This experiment was carried out to evaluate the role of vitamin E in decreasing the toxic effect of digoxin. Electrocardiographic recordings of New Zealand rabbits which were treated with digoxin-only or digoxin+vitamin E were used. Recordings were obtained before and 24 hours after treatments. It was found that digoxin-only treatment caused a sinusoidal tachicardia without changing the durations or amplitudes of any wave on the trace. However, digoxin+vitamin E treatment did not produce any increase in heart rate. It was concluded that vitamin E injection along with digoxin injection might lower the toxic effect of digoxin. More studies are needed …
An Update On The Biological Control Of Rabbits, Stuart Wheeler
An Update On The Biological Control Of Rabbits, Stuart Wheeler
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
When myxomatosis was introduced into Western Australia in the early 1950s, farmers, pastoralists and government alike thought it was an answer to the rabbit problem.
The disease was devastatingly effective in the short term and initially had a 99 per cent kill rate. With time, the virus declined in strength, and the surviving rabbits have multiplied.
There have been many recent reports about new forms of biological control for rabbits and potential improvements in old ones.
This article summarises each of the prospective methods and improvements, and assesses the potential usefulness of each.
Rabbits North Of Carnarvon, D R. King
Rabbits North Of Carnarvon, D R. King
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In Westeern Australia rabbits are mainly a pest along the south-western coastal parts of the State, but there are populations north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Rabbits after crossing the Nullarbour plain from South Australia and colonising the South-West of the State, were reported to have reached the west coast near Geraldton by 1912 and then spread northwards.
There is little information on the biologhy of rabbits in the northan parts of their range, but pastoralists in some areas are concerned about erosion and damage to vegetation on their stations when rabbits reach high numbers.
The Agricultural Protection Board undertook …
Myxomatosis In Western Australia, D R. King, S. H. Wheeler
Myxomatosis In Western Australia, D R. King, S. H. Wheeler
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Since myxomatosis was introduced to Western Australia in the early 1950s rabbit plagues have ceased. However, myxomatosis has not proven to be the whole answer to the rabit problem.
Rabits continue to damage crops and pastures in many areas and resurgences of rabbit populations are reported from time to time.
Drs D.R. King and S. H. Wheeler of the Agricultural Protection Board's research section have been studying the way myxomatosis epidemics occur and spread in rabbit populations in a range of Western Australian environments. This research will provide data for planning effective control strategies intergrating the various control options available …
Rabbit Kitten Survival In The South-West, D R. King
Rabbit Kitten Survival In The South-West, D R. King
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In the South-West of Western Australis reliable winter rains allow the rabbit breeding season to extend through winter and spring, and thus a large number of kittens are produced each year.
Studies on the biology of rabbits at Cape Naturaliste (270 kilometres south-west of Perth) and Chidlow (40 kilometres east of Perth in the Datling Range) have shown that at these sites each doe produces about 30 and 27 kittens respectively a year. If all these youg rabbits survived, there would be a 15-fold increase in numbers. Within a short time the State would be covered "wall to wall" by …
How Rabbit Poisoning Methods Work, S H. Wheeler
How Rabbit Poisoning Methods Work, S H. Wheeler
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
While the "rabbit plauges" of the past are a distant memory for most farmers, rabbit numbers must still be controlled in many parts of Western Australia. Rabit control techniques rely heavily on poisoning, which given the right conditions can kill a high percentage of rabbits at risk.
Recent research by the Agricultural Protection Board has been aimed at determining how different poisons, baits and poisoning methods work. By knowing in detail how each method works and what influences its results, we can choose the best control method for a particular place and time, avoid costly failures, and increase the effectiveness …

Development Of A Selective Bait For Rabbits, A J. Oliver, S. H. Wheeler
Development Of A Selective Bait For Rabbits, A J. Oliver, S. H. Wheeler
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
It has long been recognised that a means of killing rabbits selectively in the presence of stock would be a major advance in rabbit control. It would enable a whole farm to be treated for rabbit control at one time, saving operational costs and cutting down reinfestation of rabbits into treated areas from untreated areas.
A literature search and some pilot trials indicated that indandione derivatives were more toxic to rabbits than to ruminants.
Pindone (2- pivalyl-l,3-indandione) was selected for evaluation.
Fumigation And Rabbit Control, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Fumigation And Rabbit Control, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Fumigation has been a valuable tool in Australian rabbit control for over 70 years, because of its economy and efficiency compared with methods such as shooting and trapping.
Even now, while it is not as economical as 'one-shot' baiting, fumigation remains a valuable initial control effort because it is not affected by season and does not require shifting of stock.

Myxomatosis : Its Decline As A Killer, C D. Gooding
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ALTHOUGH nearly every farmer in Western Australia is familiar with myxomatosis, very few landowners really understand the factor causing the disease to spread or, just as importantly, why the severity of the disease is declining.

THERE is probably no more distressing sight to orchardists' eyes than two or three hundred young fruit trees that have been damaged by rabbits.
Rabbit Increase : A Warning, A R. Tomlinson
Rabbit Increase : A Warning, A R. Tomlinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE increase in rabbits which has become apparent in many parts of our agricultural areas is a warning to those who considered the problem solved by myxomatosis that these pests are still present and are quite capable of building up to a major menace again, unless they are continually and effectively controlled.

THE effects of the very wet winter are no longer being felt in vermin control activities in most of Western Australia and they have returned to normal.
Attack The Rabbit At Home : Destroy Warrens And Harbourage, J S. Crawford
Attack The Rabbit At Home : Destroy Warrens And Harbourage, J S. Crawford
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Effective rabbit destruction often calls for a carefully worked out control programme consisting of poisoning, fumigating and warren and harbourage destruction.
Possibly the most effective means of not only controlling rabbits but ultimately eradicating them from holdings is the destruction of warrens and harbourage.
One Shot Baiting, C D. Gooding, L. A. Harrison
One Shot Baiting, C D. Gooding, L. A. Harrison
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE Agriculture Protection Board introduced the first of its contract poisoning schemes in 1955 in the lower South-West when three units undertook the first "1080" poisoning for farmers in Western Australia.
The originators of one-shot baiting describe this new technique and explain how it should be used for best results on the farm.
Rabbit Fumigation, C D. Gooding
Rabbit Fumigation, C D. Gooding
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Not all poisons act by absorption from the alimentary tract or through the skin, the fumigants are a big group of poisons used in pest control which act on the animal after being absorbed through the lungs.
FUMIGATION as it is now used in Western Australia is not always an economical way of treating whole farm properties. It should only be used on its own in areas where it is impossible to use other more permanent methods such as warren destruction.

SINCE the introduction of the "1080" Poisoning Unit Scheme in 1955 by the Agriculture Protection Board reasonable control of rabbit numbers has been obtained.
Besides this many important side effects have resulted.
Poisoning Rabbits From The Air, C D. Gooding
Poisoning Rabbits From The Air, C D. Gooding
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
AERIAL baiting gives spectacular kills of rabbits in country which cannot be effectively treated by conventional means, and has been widely adopted in New Zealand and other States in Australia.
Here Mr. Gooding reports on developments in aerial baiting in Victoria, and suggests practical applications in Western Australia.
Vermin Symposium Report : Wanted : A New Approach To Rabbit Control, A R. Tomlinson
Vermin Symposium Report : Wanted : A New Approach To Rabbit Control, A R. Tomlinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE main reason why rabbits have not increased as rapidly as their amazing capabilities might have led people to expect has been a series of years not suitable for full breeding.
This has been more important than myxomatosis and "1080". This was one of the thoughts taken away by those who attended the rabbit control symposium held in Perth recently.
The Success Of The Rabbit 'Killer' Trials, A R. Tomlinson
The Success Of The Rabbit 'Killer' Trials, A R. Tomlinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
SUCCESS well beyond what was anticipated has been achieved in a two year trial of a modified version of the rabbit "killer" method.
In the "killer" method, trained officers are employed to kill rabbits instead of to inspect and supervise the activities of farmers and, in fact, these officers do all the actual work of destruction.
This system was advocated by the W.A. Royal Commission which reported on Vermin Control in this State in 1944, and it was used successfully in New Zealand.
These trials were applied only to poisoning and not to overall destruction measures. The main object was …
Hit Rabbits This Winter : It Will Check Breeding And Give More Valuable Feed For Summer Grazing, C Marshall
Hit Rabbits This Winter : It Will Check Breeding And Give More Valuable Feed For Summer Grazing, C Marshall
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
NOW that the current summer "1080" Rabbit Drive is drawing to a close, it is time we considered our future plans.
I am afraid that in the past most farmers have relied far too much on summer control as the complete answer to rabbit destruction and that this reliance has increased considerably following the introduction of "1080" poison, plus the valuable assistance received from the myxomatosis virus.
Free Feeding For The Control Of Rabbits, C Marshall
Free Feeding For The Control Of Rabbits, C Marshall
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
IN common with most other farm work, the control of rabbits calls for a high degree of skill, patience and perseverance.
There is no short cut to success, and if results are required we must be prepared to give of our best.
Failures of control works are experienced at various times, and the reasons can generally be traced back to something we have failed to do or some short cut we have tried to take.
However, we should not lose heart from one failure. During normal farming procedure, if a farmer's crop fails he does not give up planting in …
Rabbit Control In 1960, C Marshall
Rabbit Control In 1960, C Marshall
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
IN the year 1859, an enthusiastic sportsman in Victoria took delivery from the clipper "Lightning" of a small consignment of wild European rabbits which he joyfully released on his estate at Barwon Park, near Geelong, in order to assure himself of some rough shooting.
He was not the only rabbit importer on record—tame rabbits were brought into Australia before and after 1895 and doubtless there were other importations of the wild rabbit—but he is generally credited—or discredited—with having triggered off the rabbit plague.
