Statewide Survey Of Boat-Based Recreational Fishing In Western Australia 2015/16, Karina L. Ryan, Norman G. Hall, Eva K. Lai, Claire B. Smallwood, S.M Taylor, Brent Stephen

Fisheries research reports

The statewide survey of boat-based recreational fishing includes three components: (i) off-site Phone Surveys (encompassing an initial Screening Survey, a longitudinal Phone-Diary Survey, and Post-Enumeration Surveys); (ii) on-site Boat Ramp Surveys; and (iii) a Remote Camera Survey.

Fisheries research reports

Remotely operated cameras can be used for cost-efficient monitoring of recreational fishing activities. This report provides an overview of the current usage of cameras in recreational fishery assessments by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Since 2006, 32 remotely operated cameras have been installed at 26 locations throughout Western Australia and currently 28 cameras are in use.

Across The Indian Ocean: A Remarkable Example Of Trans-Oceanic Dispersal In An Austral Mygalomorph Spider, Sophie E. Harrison, Mark S. Harvey, Steve J.B. Cooper, Andrew D. Austin, Michael G. Rix

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The Migidae are a family of austral trapdoor spiders known to show a highly restricted and disjunct distribution pattern. Here, we aim to investigate the phylogeny and historical biogeography of the group, which was previously thought to be vicariant in origin, and examine the biogeographic origins of the genus Moggridgea using a dated multi-gene phylogeny. Moggridgea specimens were sampled from southern Australia and Africa, and Bertmainus was sampled from Western Australia. Sanger sequencing methods were used to generate a robust six marker molecular dataset consisting of the nuclear genes 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS rRNA, XPNPEP3 and H3 and the …

Assessment Of Applications For Authorisations For Aquaculture And Pearling In Coastal Waters Of Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development Aug 2017

Assessment Of Applications For Authorisations For Aquaculture And Pearling In Coastal Waters Of Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development

Fisheries administrative guidelines

Under s.246 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA) and under s.24 of the Pearling Act 1990 (PA) (collectively, the Acts), the Minister for Fisheries (Minister) may issue guidelines for the administration or enforcement of the Acts.

This Administrative Guideline (Guideline) aims to streamline the process for assessment of applications under s.92 and s.97 of the FRMA for aquaculture licences and leases and under s.23 of the PA for pearl oyster farm leases; and certain applications to vary a pearling lease or aquaculture licence.1 The Guideline is intended to provide guidance to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional …

Demographic Performance Of Brownlip Abalone : Exploration Of Wild And Cultured Harvest Potential, Lachlan W.S. Strain, Alexander Hesp, Frank Fabris, Anthony M. Hart May 2017

Demographic Performance Of Brownlip Abalone : Exploration Of Wild And Cultured Harvest Potential, Lachlan W.S. Strain, Alexander Hesp, Frank Fabris, Anthony M. Hart

Fisheries research reports

This research provides the most comprehensive evaluation of Brownlip abalone (Haliotis conicopora) biology and fisheries assessment to date, thereby laying a solid foundation for future management of the Brownlip abalone fishery in Western Australia (WA). For wild populations, it has provided the most reliable estimates of natural and fishing mortality, size composition and the first to model growth throughout all stages of life.

Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (Ebfm) Risk Assessment Of The Western Australian Abalone Managed Industry, F J. Webster, B Wise, Anthony M. Hart Apr 2017

Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (Ebfm) Risk Assessment Of The Western Australian Abalone Managed Industry, F J. Webster, B Wise, Anthony M. Hart

WA Marine Stewardship Council report series

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the Western Australian (WA) Abalone Managed Fishery (AMF) and the outcomes from the 2015 ecological risk assessment of this fishery. The AMF targets three species of abalone greenlip (Haliotis laevigata), brownlip (H. conicopora) and Roe’s abalone (H. roei). Greenlip and brownlip abalone are primarily targeted on the south coast of WA, while Roe’s abalone is primarily targeted on the West Coast. Commercial fishing for abalone in WA has been undertaken since 1964.

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Western Australia’S Commercially Important Sharks, Matias Braccini, R. Mcauley, Alastair Harry Mar 2017

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Western Australia’S Commercially Important Sharks, Matias Braccini, R. Mcauley, Alastair Harry

Fisheries research reports

This project took advantage of an unprecedented deployment of acoustic receiver infrastructure around the Western Australian coast to monitor a large number of sharks implanted with acoustic tags. This research was undertaken to better understand the temporal and spatial dynamics of commercially-important sharks in Western Australia, which has enabled a re-evaluation of the risks of cryptic sources of catch and bycatch to dusky and sandbar shark stocks and development of population simulation models with which to test the implications of spatially-different histories of fishery management, as well as future spatial-management arrangements for whiskery and gummy sharks stocks.

Fisheries research reports

This document presents information for the Western Rock Lobster Fishery for MSC re-certification process in 2017.

Marine Stewardship Council Full Assessment Report Western Australian Abalone Managed Fishery, Anthony M. Hart, Lachlan W.S. Strain, Alexander Hesp, E. Fisher, F J. Webster, S. J. Brand-Gardner, S. Walters

WA Marine Stewardship Council report series

This report provides a comprehensive description of the Abalone Managed Fishery (AMF) in Western Australia (WA) and contains information relevant to assist with the assessment of this fishery against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard (v2.0) for sustainable fishing. Fishers in the AMF harvest three species; Roe’s abalone (Haliotis roei), Greenlip abalone (H. laevigata) and Brownlip abalone (H. conicopora), through hand collection by diving in shallow waters off the south-western and southern coasts of WA.
