Profitability Of Developing Beef Heifers On Stockpiled Winter Forages, Zachary David Mcfarlane, Chris Boyer, J. Travis Mulliniks
Profitability Of Developing Beef Heifers On Stockpiled Winter Forages, Zachary David Mcfarlane, Chris Boyer, J. Travis Mulliniks
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
We estimate the profitability of developing heifers on one stockpiled cool-season grass and two stockpiled warm-season grasses during the winter months by comparing distributions of net present value (NPV) over an 11-year useful life. Furthermore, distributions of payback period and the break-even price for each calf over the heifer’s production life were generated for each forage species. These results are compared across forages as well as to a simulated drylot system for heifer development. Data comes from a grazing experiment in Tennessee, where heifers grazed big bluestem and Indian grass combination (BBIG), switchgrass (SW), or endophyte-infected tall fescue (TF) pastures. …

Tomato Cultivar Evaluation In High Tunnels, Northern Indiana, 2017, Elizabeth Maynard, Erin A. Bluhm
Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
Tomatoes are a common crop grown in unheated greenhouses, commonly called high tunnels. Production in these structures has increased in recent years. This trial was conducted to evaluate varieties for their performance as a summer-harvested crop in soil-based high tunnel production systems. Five hybrid determinate varieties or line, one hybrid indeterminate, and one open-pollinated indeterminate variety were compared for yield, earliness, fruit size, and quality.

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports
This is a compilation of 18 research trial reports from four land-grant universities in the Midwestern United States. Crops include cantaloupe, pickling cucumber, pepper, potato, pumpkin, summer squash and zucchini, sweet corn, tomato, and watermelon. Somecrops were evaluated in high tunnels or hoophouses. Most trials evaluated different cultivars or varieties. One report addressed plant spacing for sweet corn and one addressed soil block for production of tomato seedlings. A list of vegetable seed sources and a list of other online sources of vegetable trial reports are also included.

Pumpkin Variety Performance With And Without Treatment For Powdery Mildew In Northern Indiana, 2017, Elizabeth Maynard, Erin A. Bluhm
Purdue Fruit and Vegetable Research Reports
Pumpkins are grown on 5,000 acres in Indiana with an average yield of 6.75 tons per acre. Successful pumpkin production requires the use of varieties that yield well and produce pumpkins of the size, shape, color, and quality demanded by the market. Genetic resistance to the fungal disease powdery mildew is present in some varieties. This trial was designed to evaluate performance of pumpkin varieties in northern Indiana with and without treatment for powdery mildew. The trial included fourteen orange jack-o-lantern size pumpkins, one small or 'pie' pumpkin and one specialty yellow pumpkin.
