A Critical View Of The Uniform Crime Reports, Sophia M. Robison
A Critical View Of The Uniform Crime Reports, Sophia M. Robison
Michigan Law Review
No one would deny that the FBI performs a vital function in investigating, identifying, and tracking down suspects who may endanger the life, liberty, and property of Americans. However, this writer feels that the Uniform Crime Reports published by the FBI should be subjected to a very critical analysis. Of primary concern are the indiscriminate acceptance of the official data by legislators and social science investigators and the doubtful inferences which a frightened public draws from news releases proclaiming that "the U.S. is sitting on a seething volcano of crime."
Uniform Crime Reports, Peter P. Lejins
Uniform Crime Reports, Peter P. Lejins
Michigan Law Review
The Uniform Crime Reports are-both nationally and internationally- an extremely important statistical series, and an invitation by the Michigan Law Review to comment on this annual compilation is very much appreciated: This writer has felt for some time that the recent frequent statements on the Uniform Crime Reports in the daily press and some professional journals have created a considerable amount of unnecessary confusion. This opportunity to analyze the issues involved is therefore most gratifying.

Logic-Language-Law, Layman E. Allen
Logic-Language-Law, Layman E. Allen

One legal tool which is not machine operated but is helpful in the study of computer technology and its applications to law is symbolic logic. But this tool is also helpful to the attorney who is not at all interested in computers; it will help improve his understanding of the profession's basic tool: the English language.
When examined as a tool useful for lawyers, symbolic logic is perhaps best viewed as a language. It can be regarded as a carefully and precisely constructed language that has been expressly designed for explicit purposes, rather than one that has evolved haphazardly through …
The Problem Of Communications In Meeting The Information Requirements Of The Courts, Layman Allen
The Problem Of Communications In Meeting The Information Requirements Of The Courts, Layman Allen
Book Chapters
My remarks are addressed to one aspect of the general problem of communication involved in meeting the information requirements of the courts. It transcends merely the court; however, it is a problem throughout the legal decision-making system. The efficiency of t:ourts in processing information is just one part of a larger picture of effective communication within the legal system. Phrased broadly, the question involves discerning the optimum man-machine mix in the processing of information. Nobody can reasonably quarrel with the goal of taking the fullest possible advantage of the benefits of emerging technology, as long as objectives of greater importance …

Predicting Court Cases Quantitatively, Stuart Nagel
Predicting Court Cases Quantitatively, Stuart Nagel
Michigan Law Review
This article illustrates and systematically compares three methods for quantitatively predicting case outcomes. The three methods are correlation, regression, and discriminant analysis, all of which involve standard social science research techniques. Two prior articles have generated requests for a study dealing with the problems involved in handling a larger number of cases and predictive variables. The present article is also designed to provide such a study. It does not presuppose that the reader has read the earlier articles, although such a reading might help to clarify further some of the points made here. The cases used to illustrate the methods …
