What is the appropriate set for the mind when it mulls the report of the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice? Should it be fine grind, as is the professor's when he asks a student in his first class in law school to state the case of Regina v. Dudley & Stephens? Or should the running wheel be raised from the bedstone, as is so often the case when the professor turns to review the work of a colleague? While the latter may have the appeal of habit, there are, I think, three important reasons …

The Adversary Proceeding In The Year 2000, Maurice Rosenberg
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The object of this series is to explore the sciences that relate to law for the light that they may shed on the judicial function in time to come. To assess the impact of science and technology on law is at least a full day's work. It requires us to ask in what ways the power and knowledge of science threaten or challenge society now and in years ahead. It also requires us to ask how we can harness scientific knowledge and power for the law's needs today, and for needs as yet unknown.

Constitutional Law--Freedom Of Speech--Desecration Of National Symbols As Protected Political Expression, Michigan Law Review
Michigan Law Review
Protest groups have long recognized the publicity value of engaging in dramatic kinds of symbolic behavior to express their disapproval of government policy, and recently they have resorted to the desecration of traditionally "sacred" symbols to achieve this end. Recourse to conduct offensive to the patriotic and religious sensibilities of large segments of the population seems to have paralleled the advent of widespread civil disobedience as an instrument of political persuasion. Specifically, dissent over the Vietnam war has produced a number of incidents involving public disrespect for the American flag. Thus, a need has arisen to analyze the extent to …

Most low income families rent their living accommodations; for them the lease arrangement is a precarious one at best. It is generally a periodic tenancy from week to week or month to month with the agreement rarely reduced to writing. If the allocation of rights and duties between the parties is spelled out by them at all, it is quite one-sided and normally delineates only what the tenant may and may not do. When there is no written agreement or when the writing is silent as to the obligations of the parties, the common law of landlord and tenant controls, …

Ann Arbor And Legal Aid, James J. White
Articles
Since the leasing of its office in August 1965, the Washtenaw County Legal Aid Society has been open nearly 50 hours per week and has been staffed exclusively by second and third-year law students from the University of Michigan Law School. The bulk of the practice has been in family law--divorce, support, custody--but there have been a substantial number of creditor-debtor cases, a handful of misdemeanor defense cases, and a large batch of miscellaneous cases.

Science And The Law Symposium: Introduction, David F. Cavers
Michigan Law Review
This symposium reflects a growing concern that, in a period when our society is being rapidly transformed by science and technology, increasing attention be directed to the bearing of this development on law as our society's primary control system. Moreover, since law can exert some influence on the rate and direction of scientific and technological change, the examination must extend as well to the bearing of law on the processes of that change.

Legislation Requiring Child To Support Mother In State Asylum Is A Denial Of Equal Protection-Department Of Mental Hygiene V. Kirchner, Michigan Law Review
Legislation Requiring Child To Support Mother In State Asylum Is A Denial Of Equal Protection-Department Of Mental Hygiene V. Kirchner, Michigan Law Review
Michigan Law Review
The California Department of Mental Hygiene brought suit under section 6650 of the state's Welfare and Institutions Code, a provision commonly known as a relative support statute, against the administratrix to recover 7,500 dollars from the intestate's estate. This amount represented the cost of food, housing, and treatment received by intestate's mother in a state mental hospital during the four years she had been confined there following a civil sanity hearing. Plaintiff was granted judgment on the pleadings. On appeal to the California Supreme Court, held, reversed. Since mental hospitals serve a proper public function, it is a denial …

Legal, Medical And Psychiatric Considerations In The Control Of Prostitution, B. J. George Jr.
Michigan Law Review
In common with other nations of the world the United States today as in the past is faced with the problem of controlling prostitution, particularly in urban areas. At one time or another states and cities in the United States have experimented with the classic methods of controlling prostitution: reglementation, segregation and repression. Reglementation of individual houses or prostitutes has never been carried out on a statewide basis in any state in the United States, though one can find instances in certain large cities in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in which city ordinances or de facto police regulations …
