Sustainable Agricultural Management And Landscaping Through Agroforestry And Permaculture Case Study: Northern Malta, Shawn Sammy Vella
Sustainable Agricultural Management And Landscaping Through Agroforestry And Permaculture Case Study: Northern Malta, Shawn Sammy Vella
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The farming industry in Malta is facing severe challenges. Many small patches of arable land are being abandoned following land use conflicts and competition from foreign agricultural products. This reduces the economic capacity of the farming industry which leads to soil erosion and land degradation. On the other hand, the remaining land is being intensively farmed with the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Local government following EU regulations is trying to change this trend by aiming more at promoting a sustainable future for this industry in Malta whilst preserving the natural environments, but still many farmers choose not to …

From Seed To Harvest: A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Of Conventional Vs. Organic Cotton Agriculture, Rebecca Hoehn
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Conventional and organic cotton farming practices both have benefits and detriments to each type. Cotton agriculture is responsible for the use of a third of the agriculture industries’ pesticide use. In order to help alleviate the use of pesticide dependency the following study reviews the use of pesticides as well as other stressors of both systems and hopes to decide how sustainable agriculture in the cotton industry can be attained. Evaluations of both systems have been compared in order to reach the decisions of sustainability.
The Role Of Quality Labels In Farming Diversification And Rural Development, Eman Vella
The Role Of Quality Labels In Farming Diversification And Rural Development, Eman Vella
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
The European Union promotes marketing of quality food products through a quality labelling scheme having three labels known as PDO, PGI and TSG. Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) are two labels that protect products with an association to a particular region. Such products need to have a traditional link with the area as well as unique attributes (known as specifications) that make the product different from the customary. PDO labels designate a product that is linked with an area in every aspect, while PGI labels indicate that the product has a unique geographical link in …

Radiative Forcing Over The Conterminous United States Due To Contemporary Land Cover Use Change And Sensitivity To Snow And Interannual Albedo Variability, Christoper A. Barnes, David P. Roy
GSCE Faculty Publications
Satellite‐derived land cover land use (LCLU), snow and albedo data, and incoming surface solar radiation reanalysis data were used to study the impact of LCLU change from 1973 to 2000 on surface albedo and radiative forcing for 58 ecoregions covering 69% of the conterminous United States. A net positive surface radiative forcing (i.e., warming) of 0.029 Wm−2 due to LCLU albedo change from 1973 to 2000 was estimated. The forcings for individual ecoregions were similar in magnitude to current global forcing estimates, with the most negative forcing (as low as −0.367 Wm−2) due to the transition to forest and the …

Eagle Lager: A Sorghum Success Story On Many Levels, Ian Mackintosh
Eagle Lager: A Sorghum Success Story On Many Levels, Ian Mackintosh
INTSORMIL Presentations
In 1999 in Uganda we were faced with a static but highly competitive market.
Needed to grow our market and to do this we needed to make beer cheaper
It was felt that a suitable local ingredient would reduce the cost of manufacture and stimulate local agriculture and the economy as well as provide opportunities for growth and profit for the company.
An extensive base line study of the Ugandan agricultural sector was undertaken to determine what was “out there.”
It was clear that there was enormous potential but little else.
Sorghum seemed the logical starting point because there was …

Economic Analysis Of Small Scale Sorghum Processing In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Jeremia Makindara, Joseph J. Mpagalile, Wenceslaus Ballegu
INTSORMIL Presentations
Due to small scale food processing initiatives, several entrepreneurs dealing in small scale sorghum processing have emerged in Tanzania and especially in urban centers such as Dar es Salaam. The recent initiative that has contributed to this is the SUA-INTSORMIL Project that started in 2005. However, despite such initiatives being received by many entrepreneurs, very few economic studies have been conducted to assess the benefits obtained by sorghum processing entrepreneurs and the challenges they face are not well explained. This study therefore assessed costs and benefits obtained by small scale sorghum processing entrepreneurs in Dar es Salaam and the challenges …

INTSORMIL Presentations
Sorghum and pearl millet rank second and third, respectively, as important staple cereals after maize.
-There are new market developments in the beer industry requiring farmers to increase productivity and production
-These markets can significantly affect access to improved seed, and thus increase decisions on utilization
-Even though market developments indicate great potential for the two crops, their supply has remained erratic
-There was need therefore to identify the constraining factors to steady supply of sorghum & millet grain through conducting a seed value chain
-Little is known about the existing seed acquisition channels, extent of utilization, how they function …
Methane Digesters, Thomas Van Steyn
Methane Digesters, Thomas Van Steyn
Dairy Science
Anaerobic digestion has many different avenues for opportunity in use on farms. The objective of my senior project is to determine the economic viability of alternative methane digesters on a dairy. Currently the conversion of animal manure to biogas through the process of anaerobic digestion is widely used in Europe. In the U.S. anaerobic digesters have become increasingly in demand by environmental groups and dairymen. Digesters environmental impact involves the benefit by capturing the biogas that comes off animal manure. Methane, a green house gas, is the one with the most concern that is captured by methane digesters. The biogas …

4-H Leaders: Factors That Affect Their Persistence In The 4-H Youth Development Program, Regina Schinker
Dissertations
For over one hundred years, the 4-H youth development program has educated millions of children across the country in a variety of programs; from livestock husbandry to leadership skills. Like all programs that have endured, 4-H has had to adjust its focus as society has changed. One area in the 4-H program that has not changed is the heavy reliance on adult volunteer leaders to deliver the educational programs to 4-H youth. Because of the reliance on volunteer 4-H leaders, 4-H professionals and extension office staff are concerned about issues of retention.
The case study examines two related issues: First, …

Evaluation And Adjustment Of Usda Wasde Cotton Forecasts, David Tysinger
All Theses
The dynamic and volatile nature of agricultural markets causes individuals to rely on forecasts in their decision-making. WASDE cotton forecasts are shown to be especially volatile as cotton is one of the most trade dependent commodities in the world. Therefore, its evaluation requires us to look beyond U.S. WASDE categories and evaluate forecasts for China and the World.
This study will use data from monthly WASDE balance sheets for upland cotton for the U.S, China and World over 1985/1986 through 2008/2009 including unpublished price forecasts. The results of this study will provide information that can be used to improve the …
