You Get What You Pay For: An Empirical Examination Of The Use Of Mturk In Legal Scholarship, Adriana Z. Robertson, Albert H. Yoon
You Get What You Pay For: An Empirical Examination Of The Use Of Mturk In Legal Scholarship, Adriana Z. Robertson, Albert H. Yoon
Vanderbilt Law Review
In recent years, legal scholars have come to rely on Amazon's Mechanical Turk ("MTurk') platform to recruit participants for surveys and experiments. Despite MTurk's popularity, there is no generally accepted methodology for its use in legal scholarship, and many questions remain about the validity of data gathered from this source. In particular, little is known about how the compensation structure affects the performance of respondents recruited using MTurk.
This Essay fills both of these gaps. We develop an experiment and test the effect of various compensation structures on performance along two dimensions: effort and attention. We find that both the …

St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Part I of this Article explores the United States justice system’s failure to adequately serve all people irrespective of wealth and position. Next, Part II discusses the ABA’s call to leverage technology to increase access to justice. Part III explores ABA Free Legal Answers Online, the program that the ABA pioneered to help confront the justice gap in the United States. Subsequently, Part IV illustrates how law schools can leverage technology to increase access to justice for low-income communities while providing pro bono opportunities for attorneys and students in their state. This Part highlights Massachusetts as an example of …

Gender Disparity In Law Review Citation Rates, Christopher A. Cotropia, Lee Petherbridge
Gender Disparity In Law Review Citation Rates, Christopher A. Cotropia, Lee Petherbridge
William & Mary Law Review
Gender disparity in scholarly influence—measured in terms of differential citation to academic work—has been widely documented. The weight of the evidence is that, in many fields of academic inquiry, papers authored by women receive fewer citations than papers authored by men. To investigate whether a similar gender disparity in scholarly influence exists in legal studies, we analyze the impact of gender on citation to articles published in top 100 law reviews between 1990 and 2010. We find evidence of gender disparity in citation rates, but in surprising contrast to observations made in other disciplines, we observe that articles authored by …

Access To Justice Starts In The Library: The Importance Of Competent Research Skills And Free/Low-Cost Research Resources, Deborah K. Hackerson
Access To Justice Starts In The Library: The Importance Of Competent Research Skills And Free/Low-Cost Research Resources, Deborah K. Hackerson
Maine Law Review
Access to justice is an important aspirational goal for everyone in the legal profession. Lawyers, however, cannot provide access to justice without adequate practical skills and the tools necessary to complete their work. Lawyers and law students provide many hours of public and pro bono service every year. With the current state of the economy and the record jobless rate, it is likely that the need for low cost and free legal services will continue to grow. In order to carry out the mission of continuing to provide services to those in need, law students must prepare learn the practical …

Collaborative Relationships Between Law Librarians And Legal Writing Faculty, Susan Azyndar, Ingrid Mattson
Collaborative Relationships Between Law Librarians And Legal Writing Faculty, Susan Azyndar, Ingrid Mattson
Journal Articles
From the Introduction
How would you characterize the professional relationship between law librarians and legal writing faculty in your law school? Satisfying? Productive? Fraught? Nonexistent? Given law schools’ great demands on these groups’ time and talents and the ABA’s increased emphasis on experiential skills, law librarians and legal writing faculty should strive to develop a meaningful dialog. In this way, each group will better understand what the other can provide in terms of expertise, and the two groups can develop a mutually beneficial work dynamic.

A Survey Of Legal Issues Arising From The Deployment Of Autonomous And Connected Vehicles, Daniel A. Crane, Kyle D. Logue, Bryce C. Pilz
Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review
With concerns rising over the number and variety of state regulations, companies are increasingly looking to the federal government for guidance. Representatives from Google, GM, Lyft, and Delphi testified before Congress on March 15, urging Congress to pass a federal law concerning autonomous vehicles. While the passage of any federal legislation is unclear at this time, other parts of the federal government have been extremely active in recent months. In January 2016, the Obama administration proposed a 10-year, $4 billion investment in autonomous vehicle technology. In that same announcement, the Department of Transportation (“DOT”) committed to developing model state policy …

The Uneasy Case For The Retirement Of Douglas Kahn, Jeffrey H. Kahn
The Uneasy Case For The Retirement Of Douglas Kahn, Jeffrey H. Kahn
Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review
In the fall semester of 1964, a young Douglas Kahn joined the faculty of the University of Michigan Law School. During the spring semester of 2016, he will teach his final course as a full-time faculty member. For the interim fifty two years, he has been a fixture of the Michigan law school community. As a tax professor, former student, and his son, I am pleased and honored to write this introduction for an edition of the Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review honoring Professor Kahn’s tenure at the University of Michigan.
