Cooling, Storage, And Transporation Of Milk And Cream, P. A. Downs, F. D. Yung Sep 1940

Cooling, Storage, And Transporation Of Milk And Cream, P. A. Downs, F. D. Yung

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The care given milk and milk products should be such that they will be relished by young and old alike. Greater use of milk can be encouraged by serving fresh milk cold. Cooling of milk also insures a fine product several hours after production. This is important not only for milk that is to be used, but for milk or cream that is to be sold.

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Ix. The Nitrogen Of Urea, C. W. Ackerson, W. E. Ham, F. E. Mussehl

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

1. The effect of replacing one-third of the concentrate of a ration for growing chicks with a mixture of starch and urea that contained an amount of nitrogen equal to that contained in the concentrate withdrawn from the ration was studied with two lots of chicks. 2. All chicks of both lots consumed equal amounts of nitrogen during the experiment. 3. Conclusions were based on increases in body weight and content of nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus at slaughter.

Buffalo Grass For Lawns, E. F. Frolik, F. D. Keim May 1940

Buffalo Grass For Lawns, E. F. Frolik, F. D. Keim

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

During the years since 1934 many bluegrass lawns in Nebraska have suffered serious deterioration as a result of drouth and high summer temperature. As a substitute the native buffalo grass has been used increasingly for lawn purposes. Results of experiments and observations indicate definitely that for certain locations buffalo grass has sufficient advantage over bluegrass to recommend it as a permanent lawn grass.

The Influence Of Whole Wheat, Bran And Shorts On Body Weight And Feather Growth In Chicks, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish May 1940

The Influence Of Whole Wheat, Bran And Shorts On Body Weight And Feather Growth In Chicks, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The proteins of the entire wheat kernel and of the bran and shorts are apparently utilized with equal efficiency by growing chicks when used with a base of corn, barley, oats, meat scraps, fish meal, and soybean meal. The relatively higher protein levels of bran and shorts, as compared to ground wheat, should be considered by the poultry producer in deciding which product or products can be used with greatest economy. A good concentration of a feather-growth factor is found in wheat bran. Other common feedstuffs carry the same essential, and the amount of bran which should be used in …

Adjusting Planters And Listers For Sorghums, L. W. Hurlbut May 1940

Adjusting Planters And Listers For Sorghums, L. W. Hurlbut

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

It is the purpose of this circular to present data and suggestions that will aid the farmer in attaining greater success in the planting of sorghum. It has been prepared primarily for the machine operator; and, although it is not a complete discussion of planters and listers, it contains highly practical suggestions regarding the adjustment of the corn planter and lister for sorghum seed.

Relationship Between Size Of Farm Business And Labor Income On Utah Farms, Milton S. Folkman May 1940

Relationship Between Size Of Farm Business And Labor Income On Utah Farms, Milton S. Folkman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the turn of the century there has been a trend within the State of Utah toward more and smaller farms. The original farm units taken up by the early settlers of this state have been divided and subdivided until Utah today has hundreds of uneconomical-sized farms too small to be operated profitably under their present organization.

Inheritance Studies And Possible Linkage Relationships In Barley Involving Five Factor Pairs, Freeman J. Byington May 1940

Inheritance Studies And Possible Linkage Relationships In Barley Involving Five Factor Pairs, Freeman J. Byington

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many studies on inheritance in barley have been made, but very little progress has as yet been obtained. Barley in many ways is an attractive plant with which to make inheritance studies. Unlike common wheat with 21 chromosome pairs and few distinct characters, barley has only 7 chromosome pairs and consequently only 7 possible linkage groups and many distinct characters that may be readily recognized. The chief difficulty is that many of these characters cannot be readily classified because a number of factors may be responsible for their production.

The purpose of this project has been to study in considerable …

Bulk Hybridization Of Smooth Bromegrass (Bromus Inermis), Wayne E. Domingo May 1940

Bulk Hybridization Of Smooth Bromegrass (Bromus Inermis), Wayne E. Domingo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Large populations of controlled hybrids are essential to the most rapid progress in many phases of plant breeding programs. Plant species vary in the ease with which they may be hybridized. Hand hybridization of forage grasses is usually slow and laborious, and the minuteness of the floral parts of most of the species which have perfect flowers renders their hybridization by hand especially difficult and tedious. This difficulty limits the use that forage grass breeders are making of the significant principles of hybridization and thereby retards progress in this phase of plant breeding. Any dependable, rapid technique of hybridization which …

Control Of Stored Grain Pests In Nebraska, M. H. Swenk, D. B. Whelan Apr 1940

Control Of Stored Grain Pests In Nebraska, M. H. Swenk, D. B. Whelan

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

At the close of 1939 about twice the amount of wheat was in storage in Nebraska as compared to the close of 1938. Frequently a new crop of grain goes into storage before the preceding older grain leaves the farm, and, due to inadequate storage space, the crops are not kept separated, thus promoting an early infestation of the new grain from the older grain that has become infested. Under such conditions the damage by stored grain pests becomes a matter of unusual importance.

An Inquiry Into The Influence Of Environment On The Incidence Of Poultry Diseases, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The principal purpose of the investigation reported here was to evaluate, if possible, hygienic measures, and in addition to gather whatever information might become available pertaining to the relation of certain disorders to a given poultry population after its exposure to their specific etiologic factors. The experiments were conducted on a piece of ground upon which poultry had not been maintained for many years, if ever.

Vegetative Composition And Grazing Capacity Of A Typical Area Of Nebraska Sandhill Range Land, A. L. Frolik, W. O. Shepherd Mar 1940

Vegetative Composition And Grazing Capacity Of A Typical Area Of Nebraska Sandhill Range Land, A. L. Frolik, W. O. Shepherd

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The sandhill area of Nebraska occupies approximately 20,000 square miles of the central portion of the state. Being unadapted to cultivation, the land is for the most part still covered with native vegetation. It is utilized primarily for the production of livestock, chiefly cattle. During the period 1931 to 1938 the sandhills carried annually an average of 1,041,000 cattle, which amounted to 31 per cent of the total number in the state. The management practices used in the Nebraska sandhills have gained national recognition as a good example of range conservation in the United States. The purpose of this study …

Spraying Tree Fruits, C. C. Wiggans, E. H. Hoppert Mar 1940

Spraying Tree Fruits, C. C. Wiggans, E. H. Hoppert

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The production of sound, clean fruit is unquestionably one of the major problems facing the modern fruit grower. Culture may be neglected and pruning delayed for a time but the omission of sprays for even a single season demonstrates their absolute necessity. This applies equally to the commercial grower and to the farmer or gardener who has only a few trees.

A Comparative Study Of Textbooks In General Agriculture Used In Senior High Schools, Lowell O. Yasmer

Master's Theses

The specific problem of the thesis is, "A Comparative Study of Certain Textbooks in General Agriculture Used in Senior High Schools.” It is limited in that it doe s not cover all textbooks in the field of general agriculture , but only those which made a certain score or rating through the use of a device formulated for this purpose, nor was it the problem to discover which is the best textbook in agriculture but rather to make a comparative analysis of the textbooks selected. The books selected were compare d critically with each other in an effort to determine …
