Improvement Of Beef Cattle Through Breeding Methods. Summary Of Results From Regional Project Nc-1, Keith E. Gregory
Improvement Of Beef Cattle Through Breeding Methods. Summary Of Results From Regional Project Nc-1, Keith E. Gregory
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
The major purpose of this project is to obtain information that beef cattle breeders can use to make maximum genetic improvement in all traits of economic value in beef cattle. The major objectives of NC-1 are the following: (1) to determine the traits of economic importance in beef cattle: (2) to assess their relative value; (3) to develop reliable methods and procedures for measuring and evaluating them; (4) to obtain estimates of their heritabilities; (5) to obtain estimates of the genetic and phenotypic correlations among all economically important traits; (6) to evaluate the effects and uses of inbreeding and heterosis; …

The Sexual Behavior And Systematic Position Of The Hooded Merganser, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Sexual Behavior And Systematic Position Of The Hooded Merganser, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
It has been over 15 years since Delacour and Mayr (1945) first urged that the mergansers (Mergus)and the goldeneye-Bufflehead group (Bucephala) be merged into a single tribe (Mergini) rather than being maintained in separate subfamilies (Aythyinae and Merginae). Their reasons for this change were several, and included such points as the similarities in the downy young, female color patterns, occurrence of wild hybrids between the two genera, and tracheal structure. Indeed, except for the shape of the bill in these two groups there is no good means of distinguishing the two subfamilies. As Delacour and Mayr pointed out, bill shape …
A Histological Study Of The Postnatal Development Of The Bovine Testis, R. G. Fossland, A. B. Schultze
A Histological Study Of The Postnatal Development Of The Bovine Testis, R. G. Fossland, A. B. Schultze
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
A limited number of detailed studies on the development of the bovine testis from birth to sexual maturity have been reported. Further study of bovine testis development appears desirable to furnish additional observations and to note variations that may occur during the developmental process. Information on the process of spermatogenesis should furnish a basis for experimental work designed to promote increased spermatogenic activity in the postpubertal testis as well as for work directed toward promoting complete spermatogenesis at an earlier than usual age. This report is a study of the histological picture of the testes from 56 bulls varying from …

Swine Brucellosis: How You Can Eradicate It
Swine Brucellosis: How You Can Eradicate It
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Swine brucellosis is a bacterial disease that affects swine, other domestic animals, and humans. Severe exposure causes the disease in cattle, dogs, cats, and poultry. The disease can spread from one species of animal to another, and from animals to humans. However, it does not normally spread from one human to another, or from humans to animals. The disease costs the swine industry about $10 million a year. Losses due to human infection cannot be estimated. Although human brucellosis, or undulant fever, is difficult to diagnose-especially in mild cases-a total of 892 cases were documented in the United States in …
Components Of Variance Associated With Milk And Fat Records Of Artificially Sired Holstein Daughters, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. H. Wadell, C. R. Henderson
Components Of Variance Associated With Milk And Fat Records Of Artificially Sired Holstein Daughters, L. Dale Van Vleck, L. H. Wadell, C. R. Henderson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Components of variance are estimated for the three-way classification analysis of variance of DHIA reported first and second milk and fat records of artificially sired Holstein cows and of Owner-Sampler reported milk and fat records of artificially sired Holstein cows. The total variance of milk and fat records is partitioned into the following components with the approximate percent of total variance: sire, 6%; year-season, 2%; herd, 30%; sire by year-season, 0%; sire by herd, 1–2%; herd by year-season, 6–8%; sire by herd by year-season, 1–7%; and residual, 50%.
Evolutionary Relationships Among The North American Mallards, Paul A. Johnsgard
Evolutionary Relationships Among The North American Mallards, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
A comparative morphological, behavioral, and electrophoretic study was undertaken on six populations of North American mallards that are currently considered by the A.O.U. Check-list to comprise four species and two additional subspecies. These include Anas p. platyrhynchos, A. d. diaxi, A. d. novimexicana, A. f. fulvigula, A. f. maculosa, and A. rubripes. These forms are essentially allopatric in their breeding distributions, with the major exception of A. p. platyrhynchos and A. rubripes, which overlap throughout a several-hundred-mile zone in east-central United States.
Geographic ranges and population sizes are estimated, and evidence is presented to indicate that the …
Wintering Distribution Changes In Mallards And Black Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard
Wintering Distribution Changes In Mallards And Black Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Through the use of data compiled by the Audubon Society's annual Christmas Counts, an attempt has been made to trace the distributional changes of wintering Mallards and Black Ducks in the eastern states from 1900 to the present. During this period the Black Duck has increased relative to the Mallard in few if any states (the Great Lakes region), whereas the Mallard has increased nearly everywhere else (except in the extreme northeast), particularly in the southern coastal states. Deforestation and changes in land use are sug- gested as probable reasons for this trend, which is not likely to be reversed.

Correspondence About "Evolutionary Relationships Among The North American Mallards", Allan R. Phillips, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
The confusing leading article of the 1961 Auk calls for comment. Despite his title, "Evolutionary Relationships among the North American Mallards," the author discusses primarily geographic distributions, population sizes, egg-white proteins( !), and certain behavioral patterns. Maps are based on ". . . the literature, personal communications, and the major United States collections," " . and from additional sight and specimen records available to me"; yet only two museums other than Cornell University are mentioned in the acknowledgments. These maps show many records of platyrhynchos far to the south; sometimes (Figure 1) the reader must search hard for any hint …
The Taxonomy Of The Anatidae—A Behavioural Analysis, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Taxonomy Of The Anatidae—A Behavioural Analysis, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
Delacour & Mayr's (1945) classic revision of the Anatidae took waterfowl behaviour into account to a much larger degree than had any previous classifications of the group. However, their utilization of behaviour was primarily at the tribal and generic levels, and no real attempt was made to use behaviour for determining intrageneric relationships. Thus far only Lorenz (1941, 1951-1953) has seriously attempteq this with waterfowl, and his analysis of the relationships within the genus Anas (sensu Delacour & Mayr) has provided a remarkable insight into the evolution of this group. I have attempted to expand Lorenz's behavioural delineation of relationships …
49th Annual Feeders Day Progress Report: Improving Beef Production Through Nutrition And Management, E. F. Frolik, A. W. Epp
49th Annual Feeders Day Progress Report: Improving Beef Production Through Nutrition And Management, E. F. Frolik, A. W. Epp
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The science of nutrition has come into its own in the last few years. Greater recognition of the value of protein, the identification of new nutrients and the awareness of the importance of nutrition to health have been part of this trend.
In this new era in nutrition, beef has been found to be one of our most nutritious foods. Not only does it contain a generous amount of protein, but its protein is of high quality, too. In addition, beef supplies important minerals such as iron and phosphorus, which contribute to healthy blood and sturdy bones. The essential B …
Relation Of Heart Girth To Weight In Holsteins And Jerseys, H. P. Davis, W. W. Swett, W. R. Harvey
Relation Of Heart Girth To Weight In Holsteins And Jerseys, H. P. Davis, W. W. Swett, W. R. Harvey
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
Body weight is the one measurement most extensively used to evaluate growth, condition, and value for beef, and as a basis for calculating feed requirements for cattle. Weight can be determined readily by scales but unfortunately scales of a capacity adequate for weighing cattle are not always available. Thus there is a real need for a basis of estimating weight from some body measurement that can be obtained easily and at a minimum of cost and time. It is the aim of this study to utilize additional data now available to increase further the accuracy and reliability of estimating weight …

Notes On Sanguinicola Davisi (Trematoda: Sanguinicolidae) In The Gills Of Trout, H. S. Davis, Glenn L. Hoffman, E. W. Surber
United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications
In 1953 the late Dr. Davis recorded the presence of an unnamed trematode from the gill blood vessels of fingerling cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) and fingerling steelhead trout (Salmo gairdneri) at the Alsea Hatchery and in yearling rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) at the Oakridge Hatchery, both of the Oregon State Game Commission. Subsequently, two blood flukes, Sanguinicola davisi and S. klamathensis, were described from trout by Wales (1958). The present species was determined to be S. davisi by one of us (GLH). This report supplements data reported by Davis (1953) and Wales (1958). …

Mortality Of Eastern Brook Trout Caused By Plerocercoids (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea: Diphyllobothriidae) In The Heart And Viscera, Glenn L. Hoffman, C. E. Dunbar
United States Fish and Wildlife: Staff Publications
It is well known that migrating helminth larvae do a great amount of damage to the host. Often, however, the host is relatively large and the damage done by few larvae is not serious. When the host is very small the mechanical damage, at least, must be proportionately greater for each larva present. An unusual case of mortality of small brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) roughly 2 to 4 inches long was brought to our attention. Examination of the mortalities, as well as survivors, revealed relatively large diphyllobothrid larvae (fig. 1) in the chambers of the heart, liver, pericardial …
