteria have predominantly been found at sites of microbially mediated iron oxidation in marine environments around the Pacific Ocean. Eighty-four full-length (>1,400-bp) and 48 partial-length Zetaproteobacteria small-subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequences from five novel clone libraries, one novel Zetaproteobacteria isolate, and the GenBank database were analyzed to assess the biodiversity of this burgeoning class of the Proteobacteria and to investigate its biogeography between three major sampling regions in the Pacific Ocean: Loihi Seamount, the Southern Mariana Trough, and the Tonga Arc. A novel hydrothermal field has been discovered at the base of Lōihi Seamount, Hawaii, at 5000 mbsl. Geochemical analyses demonstrate that ‘FeMO Deep’, while only 0.2 °C above ambient seawater temperature, derives from a distal, ultra-diffuse hydrothermal source. FeMO Deep is expressed as regional seafloor seepage of gelatinous iron- and silica-rich deposits, pooling between and over basalt pillows, in places over a meter thick. The system is capped by mm to cm thick hydrothermally derived iron-oxyhydroxide- and manganese-oxide-layered crusts. Timber management, especially clear-cut logging, dramatically alters forest ecosystems. In temperate conifer forests of the Pacific Northwest, succession following deforestation is a slow process, lasting several decades for early and mid-successional stages and several hundred years for late maturity and old growth stages. Despite the history of logging in the region and the importance of these forests to wildlife, it is not well understood how animal communities respond to forest disturbance, particularly over successional gradients. High Northern latitudes are predicted to change considerably in forthcoming climate scenarios, and empirical evidence detailing a species' capacity to cope with extreme variability is needed. Tundra plants make for an excellent study because their genetic histories were impacted by the dramatic transitions of historic glacial and interglacial ages. Here, thousands of restriction site-associated DNA (RAD) markers from geographically isolated Alaskan (Arctic) and Coloradan (Alpine) Bistorta vivipara (Polygonaceae) populations are compared in an investigation of evolutionary response to rapid climate change. Current global conditions are leading to increased numbers of harmful macroalgal blooms, which have detrimental effects on the ecosystems in which they occur. Macroalgae produce harmful chemicals such as ROS (reactive oxygen species) and dopamine. These chemicals may be produced in high quantities in response to environmental stresses, such as increasing water temperature, emersion, hypoxia, and then subsequently introduced into the aquatic environment. In Washington State, little work has been done to quantify ROS accumulation by macroalgae, or investigate oxidant impacts on invertebrates.
