For decades it has been recognized that neutrophilic Fe-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) are associated with hydrothermal venting of Fe(II)-rich fluids associated with seamounts in the world's oceans. The evidence was based almost entirely on the mineralogical remains of the microbes, which themselves had neither been brought into culture or been assigned to a specific phylogenetic clade. We have used both cultivation and cultivation-independent techniques to study Fe-rich microbial mats associated with hydrothermal venting at Loihi Seamount, a submarine volcano.

We surveyed the benthic community structure and population density of the long-spined sea urchinDiadema antillarum on the shallow fore-reefs of the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, Caribbean Costa Rica, in September and October 2004. In zones with high densities of D. antillarum (>0.6 ind. m–2), the cover of non-calcareous macroalgae, known coral competitors, was low and that of live coral was high, whereas the opposite occurred in zones with low densities of D. antillarum (D. antillarum density was not related to the coverage of calcareous macroalgae, which are not viewed as coral competitors. First Report Of Oecophora Bractella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae) In North America, Merrill A. Peterson, Eric H. Lagasa, Steven Passoa, Gaden S. Robinson, David Holden

The first report of Oecophora bractella (L.) from North America is given, based on collection records from Washington and British Columbia. This species is found throughout Europe, but is generally rare to uncommon through most of its range. Larvae occur on rotting wood in association with certain fungi and are not expected to reach pest status. Adults were captured at nine locations, with the first record from Seattle, WA in 1998. This first record and some of the subsequent records are from sites immediately adjacent to or associated with international shipping routes. Other sites with O. bractella are from residential …
