Energy Management Study Of Irrigation Pumping Plants For The Utah Power And Light Company, Jeffrey C. White
Energy Management Study Of Irrigation Pumping Plants For The Utah Power And Light Company, Jeffrey C. White
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
All electric power utility companies are faced with yearly peak demands. They must supply sufficient generating capacity along with transmission and distribution facilities to carry these loads. In the past, peaking requirements of many utilities have been met by the use of gas turbines, which are not as efficient as base load plants, but require substantially lower capital investments. However, the fuel supplies used for gas turbines are becoming extremely difficult and expensive to procure and as a result, other means for meeting peak demands are being examined.
Energy management attempts to modify the power systems' load requirements to fit …

Tolerance to high moisture conditions in the soil was compared for eighteen crop species, and factors causing differences among species were studied: 1) When the moisture content of a soil was kept high, the soil air contained 10.5 - 17.5% of O2 and 5.0 - 9.8% of CO2, and the soil solution was not very high in Fe, Mn or NO2-N. 2) Cruciferae, Solanaceae, sugar beet, field bean, pea, cucumber and Chrysanthemum coronarium were very susceptible to this condition, but maize, soybean, and onion were tolerant. Rice grew better under this condition than under ordinary upland conditions. 3) Tolerance to …

Fire-Decay: Interactive Roles Regulating Wood Accumulation And Soil Development In The Northern Rocky Mountains, A. E. Harvey, M. J. Larsen, M. F. Jurgensen
Aspen Bibliography
Decay and fire play interactive roles in recycling wood and other organic materials in forest ecosystems, and contribute to the development of high quality soils in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Decayed wood, charcoal, and other decomposed organic matter are the principal media for ectomycorrhizal and nonsymbiotic nitrogen fixing microbes. The activities of these microbes are critical to the growth of forest trees. The balance between decay and fire, as it affects the amount, distribution, and type of organic matter, controls the ability of forest soils to support the growth of trees.
