Small Claims Courts: An Overview And Recommendation, Alexander Domanskis

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Small claims courts have been in operation in the United States for over sixty years. They were established to function as inexpensive, efficient, and convenient forums for resolving claims which could not be brought economically in ordinary civil courts because of the costs and delays accompanying ordinary civil court proceedings. Small claims courts also reduce administrative delays by resolving a large volume of claims. For example, the District of Columbia small claims court processed 30,000 claims in 1973. In the recent past, the main activity of the International Monetary Fund in connection with the development of international law has been the negotiation and drafting of an amendment of the Fund's Articles of Agreement. The present report deals primarily with that activity, but also comments on the sixth general review of the quotas of member states in the Fund.

Government Information And The Rights Of Citizens, Michigan Law Review

Michigan Law Review

This Project delineates the federal and state responses to these two fundamental societal concerns. The course of the discussion suggests the vitality of these concerns, and the flexibility and continuing development of the governmental responses. Clearly, the interests in maximizing disclosure of government-held information and minimizing the handling and dissemination of unnecessary or inaccurate personal information can conflict. The contours of this conflict, only intimated herein, will doubtless become more bold with the maturation of the opposing statutory schemes.

Fighting Conflicts Of Interest In Officialdom: Constitutional And Practical Guidelines For State Financial Disclosure Laws, Michigan Law Review

Michigan Law Review

This note will examine the individual interests in running for office and in personal financial privacy in order to determine what level of scrutiny should be applied to disclosure statutes. After concluding that only minimal scrutiny should apply--a standard certainly met by the state's strong interests--it will be argued that nonconstitutional considerations bearing on the practicality of disclosure statutes nevertheless require a careful balancing of the state interest in disclosure against the individual interests of each class of persons affected by the statutes. Deterring Misuse Of Confidential Government Information: A Proposed Citizens' Action, Joseph J. Kalo

Michigan Law Review

Part I of this article offers two examples-predicated on historical fact-that illustrate the possible adverse consequences of disclosure of confidential government information. Part I also examines present statutory and regulatory safeguards against such disclosure and analyzes their effect. Part II sets forth a proposal for reducing the possibility that confidential government information will be improperly used and for recouping government losses by means of a citizens' action. when it is so used.
