Influence Of Fertilizer Rate On Swollen Stem Formation (“Bulbing”) And Vitamin C Content In Different Kohlrabi Cultivars, Mark Iradukunda, Paul E. Read
Honors Theses
Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea Gongylodes Group) is a vegetable crop found in the Brassicaceae, and it is rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C. Vitamin C helps in oxidative damage repair and strengthens the immune system, so exploring vitamin C sources may contribute to improving human health. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of different fertilizer rates on kohlrabi yield, in terms of the swollen stem and the vitamin C content, and if those effects are similar in different kohlrabi cultivars. In this greenhouse study, we fertilized four potted kohlrabi cultivars with a common water-soluble greenhouse fertilizer …

Growing Cucumbers In Protected Cultivation In Western Australia, John Burt
All other publications
There are over 20 growers who produce cucumbers under protected cultivation in Western Australia, ranging from Manjimup in the South-West to Geraldton and Carnarvon. They mainly grow these crops hydroponically in greenhouses. There is also some production under shadecloth and some crops are grown in soil. There are two types of cucumbers grown under protected cultivation. The Continental or burpless cucumber is the main type of cucumber and has long fruit, whereas the Lebanese (mini) cucumber has shorter fruit. Compared with field cucumbers, these two types are seedless and do not require pollination to produce fruits. To ensure they are …

Horticultural Studies 1999, Michael D. Richardson, John R. Clark
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Horticultural Studies 1999 is the second edition of a Research Series dedicated to horticultural programs in the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture and the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. This publication summarizes research, extension, and educational activities that serve horticultural industries and interest groups in Arkansas. The goals of this publication are to provide relevant information to the growers and end-users of horticulture crops in Arkansas and to inform the citizens of Arkansas and the surrounding region of activities related to horticulture.

Horticultural Studies 1998, John R. Clark, Michael D. Richardson
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Horticulture connects with people in many ways including an enhanced awareness concerning the importance of fruits and vegetables in our diet. The health benefits of such a diet is gaining wide recognition throughout the public and will likely provide tremendous opportunities for research, education and business development. Significant faculty additions and programmatic efforts were made to the university’s fruit and vegetable programs in 1998.

Agriculture reports
This workshop grew out of a conversation between Maurice Barnes, a Trayning farmer and member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Dryland Research Institute, and Steve Porritt, the officer in charge of the Dryland Research Institute at Merredin. Maurice was interested in the idea of posing the question 'What would agriculture be like if we had known as much about this landscape in 1829 as we know now?', to a group of farmers and others interested in the central wheatbelt and its future. Maurice saw this question as a first step toward achieving some shared vision for the future …

Trials : 88BY26, 88PE34, 88MD35
Control of Rhizoctonia solani infection of potato stems and daughter tubers was demonstrated by preplanting applications of tolclofos-methyl (RIZOLEX TM) to either cut or round seed tubers. Yield of tubers from cut seed treated with Rizolex was increased over that of cut seed cured before planting bu not when seed was cut and planted the same day. Crops grown from round seed treated with Rizolex yielded higher than from untreated round seed.
Surface sterilization of seed tubers with Sodium hypochlorite was effective in reducing stem damage but not in reducing daughter tuber sclerotes. This indicates …

Trial 86KA71
Location: Private farm 'Monalta' - south-east of Katanning.
As outlined by S. Flecker in the 1987 summary for this trial, the expected result of the research is that the feeding value of burr medic pastures will be greater than the feeding value of sub. clover and barrel medic pasture, particularly over the dry summer/autumn period.
