Effect Of Supplementation Prior To Artificial Insemination And During Gestation In Beef Females, Landon Tadich
Effect Of Supplementation Prior To Artificial Insemination And During Gestation In Beef Females, Landon Tadich
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Objectives of Experiment 1 was to evaluate the impact of increased energy prior to AI on BW, ADG, and reproductive efficiency in heifers developed on range or in a dry lot. During the winter development period (131 ± 3.5 d/yr) heifers (n= 100/yr) were assigned to either upland range (RANGE) or fed a dry lot diet in two pens that either remained constant (DLLO) or increased in energy prior to AI (DLHI). Heifers developed on RANGE grazed upland winter range until 38 d prior to AI where they then received the DLLO diet. Pre-breeding BW was greater (P £ …
Changes In Whole Blood Parameters In Beef Heifers May Contribute To Delayed Pubertal Attainment, Jessica A. Keane
Changes In Whole Blood Parameters In Beef Heifers May Contribute To Delayed Pubertal Attainment, Jessica A. Keane
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Pubertal development in beef heifers is a transient period that has many contributing factors. Previously in our lab, progesterone (P4) concentrations collected from heifers at weaning (Oct) to breeding (May) were used to identify four distinct pubertal groups: Typical, Early, Start-Stop, and Non-Cycling. There is limited research on heifers and the impacts of whole blood cell populations, particularly WBCs, during pubertal development; however, girls with differing puberty onset displayed altered concentrations of hematocrit, white blood cells (WBC), and hemoglobin concentrations. Thus, our hypothesis was that heifer pubertal groups with delayed or precocious puberty may have increased white blood cells or …

Developmental And Reproductive Characteristics Of Beef Heifers Classified By Number Of Estrous Cycles Experienced By Start Of First Breeding, Andy Roberts, Jaclyn N. Ketchum, Richard N. Funston
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
A retrospective analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of number of estrous cycles exhibited before breeding on growth and reproductive performance of replacement beef heifers fed ad-libitum or restricted by 20% less than ad-libitum during postweaning development over a 9-yr period. Progesterone concentration in blood samples collected at 9- to 11-d intervals were used to assign heifers into groups by number of estrous cycles exhibited before the start of breeding: 0 (nonpubertal; n = 395), 1 (n = 205), 2 (n = 211), 3 (n = 116), or >3 (n = 249). Heifers (P …

Comparison Of Boer, Kiko, And Spanish Meat Goat Does For Stayability And Cumulative Reproductive Output In The Humid Subtropical Southeastern United States, Ashley N. Pellerin, Richard Browning Jr.
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Background: Longevity is the amount of time breeding females stay active in a herd by avoiding death or culling because of illness or reproductive failure. This is a trait of economic relevance in commercial small ruminant breeding herds as it affects lifetime reproductive output. The purpose of this study was to determine if breed of meat goat influences breeding doe survival rates and cumulative reproductive performance under semi-intensive management. Results: Boer (n = 132), Kiko (n = 92) and Spanish (n = 79) does were evaluated for longevity trends and cumulative kid production. The herd was managed on humid subtropical …
Heifer Development Systems: Dry-Lot Feeding Compared With Grazing Dormant Winter Forage, Richard N. Funston, D. M. Larson
Heifer Development Systems: Dry-Lot Feeding Compared With Grazing Dormant Winter Forage, Richard N. Funston, D. M. Larson
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
Two hundred ninety-nine Angusbased, nulliparous heifers (253 ± 2 kg initial BW) from 3 production years were utilized to compare traditional postweaning dry lot (DL) development with a more extensive winter grazing system utilizing a combination of corn residue and winter range (EXT). Heifers developed in the DL were offered a common diet after the weaning period for 208 d in yr 1, 194 d in yr 2, and 150 d in yr 3 until breeding. Heifers developed in EXT grazed corn residue for 135 d in yr 1, 106 d in yr 2, and 91 d in yr 3, …

The Effects Of Corn Coproduct Supplementation On Primiparous Cow Reproduction And Calf Performance, D. M. Larson, R. N. Funston
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
An experiment was replicated over 2 yr to determine the effect of additional RUP and dietary fat from dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS; n = 2) or wet corn gluten feed (WCGF; n = 2) before breeding on primiparous cow reproduction and calf production. Over 2 yr, 134 postpartum, primiparous cows (429 ± 5 kg initial BW) were fed 1 of 2 isocaloric, approximately isonitrogenous diets in 1 pen/yr (n = 4) providing varying levels of RUP and dietary fat. Treatments were initiated 21 (yr 1) and 60 d (yr 2) postpartum and continued for 56 (yr 1) or …

Extending Interval From Seventeen To Nineteen Days In The Melengestrol Acetate - Prostaglandin Estrous Synchronization Program For Heifers, G. H. Deutscher
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
Two experiments were conducted to determine whether extending the interval between removal of melengestrol acetate (MGA) from feed and injection of prostaglandin F2α (PGF) from 17 to 19 d would affect synchronization of estrus, conception, and pregnancy rates of beef heifers. In both experiments, heifers were fed MGA for 14 d, and PGF was given at either 17 or 19 d after cessation of MGA feeding. Heifers were observed for estrus and artificially inseminated for 5 d after PGF injection.
In Exp. 1, 240 yearling heifers were randomly assigned to either a 17- or a 19-d …

Ec00-280 Hiring Dairy Personnel: Making The Process Easier, Jeffrey F. Keown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Position descriptions are essential. A detailed position, or job, description can help you as an employer identify and eliminate applicants who will not perform well on the job and gives you justifiable grounds for terminating an employee who does not perform the job satisfactorily.
On most dairy farms, employees can be grouped into three categories: herd managers, feeders or outdoor workers, and milkers. This extension circular discusses the description for each category, how to start the hiring process, and questions that may be asked during interviewing and after hiring for a position on the dairy farm.

Ec97-274 Management Of Replacement Gilts For Efficient Reproduction, Donald G. Levis
Ec97-274 Management Of Replacement Gilts For Efficient Reproduction, Donald G. Levis
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Successfully introducing replacement gilts into the breeding herd is an important aspect of breeding herd efficiency. To attain herd efficiency, females must ovulate adequate numbers of viable ova, express estrus, show willingness to mate and conceive in a regular manner. If these qualities are properly developed, pregnancy rate and litter size will be maximized. A gilt development and management program needs to be designed for gilts from birth to farrowing their first litter.
