Intoxication And Aggression, Jeffrey Fagan Jan 1990

Intoxication And Aggression, Jeffrey Fagan

Faculty Scholarship

Evidence of an association between use of illicit substances and aggressive behavior is pervasive. But the precise causal mechanisms by which aggression is influenced by intoxicants are still not well understood. Research on intoxication and aggression often has overlooked the nonviolent behavior of most substance users, controlled use of substances, and the evidence from other cultures of a weak or nonexistent relation between substance use and aggression. There is only limited evidence that ingestion of substances is a direct, pharmacological cause of aggression. The temporal order of substance use and aggression does not indicate a causal role for intoxicants. Research …

Section 12 Of The Canada Evidence Act And The Deliberations Of Simulated Juries, Valerie P. Hans, Anthony N. Doob

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In the past, there have been three major approaches to the experimental investigation of the jury. First, juror selection research involves the study of the relation between verdicts or leniency toward certain classes of defendants and the characteristics of potential jurors. The second class of research is group study, in which the amount and style of individual participation is observed within the context of simulated jury deliberations (e.g., Strodtbeck, James and Hawkins, 1957). Finally, experimental psychology has made another contribution to the study of the jury; numerous researchers have conducted experimental studies employing legal stimulus materials. Typically, in such a …

A Critical View Of The Uniform Crime Reports, Sophia M. Robison Apr 1966

A Critical View Of The Uniform Crime Reports, Sophia M. Robison

Michigan Law Review

No one would deny that the FBI performs a vital function in investigating, identifying, and tracking down suspects who may endanger the life, liberty, and property of Americans. However, this writer feels that the Uniform Crime Reports published by the FBI should be subjected to a very critical analysis. Of primary concern are the indiscriminate acceptance of the official data by legislators and social science investigators and the doubtful inferences which a frightened public draws from news releases proclaiming that "the U.S. is sitting on a seething volcano of crime."

Uniform Crime Reports, Peter P. Lejins Apr 1966

Uniform Crime Reports, Peter P. Lejins

Michigan Law Review

The Uniform Crime Reports are-both nationally and internationally- an extremely important statistical series, and an invitation by the Michigan Law Review to comment on this annual compilation is very much appreciated: This writer has felt for some time that the recent frequent statements on the Uniform Crime Reports in the daily press and some professional journals have created a considerable amount of unnecessary confusion. This opportunity to analyze the issues involved is therefore most gratifying.

Trial Of Legal Issues In Injunction Against Tort, Edgar N. Durfee Feb 1959

Trial Of Legal Issues In Injunction Against Tort, Edgar N. Durfee

Michigan Law Review

This essay appeared in a casebook on Equitable Remedies that was used for years in mimeographed form at the University of Michigan Law School. It was never prepared for final publication by Professor Durfee himself, but the numerous changes made in his own personal copy indicate that he had given much thought to the subject. Professor John P. Dawson who had collaborated with Professor Durfee has incorporated these changes in the present text. More changes might have been made by Professor Durfee if he had planned to publish it. The editors believe that as it stands it deserves a wider …

Coyle V. The Commonwealth, Henry W. Rogers

Articles

"Homicidal mania must be proved, not assumed, nor confounded with reckless frenzy; To instruct, however, that it must be proved by 'clearly preponderating evidence' is error. All the authorities require is that the evidence proving it should 'fairly' preponderate.

"An attempt at suicide is not of itself evidence of insanity, and raises no legal presumption thereof....

"It was clearly proved that Coyle killed Emily Myers. That fact is admitted. The only defence set up is that he was insane at the time."
