Waterfowl Of North Dakota, Paul A. Johnsgard Jun 1953

Waterfowl Of North Dakota, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

North Dakota is a great waterfowl state. Within its borders more ducks nest every summer than in any other state. Each fall thousands of hunters share in the excellent duck and goose hunting, and every school child is aware of the immense flocks of migrating waterfowl that are such a common sight. This booklet was written not only to serve as a guide in identifying these birds, but also to point out something of their habits and importance.

Depositor's note (June 2008): Paul seemed delighted when I presented him the source copy of this little pamphlet, which I had found …

Rearing Calves On Ten Gallons Of Milk, L C. Snook May 1953

Rearing Calves On Ten Gallons Of Milk, L C. Snook

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Only a limited number of calves are reared on dairy farms which sell whole milk. At current prices, it is only a very good calf which is worth more than the milk it would consume, and as a result, the heifer calves from thousands of productive cows are each year slaughtered at birth. In the past the whole milk supplier was able to obtain his herd replacements from farmers in the more distant dairying districts who, of necessity sold butterfat and could rear calves on separated milk.

Layout Of A Dairy Premise, A E. Baker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

As the average dairyman spends a large proportion of his working time in the milking shed throughout the year, careful attention to the layout of these premises will give good returns in time saved, and will enable the task of milking to be carried out efficiently and with a minimum of discomfort.

A Comparison Of Formulae In The Manufacture Of Ice Milk, Glen Wilford Sargent May 1953

A Comparison Of Formulae In The Manufacture Of Ice Milk, Glen Wilford Sargent

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ice milk is not a new product in the ice cream industry. Rather it is one that has gained only little popularity, except in the preparation of "malts" and "milk shakes"; however, within the last decade the gallonage of ice milk produced has more than doubled.

Ice milk has been relatively unimportant because of the difficulty of obtaining a product with acceptable quality. In recent years progressive ice milk manufacturers and research workers have discovered new ingredients and processing procedure that seem to produce favorable results.

This low-fat product has several merits that justify its recent popularity, such as low …

The Influence Of Amounts Of Propionibacterium Shermanii On Eye Formation And Flavor Of Swiss Cheese, Dan G. Turner May 1953

The Influence Of Amounts Of Propionibacterium Shermanii On Eye Formation And Flavor Of Swiss Cheese, Dan G. Turner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Swiss cheese has been rightly called "king of the cheeses." It has been prized the world over for its stately appearance and sweet "hazelnut" flavor. In grading Swiss cheese, these two things, appearance and flavor, are important considerations in determining the cheese score. Appearance is judges according to the number, type, and size of eyes present in the cheese, with color and body and texture also considered. Flavor is judges according to the degree of sweetness and the amount and kinds of off flavors present.

In the past, there has been considerable variation in the quality of the Swiss cheese produces. …

A Note On Chronic Footrot Of Dairy Cattle Mar 1953

A Note On Chronic Footrot Of Dairy Cattle

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

With the advent of treatment with ™ sodium sulphamezathine for footrot of dairy cattle, many of the troubles associated with this condition have largely been overcome.

However, the importance of early treatment is sometimes overlooked and Fig. 1.—Chronic footrot caused the ragged growth of new bone shown in the two lower pictures. At the top are the bones of a healthy foot from an animal of similar size. some farmers are inclined to blame the drug when treatment has been commenced after the animal has been affected for some time and a cure does not result. Why treatment is not …

Effect Of Delaware River Flow On Oysters In The Natural Seed Beds Of Delaware Bay, Carol Coughlin Feb 1953

Effect Of Delaware River Flow On Oysters In The Natural Seed Beds Of Delaware Bay, Carol Coughlin

Reports

The Delaware River and Estuary flow through or border four states, New York,11 New Jersey"' Pennsylvania and Delaware. The use of their waters is intimately connected with the economies of each State. The use, however, is varied and different for each State. Any major change in the conditions of the river and estuary, while it may benefit one or more States, may also create conditions detrimental to others. The river from headwaters to Marcus Hook furnishes water used mostly.for domestic and industrial purposes. In the lower part of the river and estuary is the environment that supports the oyster, a …

Growth And Respiratory Studies Of Saccaromyces Cerevisiae In The Presence Of Selenium, Robert M. Pengra Jan 1953

Growth And Respiratory Studies Of Saccaromyces Cerevisiae In The Presence Of Selenium, Robert M. Pengra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occurrence of selenium in certain soils of the United States and its detrimental effect upon livestock pastured on or fed forage from these areas has been well established. Selenium poisoning will not be reviewed here as several excellent reviews have been published (1, 2, 3). Studies on the metabolism of selenium by Sac-charomyces cerevisiae have been reported by Potter and Elvehjem (4), Lardy and Moxon (5), and Fels and Cheldelin (6, 7, 8). An attempt has been made in this thesis to repeat and enlarge on some of these studies. While this investigation may contribute information on the selenium …

Thin-Shelled Eggs, R H. Morris Jan 1953

Thin-Shelled Eggs, R H. Morris

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Thin-shelled eggs are responsible for a loss of thousands of pounds annually to the West Australian poultry industry. To a very large extent the flock owner can control the percentage of thin-shelled eggs laid by his flock and this article outlines how this control can be exercised.
